Hvorfor er ikke Norge med i Den europeiske union?
In: Internasjonal politikk, Band 67, Heft 3, S. 413-425
ISSN: 0020-577X
While a number of answers have been given by election research and electoral sociology why Norway is not a part of the European Union there is still room for alternative perspectives. An important but overlooked reason might be how the Norwegian population sees itself in the European context. Norwegians view themselves as open, small and healthy group, whereas they view Europe as a closed, large and sick entity. This view has not developed overnight, but is an outgrowth of largely historical reasons that date as far back as year 1660 and were strengthened by the events that took place in both the 19th and 20th century. This article discusses some key areas for international child policy. Which reason dilemma exists in the situation of children? To what extent can they live and how these basic dilemmas are affected by politics? I present two opposites in the vision on childhood, a utilitarian vision that looks at childhood as a preparation on a growing up: 'Mr. Grad Grind', taken from a character in a novel by Dickens, and a romantic vision that emphasizes on childhood as a value itself, 'Emile' taken from a debate book of Rousseau. Different varieties of child policies are then placed in tension between these poles through the rest of the article. Adapted from the source document.
Den rasjonelle diktator
In: Internasjonal politikk, Band 68, Heft 3, S. 404-414
ISSN: 0020-577X
Explores the question why dictators such as Robert Mugabe or Kim Jong Il implement mad policies that are driving the economic activities of their respective countries into the ground. The main reason for this is that dictators are trying to increase or retain their power by their domestic and foreign policy choices, and that these choices have to be understood from this perspective by those countries who choose to deal with them. For example, a common foreign policy choice of a dictatorship is to restrict trade to better control the country's economic output. The correct understanding of dictatorships is also the first step towards a successful foreign aid policy. L. Pitkaniemi

Den kinesiske middelklassens stotte til partiet: Fornuft, folelser og nasjonalisme
In: Internasjonal politikk, Band 66, Heft 4, S. 645-654
ISSN: 0020-577X
An explanation for why the success of the Communist Party of China (CPC) relies heavily on the middle class and the rational, emotional and national reasons for why their support continues. According to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) the strong yearly economic growth has lifted 15% (or 200 million people) to the middle class in China, which has become the group that most benefits from the status quo. While only 5.4% of Chinese belong to the CPC in entrepreneurs this percentage rises to 30-60% depending on the region. Thus even if the middle class shows often apathy towards politics, they still employ party membership as a means to success. L. Pitkaniemi

Norman Angell og The Great Illusion
In: Internasjonal politikk, Band 64, Heft 2, S. 257-279
ISSN: 0020-577X
Few books on war & peace have sold more than Norman Angell's The Great Illusion (1910). Few books have been more debated; few have been more misunderstood. This essay reviews the key argument of The Great Illusion, & shows how this book -- & its curious author -- played a formative role in the emergence of JR as a social science around the time of World War I. First, the book offered an incisive criticism of the approach of Realpolitik. Second, it introduced an alternative approach to modern interstate analysis -- an approach that hinged on the concept of interdependence. Third, the book sparked one of the first scholarly debates between Realists & Liberals on the causes of war & the preconditions of peace. These are only some of the reasons why this book deserves to be shortlisted as an influential classic in the field of International Relations. References. Adapted from the source document.
Afrikas horn: et lappeteppe ev kriger
In: Internasjonal politikk, Band 62, Heft 4, S. 559-578
ISSN: 0020-577X
The article analyzes the wars & conflicts of the Horn of Africa from a regional point of view. Although it is argued that the many conflicts largely arise for reasons internal to the individual state -- in particular, due to tensions between groups & the state stemming from the way the state formation is constituted -- it is also pointed out that the dynamics of these conflicts can only be understood in a regional perspective. As armed opposition groups use neighboring countries as bases for their attacks on the regime, & as networks of alliances are built around the principle of "my enemy's enemy is my friend," the different conflicts are interwoven into a regional conflict pattern. As the states of the region are chronically conflict-ridden & failing to maintain monopoly of violence throughout their territories, they are challenged by liberation movements that assume many of the characteristics ordinarily understood as prerogatives of the state. 14 References. Norwegian Courts and Sámi Law
In: Arctic review on law and politics, Band 12, S. 179-185
ISSN: 2387-4562
For decades, Norway has been viewed as a role model when it comes to safeguarding Sámi rights as an Indigenous people in the Nordic Countries. Among other reasons, this is because Norway is the only country with a Sámi population that has ratified ILO Convention No. 169. Also, Norway has adopted a particular land law where one of the purposes is to survey Sámi rights to land and water. It is also said that Norway has worked actively to ensure adoption of the 2007 UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Norway has gained international recognition for this work, among others from former UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous People James Anaya, who in his report on the situation of the Sámi people in Norway, Sweden and Finland, stated that Norway, since passing the Finnmark Act 2005, has set an important example for the other Nordic countries (para 44).

In this article, the way the Turkish state treats Kurds is put under the spotlight. The Kurds in Turkey have been subjected to extensive oppression since the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. The author places oppression of the Kurds in the context of official dogmatic Turkish nationalistic ideology, Kemalism, which is based on the political philosophy of the founder of the Turkish republic, Mustafa Kemal "Ataturk." The military have assumed the position of his foremost spokesmen after Ataturk's death. It was hoped that the process of adaptation to the ED would result in ending the 80-year-long oppression of the Kurds & the other minorities, after Turkey acquired candidate status to the EU in 1999, but the country's powerful military are trying to thwart this process. The article is discussing how the military are using their role in the Kurdish question to hamper the democratization process. In Turkey there is widespread agreement that the unsolved Kurdish question is the main reason for the problems which have arisen in connection with the process of adaptation to the EU. References.
