Sundanese books have been printed since 1850 up to the present. This article tries to draw a configuration of printing books in Sundanese for about 100 years in the Dutch colonial and Japanese occupation period. Printing and publishing books in Sundanese was initiated by the Dutch colonial government for the sake of management of their colony. This article discuss three aspects in print culture in Sundanese: (1) the role of government printing house and private publishers, (2) the cultural relationship between manuscript and printed books (3) the changes after the emergence of printed books. Print culture in the Sundanese-speaking community was born and has developed. Its facets have changed from time to time. We notice more than 2200 Sundanese books were published up to the second decade of the 21st century when the technological innovation has proceeded in an enormous pace. However, the importance of Sundanese publication has not diminished in terms of nurturing educated citizens in this digital-oriented society and supporting cultural identity.

This article investigates the significance of print cultures to women of the second wave of feminism. It takes a broad view of a male-dominated publishing industry and highlights the various ways that women intervened and responded through their writing, publishing and organisational skills and political commitment. It discusses the shifts in female publishing cultures, emboldened by the overarching Women's Liberation Movement and empowered through the establishment of separatist networks. Feminist activism, I argue, may be discerned in the impetus behind the construction and publication of feminist magazines. The last section considers the different publishing hinterlands of three feminist magazines, overlapping in their concerns, but distinctive in their approaches: Shrew, Spare Rib and Womens Voice, and argues that such magazines of the second wave represent the diversity and print activism of the WLM.

International audience ; This paper addresses the relationship between the famous anarchist geographer Pyotr Kropotkin and his most important British editors, John Scott Keltie and James Knowles. It analyses their unpublished correspondence, which has survived, for the most part, in the state archive of the Russian Federation. Drawing on recent literature on anarchist geographies, transnational anarchism and historical geographies of science, it examines the material construction of Kropotkin's works on mutual aid, decentralisation and 'scientific anarchism', which were originally published as articles for British periodicals. The paper argues that Kropotkin's acquaintance with liberal editors was not only a matter of necessity but a conscious strategy on his part to circulate political concepts outside activist milieus, thereby taking advantage of the public venues then available for geographers. In this way, Kropotkin succeeded in getting paid for working almost full-time as an anarchist propagandist. The paper also contributes to the wider field of critical, radical and anarchist geographies by providing early examples of knowledge struggles against Creationism, Malthusianism and environmental determinisms which have lessons for the present.

This dissertation cuts across established academic disciplines and uses the idea of a kaleidoscope as a productive model to debunk generalized ideas put forward by other scholars and navigate through the complexities of ideas about the Orient in early America. This book combines research into textual mobility and meaning making processes that were shaped from within the ideological, political, and cultural contexts. Therefore, a blend of methodologies―building on knowledge and concepts from distant disciplines like biology and linguistics―and the kaleidoscope as a tool for cultural analysis will provide a rigor with which to approach abstract and sometimes elusive aspects of cultural material. What may seem like a linear narrative turns out to be a choir of overlapping and contradicting voices. This book intends to give a sharper and empirically-derived as well as -driven understanding of many voices; that is, the roles the imagined and sometimes geographical Orients played in the broader cultural, ideological, and political contexts of late colonial as well as early American culture. The goal is to showcase the scope of what the Orient came to mean transcending narrow systems of meaning.

From the current vantage point of the transformation of books and libraries, B. Venkat Mani presents a historical account of world literature. By locating translation, publication, and circulation along routes of bibliomigrancy Mani narrates how world literature is coded and recoded as literary works find new homes on faraway bookshelves.Mani argues that the proliferation of world literature in a society is the function of a nation's relationship with print culture. Moving from early Orientalist collections, to the Nazi magazine Weltliteratur, to the European Digital Library, Mani reveals the political foundations for a history of world literature that is at once a philosophical ideal, a process of exchange, a mode of reading, and a system of classification.

My doctoral project examines the role that serials and printed ephemera played in animating ordinary Philadelphians into revolutionary action. I am interested in the intellectual life of historically inarticulate peoples, and I argue that the moments of intersection between crowds and texts recorded how American colonists contributed their own thoughts toward erudite theories surrounding representative government, liberty, and commercial networks. The central research question asks: what role did texts play in the transformation of British subjects into dissident Americans? Where earlier studies of the Revolution have emphasized either radical argumentation or revolutionary activity, I show how the material text functioned as a vital intermediary by creating a persuasive ideal of the American identity through the physical ubiquity of colonial prints, the distillation of printed ideas into imitable action, the reiteration of instructive texts through public performances, and a consistent message across all media of the virtue and necessity of an American community. In so doing, the thesis no less crucially explores print materials and modes of reader reception deemed relatively inaccessible in previous studies of reading in America. The project concludes by looking forward toward the sectionalism of the nineteenth century arguing that print created a perception of unity without a meaningful unification of the divergent regional practices.

Recent work has shown that large publishing houses, such as Murray in Britain, Hachette in France and Perthes in Germany, played a primary role in shaping geographical knowledge. This paper's contribution is an analysis of the collaboration between Élisée Reclus (1830-1905) and Hachette over the Nouvelle Géographie universelle (NGU), a classic work in French geography that encompassed nineteen volumes between 1876 and 1894. Drawing upon archival sources, such as the published and unpublished correspondence between Reclus, his collaborators and the publishers, I argue that Reclus' negotiations with this mainstream publishing house were part of a political strategy that was deployed by early anarchist geographers to disseminate their views among broader audiences than just specialist and militant groups. This was a successful bargain for both sides, as there were approximately twenty thousand copies of each volume of the NGU printed. To understand this strategy of public communication and political influence, I examine the international group of anarchist geographers who were involved in Reclus' editorial endeavour within the wider context of Hachette's editorial networks. This involves situating the knowledge they produced in two locations: Paris, where Hachette's headquarters were established, and Clarens, the Swiss village to which Reclus was exiled, and where he worked with collaborators such as Pyotr Kropotkin and Léon Metchnikoff to establish the 'centre of calculation' for his large encyclopaedia.

The indigenous book publishing business for Sundanese-speaking communities started in the early 20th century, when the nationalist movement was set in motion. The modern school system had continued to spread in colonial society from the mid–19th century. The more education spread, the more literate people there were among the indigenous population. The indigenous book publishing business responded to the demands of this newly-emerging readership. Book publishing finally turned into a business by the 1920s. It seems to have provided distinctive readings from those provided by Balai Poestaka. The indigenous publishers played a supplemental role in nurturing print culture in the colonial context. Both government and private indigenous publishers contributed to promote modern readership and a colonial print culture. The book publishing and print culture in regional languages like Sundanese were nurtured in the colonial period and grew to constitute a medium to decolonize knowledge and knowledge culture.

This review of Richard Whitman's Architecture, Print Culture, and the Public Sphere in Eighteenth-Century France (Routledge, 2007) examines the relationship between architectural discourse and political power in Frame from 1671 until the end of the ancient regime. The volume successfully foregrounds the socio-political functions of architectural writing, though the use of Habermas' thesis proves to be less convincing. Some of his arguments also tend to be simplistic or schematics .Nonetheless, this volume is a valuable contribution to the study of French architecture during the eighteenth century.

The lapsing of the printing laws in 1695 led to an unprecedented development in the publishing of printed matter during the following century. By the second half of the eighteenth-century an increasing number of newspapers and periodicals fed a growing public appetite for news and comment, with particular interest in details of the private lives of public figures: politicians, the military, actors and actresses, as well as the aristocracy. The London theatres quickly understood the advertising potential of widely distributed daily publications, and thus theatrical performance and performers took regular space in these newspapers. This chapter discusses how two actresses, Sarah Siddons and Mary Robinson, both came under the spotlight of intense scrutiny from the press, and the different ways in which they attempted to mitigate its effects.

Beginning with Christian missionary efforts to create a standardized Yoruba print language in the mid-nineteenth century, the Yoruba-speaking region of southwestern Nigeria was rapidly integrated into a network of print production that spanned the Atlantic Ocean. The emergence of a local reading public engendered the desire of administrative and religious stakeholder agencies to dictate the development of a print culture in southwestern Nigeria. These agencies saw their work on the production and dissemination of literature as a political and moral investment in the region, one that would pay dividends with the development of a Yoruba reading public whose worldview aligned with their own. This dissertation examines the strategies used by missionaries, philanthropists and government administrators to control how and what Nigerians read, from the colonial period through independent rule and up to the economic collapse of the 1980s. It argues that independent Nigerian governments echoed the desires of earlier agencies that literature be used to teach moral lessons or practical skills, with the aim being the education of a nationalized citizenry. Utilizing missionary and government archives, along with publisher interviews and library records, I show the extensive human and monetary resources invested in influencing a Nigerian reading public under both colonial and independent rule. The dissertation concludes that the readers of English and Yoruba literature who composed this localized public accepted the instructional agenda being disseminated through print and ultimately embraced the utilitarian pleasures of their books.
