; Quantitative Easing is colloquially called "printing money". However, behind Quantitative Easing stands far more than just the expansion of the monetary base. Although Quantitative Easing is an unconventional instrument, the BoJ has been using it since 2001. The idea of Quantitative Easing refers to the thought experiment of the economists Milton Friedman. In his paper: "The Optimum Quantity of Money", he describes the idea of a "Helicopter Money Drop". In this idea, a helicopter, drops money over the population of a nation. Through the additionally provided money the price level rises and deflation can be prevented. In Chapter 2 the author reports about the economic policy concepts, their actors and targets. Further, the author looks at the monetary policy, the monetarist principles and the (post-) Keynesian monetary policy. In the chapter 2.4 the author describes the conventional as well as the unconventional monetary policy instruments. Chapter 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3 describes the procedures of the individual central banks and their impact on the economies. In Sections 3.4 and 3.5 major economic critics and proponents of Quantitative Easing to speak. The Master Thesis ends by a Conclusion, which provides an overview of the efficiency of Quantitative Easing. ; Stefan Friedrich Strohmaier ; Zusammenfassungen in Deutsch und Englisch ; Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Masterarbeit, 2016 ; (VLID)1392039
This thesis revolves around some central aspects of the empirical spatial economics literature, which studies the influence of space on economic relationships. The article in Chapter 2, titled "Exports and Olympic Games: Is There a Signal Effect?", deals with the potential effects of hosting the Olympic Games on countries' exports. In contrast to earlier contributions, the article shows that hosting or applying for the Olympic Games does not necessarily has a positive and lasting effect on countries' exports. Specifically, this Olympic effect vanishes, once the Olympic hosts are compared to appropriate control groups such as the OECD countries, and not to all remaining countries of the world. The article in Chapter 3, titled "Nuclear Accidents and Policy: Notes on Public Perception", analyzes the effects of the nuclear accident in Fukushima in 2011 and the subsequent nuclear phase-out decision on the subjective perception in Germany. Subjective perception is captured through several independent items from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), including concerns about the environment and concerns about the reliability of nuclear energy. While the accident increases the probability to be worried about the environment, the phase-out decision decreases the worries about the security of nuclear energy. These effects are interrelated with the distance between the respondents' place of residence and the nearest nuclear facility. In Chapter 4 the article titled "Urban Renewal after the Berlin Wall: a place-based Policy Evaluation" evaluates a $2.3 Bn. urban renewal program designed to promote the recovery of 22 neighborhoods in Berlin, Germany. Such programs have become established instruments to mitigate the negative effects of urban decline. The study employs a quasi-experimental research design by comparing housing prices in the target areas over 20 years to various control groups, including areas with similar preconditions which were ultimately not selected for the policy and structurally similar transactions based on propensity score matching. The results show, that the policy was effective in increasing the housing stock quality in the target areas. Compared to similar areas not targeted by the policy, the share of building in bad condition decreased by 25% over the program period, and the value increased by over 50%. There is, however, no evidence that this is a causal effect. Also, there is no evidence for any external effects, which is astonishing given that such housing externalities are often used to justify the expenses for similar policies. Finally, there is evidence that the evaluation of place-based policies is sensitive to unobserved local differences, especially when there are but a few treatment or control areas. The article in Chapter 5, titled "Winner Picking in Urban Revitalization Policies - Empirical Evidence from Berlin", evaluates whether local authorities strategically pick winners when selecting the targets for urban revitalization policies. The chapter analyzes the selection process leading to the designation of five large urban revitalization areas in Berlin, Germany. The article estimates the influence of long-term trends in two key attributes – the unemployment rate and the share of residents of immigrant background – on the probability of being selected as a target area, while holding the current levels of these attributes constant. The results are as expected: local authorities, while choosing from a pool of areas with high levels of unemployment, prefer areas which show first signs of a recovery or a gentrification process. This effect is interpreted as winner picking. In summary, the results of this thesis show that it is crucial to take spatial aspects into account when evaluating economic relationships, especially in an urban or regional context. It also becomes obvious, that conventional estimates might be biased in face of spatial dependence, and that quantitative spatial methods can help reducing this bias. In the light of the thematic broadness and the complexity of the quantitative spatial economics literature, these results help to explain the current dissemination of spatial methods into the applied economics literature.
; The aim of this Masters thesis is to verify the effectiveness of the Quantitative Easing Programmes of Japan, Great Britain, the USA and the Euro zone. As Quantitative Easing is not a common means applied by Central Banks, targets and tasks of Central Banks are dealt with first, followed by an analysis of Quantitative Easing as one measure of a less conventional monetary policy. Doing so, all possible effects as well as potentially arising dangers and risks are explained. Subsequently, the economic situation of the countries in question and their way of carrying out Quantitative Easing Programmes are dealt with in detail. The main part of this Masters thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part methods and techniques that can be applied in the empirical verification of the effectiveness of Quantitative Easing are illustrated in more detail while the second part deals with Quantitative Easing Programmes of particular economic regions. The effectiveness of every single countrys programmes is examined with the help of the statistical methods mentioned above. The findings of this investigation prove Quantitative Easing to have a positive though only short-term impact on the real economy. Further findings show that the extent and duration of this positive impact differ in the economic regions examined. This can be due to various reasons. On the one hand there are strong temporal differences between the individual Quantitative Easing Programmes and, on the other hand, we must not forget the fact that some of these Programmes have not been completed yet. Unfortunately, despite these findings it cannot be said for certain that the positive effects on the real economy are due to Quantitative Easing only. ; Thomas Jandrisevits, BSc ; Abweichender Titel laut Übersetzung des Verfassers/der Verfasserin ; Zusammenfassungen in Deutsch und Englisch ; Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Masterarbeit, 2017 ; (VLID)2268505
In the first essay, Distortions in the Neoclassical Growth Model: A Cross Country Analysis, I show that shocks that express themselves as total factor productivity and labor income taxes are comparably more synchronized than shocks that resemble distortions to the ability of allocating resources across time and states of the world. These two shocks are also the most important to model. Lastly, I document the importance of international channels of transmission for the shocks, given that these are spatially correlated and that international trade variables, such as trade openness correlate particularly well with them. The second essay is called Monetary Business Cycle Accounting for Sweden. Given that the analysis is focused in one country, I can extend the prototype economy to include a nominal interest rate setting rule and government bonds. As in the previous essay, distortions to the labor-leisure condition and total factor productivity are the most relevant margins to be modeled, now joined by deviations from the nominal interest rate setting rule. Also, distortions do not share a structural break during the Great Recession, but they do during the 1990's. Researchers aiming to model Swedish business cycles must take into account the structural changes the Swedish economy went through in the 1990's, though not so during the last recession. The third essay, Consumer Confidence and Consumption Spending: Evidence for the United States and the Euro Area, we show that, the consumer confidence index can be in certain circumstances a good predictor of consumption. In particular, out-of-sample evidence shows that the contribution of confidence in explaining consumption expenditures increases when household survey indicators feature large changes, so that confidence indicators can have some increasing predictive power during such episodes. Moreover, there is some evidence of a confidence channel in the international transmission of shocks, as U.S. confidence indices help predicting consumer sentiment in the euro area.
We define quantitative map literacy (QML), a cross between map literacy and quantitative literacy (QL), as the concepts and skills required to accurately read, use, interpret, and understand the quantitative information embedded in a geospatial representation of data on a geographic background. Long used as tools in technical geographic fields, maps are now a common vehicle for communicating quantitative information to the public. As such, QML has potential to stand alongside health numeracy and financial literacy as an identifiable subdomain of transdisciplinary QL. What concepts and skills are crucial for QML? The obvious answer is, "It depends on the type of map." Therefore, our first task, and the subject of this paper, is to develop a framework to think and talk about the panoply of maps in a way that permits us to consider the range and distribution of QML content. We use an equilateral triangular plot to conceptualize maps in terms of locational information (L), thematic information (T), and generalization-distortion (G-D), and parameterize the plot with an L/T ratio (horizontal; reflecting the historical practice of cartographers to distinguish locational-reference maps from thematic maps) and G-D levels increasing from base to apex. We show positions for a wide variety of maps (e.g., topographic maps, weather maps, engineering-survey plots, subway maps, maps of air routes, a cartoon map of Orlando for tourists, driving-time maps, county-wide population maps, county-wide multivariable population and income maps, world political map, land use maps, and cartograms). The analysis of how these maps vary across the triangle allows us to proceed with an examination of how QML varies across the panoply of maps.

This paper explores the effect of quantitative easing in the US. It discusses the financial crisis in the US economy and the policy response of the US government. It examines the effect of quantitative easing on various macroeconomic variables of the US economy. The paper researches the impact of quantitative easing on asset prices and inflation. It explores the effect of quantitative easing on employment in the US. Also, it investigates the impact of quantitative easing on GDP and economic growth in the US economy. It probes the effect of quantitative easing on income inequality in the US. Again, it scrutinizes the international spillovers of quantitative easing in the US. Finally, the paper inspects whether quantitative easing may lead to higher inflation in the future and, more importantly, may lead to another economic crisis in the future.

These measure the overall effectiveness of the legislative process. Further refinements that measure target sub-groups are needed. For example, we can set metric that measure individual committee performance which will allow for granular measurements that can be aggregated.
This dissertation presents a general method for the specification and quantitative evaluation of information systems security. This method allows to monitor the evolutions of an information system in operation, as well as to compare the impact on security of possible modifications of the functioning. It relies on a formal specification of the system security policy, augmented by a model of the vulnerabilities observed in the real system in operation. Then, a security measure represents the difficulty for an attacker to exploit the vulnerabilities and defeat the objectives defined in the security policy.Information systems security policy specification necessitates the definition of a rigorous and expressive framework. Furthermore, the language should be general enough to be usable in the context of an organization. The method defined and used in this work is based on an extension of deontic logic, enriched with a graphical representation.Vulnerabilities of the information system are described by a model called a privilege graph. These vulnerabilities, probed in the system, may have various origins, such as incorrect operation of the protection mechanisms of a computer system, or delegation of privileges in an organization. The assessment of a weight to these individual vulnerabilities allows the definition of highly relevant and global quantitative measures of security. Two practical examples are presented to illustrate the methodology: the study of a medium-size bank agency; and the observation of the security evolutions of a large computer system in operation.
