A sample (N = 339) of young eligible voters (age 21-24), in Cambridge, Mass., were surveyed to determine factors influencing the liberal ideology, usually observable among younger voters. The community is largely Democratic. 'Agreement on candidate and party choice is highest between the young person and his family (parents and spouse), next highest with his friends, and least high with his fellow-workers.' Lower SE groups are more likely to reject parents' politics where strict discipline prevailed. Upward mobiles tend to adopt politics of the group into which they have moved, while downward mobiles remain Republican. Ideology of the upward mobile remains with group of origin, while the downward mobile adopt parts of ideology of their new class. Educated youth are more likely to change voting patterns, and to adopt an ideology that comports with voting; the less educated appear not to require consistency on this score. I. F. Lukoff.

This research on the political tolerance among youth (high school & university students) is based on the theory & concepts by J. Sullivan & his associates (1979). The level of political tolerance of our respondents toward the least liked group depends largely on the group itself & the content of political freedom that is tolerable or intolerable. Averaging the responses to the six questions of political tolerance, only 35% of the respondents displayed political tolerance. This level of tolerance is closer to that of Israeli citizens than US or British. 9 Tables, 11 References. Adapted from the source document.

Examined is the theme that English culture is suffused with deference to political authority. Using a definition of political deference derived from the literature, little quantitative evidence was found to support the assumption that political deference is widespread among the electorate. Using evidence relating to deference among the next generation of electors, an attempt is made to assess the persistence of political deference in England. Evidence is taken from an exploratory survey of 547 fourth form pupils in Southeast England. Levels of political deference in the sample were measured using a four-item scale derived through a factor analytic procedure used on a number of multiple-choice items specifically fashioned to tap elements of deference. The levels measured suggested English adolescents are not particularly deferential, even as compared to an, albeit smaller, sample of American adolescents. In addition, factors such as type of school, school authority patterns, & SC -- which others have cited as contributing to the British approach to political authority -- explain relatively little variance in levels of deference. Moreover, evidence is provided that previous observers may have been amiss in neglecting the importance of party identification, in that there appears to be a kind of conditional deference among supporters of the governing party. A striking aspect of the South Korean political protest movement of the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s was the frequent self-immolation of young Korean activists. The author attempts to interpret the personal meanings of political suicides through an analysis of notes, letters, and diaries left by seventeen young Korean activists. (DÜI-Sen)
