Today, the global pharmaceutical product value chain is becoming increasingly complex and this has led to the emergence of 'multiple quality standards' for medicines. But this non-uniformity in the quality of medicine is also contingent upon both the regulatory milieu in the country of manufacture and the export destination of a pharmaceutical product. The focus of this paper is upon the domestic pharmaceutical market in India, where policy makers often face a trade-off between what has been called 'high quality' and 'affordable quality' medicines. With India being recognised as the pharmacy of the developing world, it is believed that there is need for strict quality specification and enforcement within the country in the first place. Against this background, there have been several reports where doubts have been raised regarding quality of medicines available in India. This paper, by mapping the perspectives of several stakeholders, attempts to bring clarity on issues related to poor quality medicines and suggest institutional reforms in the Indian regulatory regime, looking at good and bad practices followed both domestically and internationally.
Public safety agencies across the nation are increasingly using drones for public safety applications. However, drone technology has both positive and negative effects on the public. This paper analyzes the use of drones in public safety and the effects of such use, while providing a recommendation on how a public safety agency can deploy a drone program while considering the benefits and burdens. Three immediate and important uses are outlined. They include the utilization of drones for search and rescue, disaster response and crime scene photography. In each application, drones do a better and more efficient job than personnel because they have better access and suitability for tasks that may be dangerous. Privacy concerns, the military perception, aerial disturbances, and distrust of law enforcement highlight the most critical public concerns that must be considered before launching a drone program. Laws, regulations, and best practices are critical for establishing trust and alleviating fears with the public. Fears are resolved with an effective communication strategy, a good policy and adherence to Federal and State laws. Even though law enforcement drone use is controversial, if not already doing so, public safety agencies should consider their use. If applied and used sensibly, drones have the potential to be incredible assets.
As the Public Education Network (PEN) and its member local education funds (LEFs) are committed to creating systems of public education that result in high achievement for every child, we believe that equal opportunity, access to quality public schools, and an informed citizenry are all critical components of a democratic society. Part of making available a high-quality public education is ensuring that students and teachers spend their days in safe schools, which are free from violence, free from fear of harassment and threatening situations, and conducive to teaching and learning.Five local education funds have helped their communities broach these difficult issues with conversations on national and local issues of safety and violence in schools. During the last part of 2000, more than 250 people participated in conversations in Buffalo, NY; Lancaster, PA; McKeesport, PA; and Paterson, NJ. In February 2001, the local education fund in Atlanta, GA hosted a conversation that included students, teachers, principals, law enforcement officials, parents, and other community leaders. These local education funds conducted their community dialogues on school safety and violence as part of an assessment of their community's readiness and capacity to address the health and well being of children in their public schools. This assessment included looking into issues of health insurance coverage, coordination of health and social services for children and their families, maintaining safe learning environments, and the level of resources devoted to children's health and social services. Participants, therefore, understood that these community dialogues are not just "one-shot" efforts at addressing school safety and violence but as a part of a more comprehensive approach to address the systemic issues affecting children in their public schools. The local education funds used The 1999 Metropolitan Life Survey of the American Teacher, Violence in America's Public Schools: Five Years Later, as a starting place for their conversations, to ground their local experiences in a national context. This Lessons from the Field provides a summary of the MetLife survey and highlights findings from the conversations in four local education fund communities. (Law enforcement officials are referred to in this publication as "officers." All teachers and students referred to here are from public schools, and all "schools" referred to are public schools.)
The Consumer Product Safety Commission, one of the agency's two current Commissioners stated recently, is at a crossroads. According to Commissioner Thomas Moore, either Congress will reverse the agency's steady decline or the Consumer Product Safety Commission will become so weakened as to be irrelevant. This report details a background of the commission, recent recalls, congressional concerns, and more as related to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Food supply and food safety are major global public health issues, and are particularly important in heavily populated countries such as China. Rapid industrialisation and modernisation in China are having profound effects on food supply and food safety. In this Review, we identified important factors limiting agricultural production in China, including conversion of agricultural land to other uses, freshwater deficits, and soil quality issues. Additionally, increased demand for some agricultural products is examined, particularly those needed to satisfy the increased consumption of animal products in the Chinese diet, which threatens to drive production towards crops used as animal feed. Major sources of food poisoning in China include pathogenic microorganisms, toxic animals and plants entering the food supply, and chemical contamination. Meanwhile, two growing food safety issues are illegal additives and contamination of the food supply by toxic industrial waste. China's connections to global agricultural markets are also having important effects on food supply and food safety within the country. Although the Chinese Government has shown determination to reform laws, establish monitoring systems, and strengthen food safety regulation, weak links in implementation remain.
Testimony issued by the General Accounting Office with an abstract that begins "Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO discussed the results of its ongoing examination of the safety and efficacy of the anthrax vaccine, focusing on the: (1) need for a six-shot regimen and annual booster shots; (2) long- and short-term safety of the vaccine; (3) efficacy of the vaccine; (4) extent to which problems the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found in the vaccine production facility in Michigan could compromise the safety, efficacy, and quality of the vaccine; and (5) effects of the anthrax vaccine on children, pregnant women or lactating women."

The Road Safety Authority has responsibility for co-ordinating the development of Ireland's Road Safety Strategy. The Government's road safety target of no more than 252 deaths per annum by the end of 2012 was achieved in 2009, when the number of road collision deaths in Ireland fell to 239. The reduction in the number of fatalities was achieved through robust actions in terms of education and awareness, road engineering, and enforcement, including significant legislative milestones. The challenge is now to ensure that the impact of these measures on collision levels is sustained and enhanced into the future through continuous education, enforcement and road engineering measures and initiatives. IPH welcomes the opportunity to respond to this consultation given the significant burden of injury, disability and mortality associated with road traffic collisions on the island of Ireland. IPH supports the development of evidence-based strategies and actions which can maintain a transport system, in which the safety of all road users is paramount.
The use of RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) or drones, as they are mostly known, has become very popular in recent years, for commercial and recreational use, with millions of devices sold and new users adopting the technology every year. An important pedagogical work must be carried out, to educate people in this new technology, making everyone aware of the impact in privacy, security or safety they can cause if they are not used in a responsible way. The AiRT Project will put efforts in making this educative work, developing standards for a safe and ethical correct use of RPAS flying indoor for the Creative Industries. Seeking support in current RPAS regulations that cover outdoor airspace, this document will provide references and technical means to design and implement safe RPAS operations. The aim of this deliverable is to highlight the ethics/ security, privacy and safety issues that are related to use of drones in confined spaces. ; This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement nº 732433.
The increasing proportion of women in the workforce raises a range of gender-related questions about the different effects of work-related risks on men and women. Few studies have characterized gender differences across occupations and industries, although at this time, the gender sensitive approach is starting to acquire relevance in the field of human preventive medicine. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has encouraged a policy of gender equality in all European member states. Italy has adopted European provisions with new specific legislation that integrates the previous laws and introduces the gender differences into the workplace. Despite the fact that gender equal legislation opportunities have been enacted in Italy, their application is delayed by some difficulties. This review examines some of these critical aspects.
