The study describes a methodology which is used to estimate
the magnitude and regional distribution of food poverty among Kenyan
smallholders. One-fourth of all smalll1Older-households were estimated
to have a food intake below the recommended daily allowance. Notable
differences were found in the provincial incidence of food poverty.
Despite these inter province differences, considerable variation in food
consumption levels appeared within regions. Some possible causal factors
underlying the prevailing pattern of food poverty are brought out.

Time series evidence on Ru poverty in India over the past two decades is examined. Studies show that the incidence of poverty fluctuates in response to variations in real agricultural output per head, but there is no significant time trend. There is a statistically significant inverse relationship between Ru poverty & agricultural performance for India as a whole, suggesting that agricultural growth alone tends to reduce the incidence of poverty. Analysis for individual states reveals a somewhat different picture. The inverse relationship between output per head & Ru poverty is observed in several states, but there is also evidence that there are processes at work which tend to increase the incidence of poverty, independent of variations in agricultural output per head. While there is some evidence that a certain degree of `trickle down' is associated with agricultural growth, there is a compelling need to identify the underlining forces which augment the incidence of poverty within the Ru economy. 9 Tables, 1 Figure.
