Gramsci's works, in particular his 'Prison Notebooks', are a real 'workshop' of activity. Even though these texts were the product of a great mind and an organic conception of the world, the particular context in which they are written poses challenges for their interpreters. This philological 'excavation' of the pathways of Gramsci's thinking brings us closer to an author who is more 'widely-known' than he is understood. The first part of the volume deals with central themes of Gramsci's worldview such as the concepts of the state, civil society, ideology, common sense, morality and conformism. The second part deals with Gramsci's relations with thinkers as diverse as Marx, Engels, Togliatti and Labriola, whereas the third part offers some reflections on the metaphors used by Gramsci as well as contemporary views of the Sardinian Communist. 0First published in Italian by Carocci as 'Sentieri gramsciani', 2006.

This volume is the first of the OECD Development Pathways, a new series that looks at multiple development objectives beyond an exclusive focus on growth. The series starts with Myanmar, a country to be covered for the first time by the OECD. This initial assessment shows that Myanmar's success in achieving stable and sustainable growth will depend vitally on its ability to develop the institutional and social capital necessary to maintain macroeconomic and financial stability, to ensure the rule of law, to achieve environmentally sustainable development and to create an enabling environment f

Purpose– The purpose of this special issue is first to highlight the need for wider understanding of the "civilisational challenge" facing humanity, as it encounters and then exceeds significant limits to growth. The second is to present material that provides grounds for developing effective responses.Design/methodology/approach– The issue draws on evidence from previous research, economic modelling and a range of other sources to investigate the hypothesis that humanity is heading towards an "overshoot and collapse" future. It further suggests that a useful way of responding is to explore the possibility that the prospect of collapse can be moderated or avoided through a process of "conscious descent."Findings– The main findings are that a very wide spectrum of policies, actions, strategies and options is available that can and should be used to help us avoid the most disastrous manifestations of "overshoot and collapse." Yet there are also many barriers and impediments that continue to inhibit effective responses. This means that the process of coming to grips with the "civilisational challenge" will take longer and become increasingly costly. Denialism and short term thinking remain embedded in dominant institutions and mainstream practice. Currently, vastly more is miss-spent on various perverse incentives (e.g. advertising, the funding of denial, fossil fuel subsidies) than on securing the future of civilisation. This can be seen as a consequence of outdated values and inadequate worldviews.Research limitations/implications– The contributions here represent a sample from within a rapidly expanding field of enquiry and action. They should therefore be seen as indicating the need for further high quality investigation, work and action. The main implication is that this process needs to be taken seriously, properly resourced and eventually transformed into a mainstream social project.Originality/value– The papers are contributions to an in-depth understanding of a complex and evolving situation. Their value lies in the fact that greater understanding and a commitment to early action are among the most productive investments available to societies vulnerable to the systemic threats outlined here. As such, the special issue evokes a fundamental tenet of foresight work in general. Or to put this in the words of Bertrand de Jouvenel, "the proof of improvidence lies in falling under the empire of necessity."
Pathways across Cultures: Intercultural Communication in South Africa is a uniquely South African communication textbook. Local examples of communication methods from a wide range of cultural groups are used to explain theories of communication and complex intercultural concepts. It covers some of the rich cultural histories of the rainbow nation, such as Khoisan cave drawings, highlighting the intercultural communication styles of the early peoples who lived in South Africa. The book also includes critical commentary on western theories and approaches to studying intercultural communication.

THE PREMISE OF THIS ARTICLE IS THAT ADULT PARTICIPATION IN POLITICS IS AFFECTED BY STRONG PREADULT FORCES IN ADDITION TO THE CONTEMPORANEOUS FACTORS EMPHASIZED BY RECENT STUDIES. TO TEST THIS PREMISE, DATA ARE DRAWN FROM THE 1965-1973 NATIONAL SOCIALIZATION PANEL STUDY OF YOUNG AMERICANS AND THEIR PARENTS. FOUR CAUSAL MODELS DEPICTING PATHWAYS TO PARTICIPATION AMONG YOUNG ADULTS ARE EVALUATED; EACH INCLUDES CIVIC ORIENTATIONS AS INTERVENING VARIABLES. THREE OF THE MODELS ASSESS THE DIRECT AND INDIRECT EFFECTS OF PARENTAL CHARACTERISTICS-SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS, POLITICAL ACTIVITY, AND CIVIC ORIENTATIONS. THE FOURTH MODEL ASSESSES THE IMPACT OF ADOLESCENT INVOLVEMENT IN HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES. TAKEN INDIVIDUALLY, EACH PATHWAY IS SHOWN TO HAVE AN EFFECT ON ADULT PARTICIPATION, WITH PARENT SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS AND HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVISM HAVING THE MOST IMPACT. WHEN THE FOUR PATHWAYS ARE COMBINED IN A SINGLE MODEL TO REFLECT THE CONNECTIONS AMONG THEM, ALL REMAIN IMPORTANT. THE COMBINED MODEL ILLUSTRATES THE IMPORTANCE OF A VARIETY OF METHODS OF POLITICAL LEARNING. THE COMBINED MODEL ALSO DEMONSTRATES THE CRUCIAL ROLE OF CIVIC ORIENTATIONS IN CONVERTING PREADULT EXPERIENCES INTO LATER PARTICIPATION. CIVIC ORIENTATIONS ARE THE PRIMARY CARRIERS OF PREADULT POLITICAL LEARNING. OVERALL, THE RESULTS REBUT THE CRITICS OF SOCIALIZATION RESEARCH WHO HAVE QUESTIONED THE EXISTENCE OF A LINKAGE BETWEEN EARLY LEARNING AND ADULT POLITICAL BEHAVIOR.
This book considers the development of prevention policies and approaches that involve intervention 'early' in the lives of children, young people and their families. It addresses a number of key challenges, arguing that by broadening the research questions and exploring contributions from a wider range of disciplines our understanding of both the pathways into and out of crime and the type of interventions that might work will be greatly enhanced

The premise of this article is that adult participation in politics is affected by strong preadult forces in addition to the contemporaneous factors emphasized by recent studies. To test this premise, data are drawn from the 1965–1973 national socialization panel study of young Americans and their parents. Four causal models depicting pathways to participation among young adults are evaluated; each includes civic orientations as intervening variables. Three of the models assess the direct and indirect effects of parental characteristics—socioeconomic status, political activity, and civic orientations.
