It is well known that periodicals of low esteem, both Canadian and non-Canadian, regularly covered Montreal during the immediate post–Second World War period in ways that emphasized the city's allegedly corrupt and vice-ridden character. In the 1960s, this discourse shifted, as periodicals of all levels of prestige came to offer more appealing images of Montreal's cosmopolitanism and quality attractions. Magazines aimed at tourists emphasized Montreal's cosmopolitanism and modernity, highlighting the availability of up-to-date consumer goods influenced by European style and the technological marvels being constructed for the 1967 World's Fair, Expo '67. Guides to entertainment in Montreal offered inventories of sophisticated, "European" dining experiences and chic nightlife venues. Through an examination of a variety of periodicals aimed at visitors to Montreal or inhabitants of the city anxious to discover its new attractions, this article traces Montreal's reinvention of itself as a cosmopolitan, forward-looking metropolis.
This article explores the possibility of renewing the comparative study of Canadian and Australian literatures through an alertness to parallel developments in mid-range magazines and middlebrow print cultures in Canada and Australia in the early- to mid-twentieth century. While scoping the possibilities of full-fledged comparative studies, its focus is a case study of the Australian magazine BP: a well-capitalized, plush upmarket publication published by the Australian steamship company Burns Philp. The BP Magazine promoted travel between 1928 and 1942 as the nation underwent a transition from settler colonialism to vernacular modernity. The magazine lays bare tensions between literary aspiration and commodity culture, sophistication and escapism, edification and entertainment, and modernity and primitiveness. The aim of this case study is to raise questions that might be asked of both national literary cultures about the role of travel, modern consumer culture, magazines, and nationhood as the scales of literary values changed during the development of local middlebrow values and tastes.
Between 1938 and 1942, border-crossing Norwegian-Canadian author Martha Ostenso published three short stories in Chatelaine magazine, stories that engage in complex ways with themes of femininity, nationalism, and consumerism. In this article, we consider how the context of Chatelaine shapes and complicates readings of these stories by placing the stories in conversation with surrounding material, including advertisements and editorial content. The fiction, we argue, unsettles romantic tropes and nationalist rhetoric, and contests the correlation between the attainment of happiness and the acceptance of class and gender norms. In examining authorial identity, textual complexity, and print cultural contexts, we show how middlebrow magazines are a vibrant means of understanding middle-class culture's anxieties and aspirations.

Anne of Austria offers an important part, yet neglected, in the the development of royal iconography in seventeenth century France. Devoided from management of power under the reign of her husband Louis XIII, she is however the subject of many representations. The number of her images increases when she accedes to the responsibilities of the government at the death of the king, in 1643, becoming regent in the name of her minor son, Louis XIV. Beyond its majority in 1651, she maintains herself at a prominent place, until the death of Mazarin in 1661. During these two decades, a deep political crisis in France culminates in the so-called Fronde. In this context, the image of Anne of Austria becomes the instrument of a visual narrative on monarchical authority and for the defense of the royal power. Crossing a large corpus of representations of the regent with textual sources, this thesis analyzes the visual construction of this narrative, and its effects on the evolution of the image of power in France after the reign of Louis XIII. In contemporary legal and symbolic literature, "majesty" is presented as he essential quality of the sovereign and the mark of his identity. It must then be visually translated in a female incarnation, despite the fundamental laws, in particular the Salic law, which however exclude women from power. The abundance of the images collected for this thesis, nearly five hundred items, offers an essential source to understand how the queen was able to overcome this constraint and contribute, by renewing its models, to the representation of the monarchical authority. This thesis allows us to reconsider the relationship between women and power. To analyze these different issues, the thesis is organized in four parts. The first part attempts to understand the image of the reigning queen, analyzing in a first chapter the legal definition of the queen, to show how the legal order determines the symbolic one. One can thus understand how the marriage of the queen in 1615 and her arrival at the court can be apprehended as an "iconographic birth". The second chapter explores the different features of this portrait of the queen, showing that it is at the same time a revelation of personal characteristics of the queen and a reaction to the queen's political and civil situation. The second part raises the question of the means implemented to operate the transformation of this image, which allows the queen to appear as regent of the kingdom. The third chapter analyzes in particular the chronological stages of this transformation, while the fourth chapter studies, from a practical point of view, the "fabrication" of this image. The third part then considers the content of the images, drawing up a three-step analysis of its iconography. The fifth chapter addresses the body of the queen as a support for the moral dimensions of her portrait. The sixth chapter deepens this question in the religious perspective, studying how the regent manages to produce the image of a queen "très chrétienne". The seventh chapter concludes this iconographic analysis by studying the political dimension of Anne of Austria's image. The fourth and last part gives finally an analysis of the way these images "operate". The eighth chapter shows how the situation of the queen's representations in decor is decisive for their interpretation, considering the cases of the royal residences and the private interiors. Finally, the ninth chapter proposes a study of the performance of images, extending the analysis to the public uses of representations of the queen, in monuments or during ceremonies.

; Throughout its history, Séminaire de Québec acquired works of art by way of purchases, donations, and legacies from the personal collections of priests who are members of the religious community of the institution. Whether these were objects of personal consultation, study collections for Université Laval — founded by the Séminaire in 1852 — or decorative artifacts in common spaces, some images stand out for the subject they represent and call for a reflection on the values that they can constitute within the institution. The strong representatives of Rome in the collection of prints imposes a questioning on the multiplication of objects on the same subject. This observation is also contemporary to the increase of the long-stay of priests in the Eternal City during the second half of the 19th century. Their travel reports allow them to state their perceptions of Rome, its monuments, its museums, its churches, its religiosity and its customs. From these stories, themselves generators of mental images, stands out the travel diary of the Archbishop of Quebec, Mgr. Joseph-Octave Plessis. Written in 1819-1820, this document allows to formulate hypotheses on the preparation of the journey of priests in Rome in the 19th century. Equally relevant, the travel diary of Abbot Benjamin Pâquet, written between 1863 and 1866 during his doctoral studies in theology at the Roman College, is a source from which concrete facts guide the definition of the visuality of Rome, understood as a urban ensemble and as an ideal and mythical place. From the descriptions of the sensory experiences that traveling priests make of places and objects, the physical images representing Rome kept at the Séminaire and at the Université acquire value and meaning. Concordance of objects and comments generates a corpus representative of a visualization of Rome and the Vatican at the Séminaire and at the Université during the targeted period. As such, graphic works of Roman monuments by Giuseppe Vasi or Giovanni Battista Piranesi, portraits of prelates of the Roman curia and of the Pope by the painter Vincenzo Pasqualoni, and albums of prints or souvenir photographs, create a set of references for the institution whose visual and cultural significance is based on facts and on a phenomenology of the sensitive experience. The fostering of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the members of the Séminaire is a constancy that emerges from the analysis of textual sources. Around the same time of Abbot Pâquet's journey, the Pope continued to apply strategies to consolidate his moral and symbolic authority, while his temporal authority was weakened by political upheavals in Italy. These strategies were characterized, among other things, by dogmatic decrees, the funding of archaeological sites, the restoration of monuments, artistic commissions, and reissues of prints in Rome, which influenced the development of the library and of the collections of Séminaire de Québec. To analyze these modes of correspondence which are both physical (objects), symbolic (images), spiritual and political, we have used the rules of the "common domestic world" defined by Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot (1991) which are characterized by respect and recognition of authority and filiation. These make possible to understand the functioning of a life in common within a micro-society, like at the Séminaire; rules also influence its system of values. An intellectual link with the ideological, humanist and artistic values promoted by the Holy See explains the forms that the presence of the Pope and famous Vatican works can take in the imagination of the priests of the Séminaire. The visual culture of Rome and the Vatican, in the collections of the institution, is thus defined by the presence of a papal authority, guardian of the classical humanities, which is embodied through actions and aesthetics valuing Christianized ancient Roman heritage, historicism, purism and Raphael ism.
