This essay connects Antonio Gramsci's expanded concept of Marxian ideology to his training in linguistics and, broadly understood, philosophy of language in order to advance a hypothesis regarding Gramsci's views on literary criticism and aesthetic judgment. This hypothesis can be summed up in the following way: aesthetic judgment, including literary criticism, maintains a unity of form and content while rejecting facile attempts to reduce the global meaning of a "political" work of art to its ideological content, where ideology is understood in the sense of a series of theoretical propositions about the world, which reside in the realm of traditional Marxist superstructure. As a result, there is no recourse to either a scientific objectivity or a relativistic emphasis on subjectivity in the evaluation of works of art; instead, priority is given to an immanent, contextual interpretation of works of literature and culture. Such a methodology is intimately related to Gramsci's reworked concept of ideology and therefore deserves further consideration. As philosopher, Giorgio Agamben is known for his political writings. However the problem of language is an important issue also in his most recent essays. Considering a time span ranging from the late sixties until the early nineties, this article tries handing in Agamben's linguistic reflections. On the one hand, Agamben's linguistic reflection represent an essential starting point to fully understand his political proposal. On the other hand, Agamben can be considered without doubt a philosopher of language. Additionally, this article does not exclude an analysis of both the characteristics and the unsuitableness of his philosophy of language. Finally, with regard to this suggestions, it seems to be important the reference to the more general historical, philosophical and linguistic context of the period when the early work of Agamben have been published.

[ita] Il mio lavoro articola un aspetto importante del pensiero di María Zambrano: il tema del delirio. La ricerca si propone di sviscerare tale tema nell'intento di contribuire alla riflessione filosofica con un'analisi che mira a coglierlo seguendo una doppia direzione. La questione del delirio è fondamentale in Zambrano. Il delirio costituisce infatti il punto di partenza che pone in movimento la sua ragione, in un'articolazione che si concretizza nell'attenzione all'esperienza vissuta e nell'utilizzo di un linguaggio innovatore. Ho scelto di argomentarlo, presentandolo sia come possibile chiave di lettura del filosofare zambraniano, sia come argomento vero e proprio: il tema centrale, l'elemento costituente di una razionalità intrinsecamente legata alla vita. Come chiave di lettura, il delirio è il passo di apertura, la traccia di un andamento di pensiero che può anche prendere diramazioni che si spingono oltre la traccia d'inizio. Questo superamento non è un andare fuori tema, che elude il corpo a corpo con il delirio, al contrario, è rimanere fedeli all'apertura per darle respiro, per non risolverla, ma per schiuderla ad altri spazi di ragionamento, nel guadagno di affermazioni che hanno a che vedere con la verità. Come argomento vero e proprio, cioè come tema centrale del mio lavoro, il delirio si struttura in modo tematico nella sua relazione con la razionalità. La scommessa simbolica proposta da Zambrano si gioca su due punti: scoprire in che modo delirio e ragione possono convivere, senza che l'uno venga abolito dall'altra, e viceversa, vedere come il delirio possa presentarsi sempre e di nuovo quale prologo di un logos, che è uno, ma in generi ed esercizi diversi. In altre parole, l'intento di Zambrano è quello di assumere il delirio come radice di un'idea di logos accogliente, incorporandolo così nel suo modo di comprendere la ragione, nei suoi differenti aspetti e nei suoi molteplici esercizi. Il mio lavoro si articola in tre capitoli, introdotti da una sorta di introduzione, costituita da Mirada e Poiesis, che ho desiderato chiamare Per iniziare, e dalle conclusioni: Per concludere, che sono i guadagni teorici del lavoro. Il primo capitolo si concentra sul Taglio del lavoro sul delirio e, partendo dalla motivazione della scelta dell'argomento, analizza la costellazione semantica che ruota attorno al centro aperto del delirio. Sottolineando l'importanza del delirio come arché del filosofare zambraniano («En principio era el delirio», scrive Zambrano), spiego come il delirio possa diventare l'elemento movilizador dell'esperienza umana, oppure come possa convertirsi in una prigione, in un carcere, che impedisce l'intrinseco movimento della vita. Qui la questione si gioca tutta prendendo in considerazione el ensueño, il risveglio, la temporalità, e due elementi che per Zambrano sono fondamentali: la necessità e la speranza. Il delirio da cui scaturisce l'azione essenziale è infatti quello che tiene unite, armonizzandole, necessità e speranza. Il secondo e il terzo capitolo sono legati all'idea di adoperare come chiave di lettura del filosofare di Zambrano il pensiero della differenza femminile, cercando di scandagliarlo come elemento essenziale per l'apertura dei testi ad aspetti imprevisti. Il terzo capitolo Il delirio negli archetipi femminili dà voce alle figure femminili di Diotima, Antigone, Nina, dando spazio alla storia dei loro deliri, che queste donne incarnano come evento che mette in moto una ricerca di mediazioni che testimoniano che c'è sempre qualcosa che va oltre, che trascende, il recinto dei fatti, per aprirsi, con amore, all'infinita disponibilità dell'essere. Seguire Zambrano nel delirio comporta un dislocamento esistenziale che eccede la classica divisione tra teoria e prassi, perché è l'esistenza tutta, nel suo complesso, ad essere orientata dal delirio. Questa situazione di dislocamento, se non diviene straniamento, è segno dell'essere che si fa storia. ; [eng] My work develops an important aspect of Maria Zambrano's thought: the theme of delirium. The research aims to uncover this theme and make a contribution to philosophical reflection with an analysis that follows two directions. Delirium is a fundamental issue in Zambrano. It represents the starting point of her thought via the articulation of her regard for lived experience and her use of an innovative language. I discuss this issue both as a possible key to Zambrano's philosophy and as an issue worthy of inquiry per se: the core theme and constituent element of a rationality that is intrinsically linked to life. As a key to Zambrano, delirium is the beginning of a thought process that can take a different direction from its initial trace. This does not mean changing the subject in order to avoid the mail issue; on the contrary, il means keeping faith to the initial opening in order to let it develop, instead of resolving it. It means allowing further spaces of elaboration in orden to gain something from statements that deal with the truth. As an issue in and of itself, as the central theme of my work, delirium is structurally relates to the theme of rationality. Zambrano's symbolic challenge rests on two points: discovering how delirium ad reason can coexist without one abolishing the other, and vice-versa, seeing how delirium can present itself time and again as prologue to a logos that is singular, but exists in different forms and exercises. In other words, Zambrano's aim is to take delirium as the root of an idea of logos that is welcoming, so as to incorporate it in her way of understanding reason, in its different aspects and multiple exercises. By stressing the importance of delirium as the arché of Zambrano's thought, I explain how delirium may become the element movilizador in the human experience, or how it may become a prison that impedes life's intrinsic movement. The crucial issue here is to take into account el ensueño, the awakening, the temporality, and the two elements that are central to Zambrano: necessity and hope.

The analysis moves across the theory of philosophy of language and philosophy of politics, in order to focus the relationship between language and political space, and to show the basis of making community.

Existe una vasta literatura sobre el concepto de 'ideología lingüística' y los especialistas por lo general están de acuerdo en definirlo como un conjunto de ideas que sostienen los miembros de una comunidad sobre la función del lenguaje en la comunidad. No obstante, los especialistas mismos comúnmente no están de acuerdo si estas ideas son explícitas o implícitas. Los puntos diversos sobre este aspecto implican diferentes metodologías, a saber, el análisis de consideraciones explícitas sobre el lenguaje, en el primer caso; y en el segundo caso de materiales más variados. Una mejor opción consiste en distinguir creencias explícitas de supuestos implícitos. Mientras que en el primer caso el estudio se debe hacer por medio de métodos sociológicos o etnosociológicos, en el segundo el estudio se hace a través de la semiótica: los discursos que se producen en una comunidad se consideran como signos de supuestos implícitos que dicha comunidad tiene sobre el lenguaje. Este artículo hace un estudio de caso: la ideología semiótica subyacente a la desmentida en el discurso político italiano contemporáneo. ; A vast literature exists on the concept of "linguistic ideology." Scholars generally agree on defining it as a set of ideas that the members of a community hold about the role of language in the community. Nevertheless, scholars generally disagree on whether these ideas are explicit or implicit. Different views on this point imply different methodologies: the analysis of explicit considerations on language in the first case, that of a more multifarious material in the second one. However, excluding implicit ideas from the analysis is too restrictive. A better option is to distinguish between explicit beliefs and implicit assumptions. Whereas the first ones must be studied through socio- or ethno-logical methods, the second ones must be studied through semiotics: the discourses that are produced in a community are considered as signs of implicit assumptions that such community holds about language. The paper deals with a case-study: the semiotic ideology behind denegation in the contemporary Italian political discourse.

Verlagsinfo: This pathbreaking work pursues two interwoven themes. Firstly, it engages in a deconstruction of Ancient philosopher's texts - mainly from Plato, but also from Homer and Parmenides - in order to free four Greek female figures from the patriarchal discourse which for centuries had imprisoned them in a particular role. Secondly, it attempts to construct a symbolic female order, reinterpreting these figures from a new perspective. Building on the theory of sexual difference, Cavarero shows that death is the central category on which the whole edifice of traditional philosophy is based. By contrast, the category of birth provides the thread with which new concepts of feminist criticism can be woven together to establish a fresh way of thinking.

Although in comparison to other key Gramscian concepts, ideology has not been among the most studied, this is beginning to change. In particular, recent scholarship has demonstrated a diffuse and variegated usage of the term in the Prison Notebooks, as well as an innovative extension of the concept, which is articulated around a network of closely correlated terms and concepts. Nevertheless, debates remain over how to understand its meaning in Gramsci's carceral discourse, with some arguing that his distinctive conception of ideology has a "neutral", and arguably, also "positive" meaning, while others contend that it is neither "neutral", nor "positive", but a critical concept. This essay argues that Gramsci's conception of ideology is neither neutral nor positive, but rather, an eminently critical and differentiated analysis of the diverse ideological forms of consciousness through which the popular masses are enveloped within the web of a class's hegemony through the mediation of the philosophers' philosophies, the fruit of his attempt to rethink philosophy politically. In short, understanding Gramsci's conception of ideology in the full sense can only be ascertained by following the threads of his philosophical investigations in their shifts and re-elaborations.
