"Getting a qualitative article or book published involves more than simply doing the research, writing it up, and sending it off. You also need to know how to navigate the social relations of presenting your work to the journal editor or book publisher--and how to craft your message to them--if you want to be successful. Written by a highly-respected publisher of qualitative research, this brief, practical resource shows you how to identify the right home for your work. It also guides you through the publications process-- from crafting the abstract to writing, production, and marketing--once you've found the best publisher. The author -demystifies what publishers and journal editors do, how they make their decisions on qualitative articles, research studies, and methods books; -discusses edited books, how to publish from your dissertation, and when to consider open access and electronic publications; and -includes case studies, appendixes, forms, and resources to help the aspiring academic"--

"This book addresses foundational areas of qualitative writing (such as journal articles and dissertations), aesthetic representations (including poetry and autoethnography), publishing, and reflexivity in representation in one practical and engaging text based on real experiences. Author Maria K.E. Lahman draws on her experiences as a qualitative research professor and writing instructor, and as someone who has published widely in scholarly journals, employing both traditional and more innovative forms of writing. The first part of the book covers writing tips; how to represent data; how to write a qualitative thematic journal article; how to write a qualitative dissertation; and provides guidance on the publication process. The second part encourages the qualitative researcher to move beyond traditional forms of writing and consider how qualitative research can be represented more aesthetically: as poems, autoethnographies, and visually. The book concludes with a chapter on reflexivity in research representations. Throughout, the author provides vivid examples from her own work, and that of graduate students and colleagues"--
`The book makes a valuable addition to the field…providing a very useful resource for those evaluating, engaging in, or embarking on, research' - Monika Buscher, Department of Sociology, Lancaster University This book provides a discussion of qualitative research methods from an ethnomethodological perspective. Detailed yet concise, Paul ten Have's text explores the complex relation between the more traditional methods of qualitative social research and the discipline of ethnomethodology. It draws on examples from both ethnomethodological studies and the wider field of qualitative research to discuss critically an array of methods for qualitative data collection and analysis. Key features of the book include: · A broad coverage - includes discussions of interviewing, the use of documents, ethnography, and methods of data analysis · An understanding of different research traditions and illustrations of how these may be used in practice · Concise chapter summaries and further reading sections to aid student learning With a student-friendly structure, this engaging book will be an invaluable resource for both students and researchers across the social sciences.

"Qualitative research is a paradigm that embraces the uncertainty of everyday life, broadly conceived. Variables such as race, class, and gender are such an intricate part of human life they can never be isolated, so the research used to study lived experiences must take into account social identities such as race and gender. Introduction to Intersectional Qualitative Research makes those identities of the researcher and the participant central to the task of qualitative study. This book will serve as a guide to teach ways of thinking, being, and doing that will shape a student's journey to becoming a qualitative researcher. Following the progression of the research process, this book will integrate the basics of qualitative research with intersectional issues that are crucial to take into account at every step of the research process. Each chapter will include an opening vignette of real stories from both novice and expert researchers showing struggles and successes in qualitative research. Exercises along the way will help students learn the basics of qualitative research while simultaneously interrogating their positions and identities. The book concludes with the writing of a research proposal, with sections on writing up your complete research for dissemination"--
Big Data for Qualitative Research covers everything small data researchers need to know about big data, from the potentials of big data analytics to its methodological and ethical challenges. The data that we generate in everyday life is now digitally mediated, stored, and analyzed by web sites, companies, institutions, and governments. Big data is large volume, rapidly generated, digitally encoded information that is often related to other networked data, and can provide valuable evidence for study of phenomena. This book explores the potentials of qualitative methods and analysis for big data, including text mining, sentiment analysis, information and data visualization, netnography, follow-the-thing methods, mobile research methods, multimodal analysis, and rhythmanalysis. It debates new concerns about ethics, privacy, and dataveillance for big data qualitative researchers. This book is essential reading for those who do qualitative and mixed methods research, and are curious, excited, or even skeptical about big data and what it means for future research. Now is the time for researchers to understand, debate, and envisage the new possibilities and challenges of the rapidly developing and dynamic field of big data from the vantage point of the qualitative researcher.

"'Narrative Portraits in Qualitative Research' offers an analytical approach to qualitative data. Through narrative portraiture, research findings can be contextualised in broader social narratives without losing sight of the unique personal qualities of the research encounter. Drawing a parallel between the artistic work of a portrait maker in depicting a subject - sometimes an object - and the work of the researcher in exploring people's experiences, narrative portraiture invites a close-up into a person's narrated and embodied experience and argues that one of the main research findings in qualitative research is the person themselves; their circumstances, and their life story. The book proposes four approaches to narrative portraiture: (1) a systematic approach to narrative analysis, (2) the use of phronesis in narrative portraiture, (3) the concept of 'imagined portraits' as a collaborative approach between visual arts and social sciences, and (4) the use of 'performative portraits' both as an analytic tool and product for research communication. This book will help qualitative researchers create first-person narratives that will give a glimpse into the participants' lives in a way that is simultaneously deep, concise, and evocative"--Taylor & Francis website
