Entropy and recycling and recycling: Some examples ; Entropie et recyclage Entropie et recyclage: Quelques exemples
Recycling helps to limit or slow down the creation of entropy of the material system; however, full recycling appears unrealistic, in particular due to physical degradation of the material. The article aims to show that very high recycling rates can only be achieved through "loop" recycling, as opposed to "cascading" recycling. Examples of this are the cases of a few materials: firstly, the case of cardboard paper in 2000 at European level. In addition, plastics and, very succinctly, aluminium. In addition, the case of glass refers to an article already published in Waste, Sciences and Techniques No 13, 1994.However, for a more comprehensive view, the analysis will have to incorporate the energy, environmental, economic and social balances. ; International audience A limit to sustainable development could be the exhaustion of some natural resources. A counterpoint is represented by a global closed-loop replenishing system, but real cycles cannot be completely closed. Concerning material systems a factor of entropy lies in losses of physical properties. However recycling is a way to reduce or slow up entropy of material systems. To reach very high recycling rates, loop recycling, and not only cascade recycling, is needed.Cases of some materials provide illustration : at first the case of paper (and cardboard) for the year 2000 at an European level (on the basis of data from the European Recovery Paper Council). The case of plastics is surveyed too ; by comparison with paper, their recycling rates are low ; however not only mechanical recycling but also chemical (feedstock) recycling and energy recovery have to be taken into account. Another case is aluminium, with a high recycling rate, and the case of glass has been considered previously (Déchets, Sciences et Techniques n° 13, 1994).For a global view, the logic in terms of material entropy would have to be supplemented by energy and environmental balances and economic and social aspects. ; Recycling helps to limit or slow down the creation of entropy of the ...

Assemblages of Private Waste Management and Recycling: the Case of the Anderlecht Marketplace in Brussels
PurposeThe paper aims to build a political understanding of private waste management. Although the politics of waste is a matter of increasing interest across the social sciences, private sector choices about waste prevention and recycling – and their impacts on society – receive little attention in waste scholarship.Design/methodology/approachLeveraging assemblage thinking and the actor-network theory, this paper provides an empirical analysis of waste prevention and recycling practices in the marketplace of Anderlecht, in Brussels. This particular case is of interest because it concerns the largest and most popular city marketplace and a resource for the most socioeconomically precarious among Brussels' population.FindingsOver the past decade, under the banner of sustainability, the private company that managed the site developed multiple initiatives to prevent litter and control the costs of waste management by introducing new regulations and engaging with both the private and non-profit sectors.Originality/valueYet, the impact of these initiatives remains unknown with regard to the community served by the market and its vendors in particular. This paper presents the results of a series of fieldwork activities and interviews with key informants and actors in waste management conducted over more than a year since November 2016. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Time for Waste, Waste of Time? Assessing Heterogeneous Values of Saving Time from Recycling

This thesis concerns the behavior of individuals toward their wastes and more precisely their recycling motivation. The issue is to study this behavior by exceeding the traditional marketing approaches on the subject. These traditional studies mainly focus on the attitude as an antecedent of the recycling behavior and on the theory of planned behavior to understand how this attitude can be turned into effective behavior. Indeed, these studies allow a better understanding of the recycling behavior but they show some limitations and in particular they do not consider the context of the adoption of recycling behavior which is characterized by a lack of autonomy and by the role of the public administration. To overstep these limits, this research aims at establishing the relevance of the application of a contemporary theory of motivation: the theory of self-determination. This theory takes into account the need for autonomy of the individuals in their daily activities but also the role of external factors on this feeling of autonomy such as the public administration. Thus, this research highlights that the autonomous motivation is the form of motivation which involves the most positive behavioral and attitudinal effects. This form of motivation can be hindered or fostered by the perception of the style used by the public administration in its will to obtain the compliance of the citizens with the public policy of waste management but also through the image the administration projects to the citizen.

Recycling of WEEE . we do not stop progress!
National audience ; High Tech products, smartphones, LCD screens, hybrid vehicles, CD-DVDs, rechargeable batteries, etc. which make our day-to-day life, require rare metals whose production is controlled by a limited number of countries, mainly China, Russia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Brazil. The specific supply risks linked to the oligopoly or quasi-monopoly situations of these strategic metals have prompted the European Union to look for alternative supply routes, the first being the recycling of spent electronic and electrical equipment. Among these, indium and lanthanum are elements that have many high tech applications. Indium is a rare metal associated with the mining of zinc and tin, largely dominated by China. Lanthanum, like all rare earths, does not exist individually in deposits, but is also associated with other metals. The recycling of indium and lanthanum contained in end-of-life equipment therefore appears to be the only alternative to addressing the risks of scarcity. And, beyond the economic and strategic aspects, the recycling of these metals can be an interesting alternative to reduce the large-scale exploitation of mineral deposits containing them and thus to preserve the environment. In this context we propose a process for lanthanum electroplating and indium extraction and electrodeposition in weakly hygroscopic ionic liquids, 1-octyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide and 1-butyl-1-ethylpiperidinium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl ) imide.
