The central theme of this article remains around persuasion and how it appears in the political thought of Hannah Arendt. Our purpose is to show the fecundity and the limits of this topic concerning the sphere of human affairs. We believe that an investigation about Arendt's nuances of persuasion involves two different directions, and for that we will assume two lines of thought that will allow us to step into this debate. Therefore, we will analyze the arendtian perspective as far as persuasion is concerned. On the one hand there is the theme appearance in the recovery of the experience of the Greek polis, and on the other hand its acknowledgement by the report of Adolf Eichmann's trial. We intend to explore how the issue of persuasion is stated in a contrasting way in arendtian thought. The work will be elucidated through specific considerations regarding persuasion's presence in two spaces of a public nature, which are the Greek agora and the court.
Logos is a central Greek term for the construction of the sophistic movement. Gorgias de Leontinos, one of the main representatives of the first generation of this movement, proposed to reflect, in Elogio de Helena, about the discourse as a great and sober master, able to produce persuasion in Helena and denouncing this persuasive power at the same time. In the first part of this study, we intend to situate logos as a producer of experiences in its listener, which is important in understanding the persuasive power. In the second part, the fabrication of experiences, different from persuasion, is identified with a fictitious reality produced due to voluntary deception. Because this experience of deception is voluntary, the reason for the sovereignty of logos is for Gorgias, in which speech, in addition to persuading, can serve as a possible instrument for the fabrication of learning, whose artistic experience his own text exemplifies.
Studies and experiments in social psychology, according to the view of Acsh (1951) suggest that individuals tend to mimic the pattern of behavior in a given nucleus that has a majority reflecting on the same object. Even if they reason against the contrary, these people tend to change their opinion on the grounds of the group. This Milgram group (2009) also reflects on the authority profile present in them, in which it induces those surveyed to follow a profile of influence in the formation of their choices and answers. Nevertheless, according to a psychological political analysis, it points to an influence of groups that have in it actors who exercise a certain authority, such as religious leaders, in the figure of the church, who can persuade their followers by explaining this theory. This social conformism also reflects the desire not to show up or vulnerable the majority. Following this line of social psychology, this article will explore electoral elections through the influence of religious and local leaders in the persuasion of the electoral vote.
This article aims to analyse, through the Critical Discourse Analysis and a Multimodal perspective, two front-pages of Super Notícia, a popular newspaper, to identify the relationship between the linguistic and image choices and the ideologies, hegemonies and persuasion strategies used by the newspaper's producers in search for interaction and acceptance of the product by the target audience. The analysis is based on linguistic aspects, passing through the image aspects until it reaches the explicit or implicit ideologies contained in the newspaper's front-page speech. "Critical Analysis" implies showing implicit connections and causes, since the relations between the discursive, social and cultural choices are not always transparent. The results show that, through discursive strategies, such as democratization and technologization, the newspaper seeks to persuade its audience and sell the product. Moreover, the images are used to the maintenance of practices and ideologies concerning gender, hegemony preservation and maintenance of some stereotypes.
This paper aims at analyzing, based upon French Discourse Analysis, two media videos made with official endorsement of the Ministry of Education in two different presidential contexts. Both propagandas call young people, at the post-ENEM moment, to enter Higher Education institutions through major federal government programs and public policies. Thus, it was possible to evidence the composition of the enunciation in the media objects, especially in correlation with the socio-political context. It is observed that verbal and non-verbal elements utilized in the analyzed objects intersect in the production of meanings and go beyond the mere persuasion of the target public to claim for a space in a Higher Education institution. In this paper I argue that -- even if the European Union & the United States appear to share common interests regarding Turkey -- US ability to support Turkey's EU member-ship may be, at times, challenged & undermined, preventing the United States from accomplishing its goal. One can identify some factors that explain this phenomenon: the United States is not a member of the European Union; the nature of the EU/US relationship inhibits the use of coercive foreign policy instruments, leaving room only for persuasion; the possible emergence of an open conflict between EU & us foreign policy interests; the emergence of conflicts among us interests themselves; & the way in which us policy is implemented & communicated. Finally, EU perceptions of the us may have an effect on us interests & policy outcomes. In order to validate my argument, I study the role & relevance of each one of these factors while analyzing us support for Turkey's EU membership & its possible shortcomings throughout two relevant meetings of the European Union: Helsinki European Council of I999 & the Copenhagen European Council of 2002. This paper aims at presenting some reflections upon adopting Internet memes as possibilities for teaching in the context of digital cultures. In Brazil, millions of people interact in social media, on a daily basis, by editing, sharing, reading and reacting to a great variety of graphic texts, videos, photos, and songs that reflect their everyday relationships, namely, they produce internet memes. This study is grounded on the multiliteracies perspective (COPE & KALANTZIS, 2000, 2008; LANKSHEAR & KNOBEL, 2007; LEMKE, 2009; MENEZES DE SOUZA, 2011), as well as on the studies on memes, made by Dawkins (1976), Shifman (2013, 2014), Shifman et al (2016), Chagas (2017, 2018) and Glaveanu (2018). The teaching suggestions are based on categories of memes analysis; remixing existing memes in order to explore discourses of dominant ideologies, issues of race, age, gender and social class; and reading and writing political memes, that operate as instruments of persuasion. ; This article presents a survey whose objective is to analyze the speech manifested in the slogan of a campaign for the São Paulo State Secretary of Education, promoted by the School Protection System, that, in a partnership with the Cartoon Network, encourages the delation as a mechanism to prevent and combat bullying. It is based on Greimasian semiotic theory and in the principles of visual semiotics to understand the text underlying the speech. According to the socio-semiotics discourse analysis, we intend to describe the narrative structure of the campaign, the relationships between subjects and objects of value, in order to identify mechanisms of persuasion and manipulation.
; The sensible forms that stand the daily experience of movement through urban space in outdoor advertising are one of the most conducive to the exercise of social life. On September 26, 2006, the Municipality of São Paulo, Brazil, approved the Clean City Law, seeking a ban on outdoor advertising. Since then, a fierce controversy has occupied citizens, politicians, architects, planners, publicists, and artists, among different types of actors in defense of views sometimes radically irreconcilable. It is our belief that underlying such a discussion there are different notions of happiness, individual or collective, in its particular application to space and culture of the city, in preparation of the World Cup 2014 (in São Paulo).

; OBJECTIVE: To assess if the commercialization of infant formulas, baby bottles, bottle nipples, pacifiers and nipple protectors is performed in compliance with the Norma Brasileira de Comercialização de Alimentos para Lactentes e Crianças de Primeira Infância e de Produtos de Puericultura Correlatos (NBCAL – Brazilian Code of Marketing of Infant and Toddlers Food and Childcare-related products). The commercial promotion of these products is prohibited by the Law 11,265. METHOD: Cross-sectional study conducted in 2017 through a census of all pharmacies, supermarkets and department stores that sold products covered by NBCAL in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Health professionals trained at NBCAL used structured electronic form for direct observation of establishments and for interviews with their managers. We created indicators to evaluate commercial practices and performed descriptive analyses. RESULTS: A total of 352 commercial establishments were evaluated: 240 pharmacies, 88 supermarkets and 24 department stores, of which 88% sold products whose promotion is prohibited by NBCAL. Illegal commercial promotions were found in 20.3% of the establishments that sold the products we investigated: 52 pharmacies (21.9%), four supermarkets (7.5%) and seven department stores (33.3%). The most frequent commercial promotion strategies were discounts (13.2%) and special exposures (9.3%). The products with the highest prevalence of infractions of NBCAL were infant formulas (16.0%). We interviewed 309 managers of commercial establishments; 50.8% reported unfamiliarity with the law. More than three-quarters of the managers reported having been visited at the establishments by commercial representatives of companies that produce infant formulas. CONCLUSION: More than a fifth of commercial establishments promoted infant formulas, baby bottles and nipples, although this practice has been banned in Brazil for thirty years. We think it is necessary to train those managers. Government agencies must monitor commercial establishments in order to inhibit strategies of persuasion and induction to sales of these products, ensuring mothers' autonomy in the decision on the feeding of their children.
; The thesis argues that while many planning theories have focused the sight on the social differences, multiculturalism and conflicts resolution, there is not yet sufficient acknowledgement on how these differences can be deeply unsolved and how this weakness could be strongly linked with conflicting rationalities and with a 'cognitive slipping' planes of meaning (Bourdieu & Wacquant, 1992). Especially in terms of inexplicit urban conflicts, generated by not opposite economic interests or political will, but by simply and natural differences of the cultural and behavioral baggage, the cognitive level of understanding between people involved plays a fundamental role in terms of awareness and choices efficacy. So this works wants underlines that the link between planning, governance, institutional adjustments and community engagement is, first of all, a matter of mutual deep and real understanding, rather than new form of tools and policies. Starting from the persuasion that conflicts are an incredible source of unexpected creative solution for urban contexts, planning systems and sharing values, this paper aims to probe how a 'cognitive mobilization' (Dalton, 1984) of a community, for the care and the protection of a common good, can be able to "fight for a right" in terms of acquiring political resource and skills to reach own decisions, and constructing new form of genuine power through education (Dolci, 1974) and culture against a 'dominant discourse' (Gramsci, 2007). Using quantitative and qualitative methods, the author presents two field experiences of insurgent practices in the southern Europe: (1) a traditional Case-Study of a Marine Protected Area in Arrábida, Portugal, to illustrate how a community mobilization, that aims to understand really every form of instance and claim, can realize forms of participation that, first of all, sight problems in term of resources, and then allowed people to work democratically together building new and shared solutions able to modify deeply an institutional plan that, due to a displacement between powers and values, generated forms of conflicts between stakeholders, especially in terms of economic and decision making point of view; (2) a case of Participatory Action Research in the Simeto river valley, Italy, where local communities through a strong mobilization were able to defend and took care the river, the biggest in terms of basin in a scarcity water territory, threatened by the institutional choice to collocated an incinerator in a valley strongly based on agriculture, for its economic sustenance, and deeply linked with the landscape, for its recognition and sense of belonging to . This understanding, it is suggested, has important implications for both planning theory and practice. Choosing a multi-disciplinary approach, this work attempts to explore if and how it is possible to transform the antagonism between enemies in competitive spirit among subjects, different for nature and culture, focusing on respect and mutual learning and on the building up of processes really inclusive and choices really shared
