The chapel of St. James in the Santo, Padua is still commonly described as that of Bonifacio Lupi, a condottiere who participated in all the major political and military adventures of north and central Italy during the second half of the fourteenth century. As is often the case, however, the initial foundation was a more complex affair, which owed much to the relationship between the Lupi and their relations on Bonifacio's mother's side, the Rossi family. The chapel's refurbishment and fresco decoration serves as an excellent example of collaboration between a number of parties, including Caterina di Staggia, wife of Bonifacio. This essay spans thirty years and focuses on Caterina's artistic patronage, first as the spouse of Bonifacio and later as his widow, until her own death in Venice in 1405. A detailed analysis of her gifts in life as in death suggests that despite her self-imposed exile to Venice, Caterina remained true to her adopted city of Padua. Moreover, even after Bonifacio's death, Caterina commissioned furnishings on his behalf. This exemplifies a traditional wish to honour her deceased spouse's memory and provide for his soul, and yet reiterates her independence as a self-standing patron.
An important factor in the Catholic reconquest of Silesia in the seventeenth century was the cultivation of music modelled on the Italian style, which was promoted by circles connected with the Society of Jesus and financed by the new political elites of this region, ones predominantly linked to the House of Habsburg. ; Eden od pomembnih dejavnikov v rekatolizaciji Šlezije v 17. stoletju je bila glasbena umetnost po vzorih sodobnega italijanskega sloga, ki so jo širili predvsem krogi, povezani z jezuiti. The paper aims to outline some of the strategies of aristocratic patronage in sacred spaces in the Italian peninsula. The commissioning of elaborate marble funerary monuments, the choice of location for chaplaincies or entire churches, convents and monasteries, and the choice of the religious order to which to entrust them are indicated here as keys to understanding the internal distinctions within the Italian aristocracies. In particular, a new examination of aristocratic patronage between the 14th and 16th centuries is considered a means to address a general revision of the Italian cultural hierarchies and geographies of Vasari's legacy.
Quando il 29 luglio 1529, nella cattedrale di Barcellona, Carlo V e Clemente VII firmarono la pace, che dalla città catalana prese nome, Trivento era uno snodo importante nel piano strategico e delle operazioni militari della Corona spagnola nel Regno di Napoli. Posta, com'era, lungo la strada d'accesso terrestre al Regno di Napoli, in una zona di confine con la Santa Sede, circondata da potentati ecclesiastici come Montecassino o la badia di S. Sofia di Benevento, era inevitabile che un sovrano come Carlo V avesse mire su di essa per stabilire un controllo serrato in ambito civile ed ecclesiastico, da un lato con il conferimento del titolo feudale alla fedele e leale nobiltà e dall'altro lato controllando gli avvicendamenti episcopali sulla cattedra più antica del Contado di Molise. Eppure, nell'ambito della storia e delle vicende che riguardarono il regio patronato nel Mezzogiorno d'Italia, sulla diocesi di Trivento è stata fatta ancora poca luce, soprattutto in relazione al maggior rilievo economico e politico che ebbero altre diocesi e arcidiocesi del Regno su cui pure il sovrano spagnolo intese stabilire il proprio controllo. Il presente lavoro intende colmare questo vuoto. La storia della diocesi molisana ha rappresentato l'occasione per osservare la periferia del Regno di Napoli nell'età spagnola, alla luce delle complesse dinamiche politiche nelle molteplici e differenti relazioni tra "centri", Spagna/Roma/Napoli e "periferie" dell'Impero e del Regno. In quel vasto spazio territoriale che fu il Regno di Napoli, periferia dell'assai più ampio Impero spagnolo, si muovono le trame per la nomina dei vescovi della diocesi di regio patronato e dunque degli ecclesiastici candidati alla diocesi di Trivento. Alla luce del costante dialogo tra i centri del potere sono ricostruiti i processi di nomina e i profili dei candidati alla diocesi molisana. Quest'ultimi erano segnati da un cursus honorum di tutto rispetto, perfettamente inseriti nel dialogo e nelle trame politiche vicereali della corte napoletana. La storia che emerge è storia politica, storia sociale, storia religiosa, in un moltiplicarsi di spunti di riflessioni che inevitabilmente emergono confrontandosi con una realtà diocesana e con le linee evolutive a essa riconducibili all'indomani del Tridentino e nelle attività pastorali del clero che operava nel territorio. Quanti dei vescovi nominati dal sovrano spagnolo raggiunsero Trivento e, una volta sul posto, cosa fecero? Cosa cambiò nella storia del territorio? Seguendo le vicende della storia diocesana sono analizzati i motivi che indussero la Monarchia spagnola alla scelta di Trivento come diocesi di regio patronato e, dall'altro lato, le risposte e gli esiti che, nel lungo periodo, si ebbero sul territorio. L'intero lavoro di tesi si snoda tra i centri del potere politico chiamati a nominare i vescovi di regio patronato e la compagine locale, per quel che attiene il territorio, le strutture demografiche, il panorama socio-economico, il sistema devozionale, la composizione del clero diocesano. Tutti elementi utili a contestualizzare e tracciare la storia diocesana nel lungo periodo dell'età spagnola. ; In 1529, the 29th July, Charles V and Clement VII signed the peace in the Barcelona's cathedral, taking name from the Catalan town. Trivento was an important turning point in the strategic plan and land warfare of Spanish Monarchy in the Kingdom of Naples. Trivento was on the access land road for the Kingdom of Naples, in a border area with the Holy See, surrounded by church states, such us Montecassino or S. Sofia of Benevento. Charles V chose this land to establish civil and ecclesiastical control, on one hand, for conferring the feuds to the faithful and loyal feudal nobility and, on the other hand, for controlling the bishops election on the oldest diocese of the Contado di Molise. Between the history of the royal patronage in the Southern Italy the diocese of Trivento was not still completely known, especially in relation to the economic and political importance of other dioceses and archdioceses under royal patronage in the Spanish Empire. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap. The history of the diocese of Molise was an opportunity to observe the periphery of the Kingdom of Naples during the Spanish age, considering the complex political dynamics in their different relationships between "centers", Spain/Rome/Naples and "peripheries" of the Empire and of the Kingdom. In the vast territory of the Kingdom of Naples, the periphery of the expansive Spanish Empire, the plots for the elections of bishops of the diocese under royal patronage moved. The processes of elections and the profiles of candidates for the diocese of Molise were reconstructed in the dialogue between the centers of power. The candidates were marked by a cursus honorum respectable, they were perfectly inserted in dialogue and political plots viceregal court of Naples. The history that grows is political history, social history, religious history, in a increasing of points of view that emerge following the diocese's history aftermath of Council of Trento and in the pastoral activities of the clergy that worked in the territory. How many bishops were elected by the Spanish court, that reached Trivento and, once there, what did they do? What changed in the history of the area? Following the events of the diocesan history, the reasons that lead the Spanish Monarchy to choice Trivento for the royal patronage are analyze and, on the other hand, the responses and outcomes, that there were in the area and in the long period, were investigated. The present study ranges between the political traits of the centers of power, that elected the bishops under royal patronage, and the local partnership, considering the territory, population structures, the socio-economic landscape, the devotional system and the composition of the diocesan clergy. The aim here is to present Rome's conception and vision of patronage in Latin America at the beginning of the 19th century. From Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, the question of patronage is read in a purely political key, according to a political use of religion. Rome, on the other hand, clearly had another approach to the question. Its reading key was twofold: eminently religious, but also inevitably political in its implications. In any case, the religious need was truly primary over the political one. The religious question is confused with the political one in relation to the legitimacy of political power. The ultimate question is very essential: who legitimately holds power? In the long 19th century, two authorities, that of the state and that of the Church, confronted each other regarding decision-making powers in the Church, who can decide what. If the Holy See is not at ease with constitutional regimes, this does not prevent it from operating according to its religious purposes: ultimately it has no difficulty with the institution of patronage, but with the way it is implemented. ; Si vuole qui presentare la concezione e la visione che Roma aveva del patronato in America Latina all'inizio del XIX secolo. Dall'America Latina e dalla penisola iberica la questione del patronato è letta in chiave prettamente politica, secondo un uso politico della religione. Roma invece aveva chiaramente un altro approccio alla questione. La sua chiave di lettura era duplice: eminentemente religiosa, ma pure inevitabilmente politica nelle sue implicazioni. In ogni caso l'esigenza religiosa era realmente primaria su quella politica. La questione religiosa si confonde con quella politica in rapporto alla legittimità del potere politico. La domanda ultima è assai essenziale: chi detiene legittimamente il potere? Nel lungo '800 si confrontano due autorità, quella statale e quella della Chiesa, in ordine ai poteri decisionali nella Chiesa, chi può decidere cosa. Se la Santa Sede non si trova a suo agio con i regimi costituzionali questo non le impedisce comunque di operare secondo i suoi fini religiosi: in definitiva non ha difficoltà con l'istituto del patronato, ma con le modalità di attuazione. ; O objetivo do presente artigo é apresentar a conceção e visão de Roma do padroado na América Latina no início do século XIX. Da América Latina e da Península Ibérica, a questão do padroado é lida numa chave política da religião. Roma tinha claramente uma outra abordagem à questão. A sua chave de leitura era dupla: eminentemente religiosa, verdadeiramente primária, mas também inevitavelmente política nas suas implicações. A questão religiosa é confundida com a questão política em relação à legitimidade do poder político. A questão última é muito essencial: quem detém legitimamente o poder? No longo século XIX, duas autoridades, a do Estado e a da Igreja, confrontaram-se relativamente ao poder de decisão na Igreja, quem pode decidir o quê. Se a Santa Sé não está à vontade com os regimes constitucionais, isso não a impede de funcionar de acordo com os seus objetivos religiosos: em última análise, não tem qualquer dificuldade com a instituição do padroado, mas sim com a forma como é implementado.
Is it possible to identify models of self-representation characteristic of rural lords in 14th-15th century Italy? Are these models common to the whole of the Peninsula, from the Alps to Sicily? What are their main features and their privileged channels of transmission? What relations do they have with the city-communal world on one hand, and princely cultures on the other? In order to answer these questions, the essay examines the use of a shared courtly culture, the importance of genealogical celebrations, the patronage and cultural enterprise of the lords and the growth of their direct intellectual dynamism, ending with the renewed importance of the castle in the cultural and social self-representation of the 15th-century lords.
Il contributo è dedicato alla figura del conte Johann Joseph Wilczeck (1738-1819) e alle forme del suo patronage letterario, esercitato in almeno tre fasi e in altrettanti contesti geo-politici . Wilczeck infatti, protagonista di una fulminante (e perciò inizialmente chiacchierata) carriera di funzionario teresiano, fu inviato non ancora trentenne a Milano, nel momento cruciale dell'istituzione del Superiore Consiglio di Economia (1766). Soggiornò quindi a Firenze (1771-72), e poi per cinque intensi anni (1773-1778) a Napoli, in veste di plenipotenziario, prima di essere di nuovo inviato a Milano, dove concluse la sua carriera con l'arrivo delle truppe francesi. Il profondo coinvolgimento di Wilczeck nella vita culturale italiana, testimoniato dalla fitta serie di dediche che ricordano il distendersi dei suoi benefici "ad ogni genere e ad ogni maniera di lettere ed arti" (così Aurelio Bertola de' Giorgi), merita di essere indagato alla luce sia dei suoi compiti ufficiali, di rappresentante della politica asburgica, sia della qualità massonica delle sue amicizie. Una particolare attenzione è rivolta agli anni napoletani di Wilczeck, ispiratore e protettore (stante le testimonianze dei contemporanei) della cerchia di letterati che facevano capo ai fratelli Antonio e Domenico Di Gennaro, nelle cui residenze suburbane s'incontravano alcune figure preminenti del mondo letterario e scientifico partenopeo. The purpose of the essay is to illustrate the role of territorial ecclesiastical institutions in the organization of the Trentino lordships of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. From a de facto hegemony and control, sometimes exercised by force, we generally pass to forms of patronage endorsed by the bishop, especially between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
