Despite long-standing calls to rethink the state 'as a social relation', reified understandings that view the state as a differentiated institutional realm separate from civil society are notably persistent in academic and political debate. By contrast, this paper focuses on the myriad ways in which everyday life is permeated by the social relations of stateness, and vice versa. The paper reviews the conceptual difficulties in defining 'the state' and suggests that these can be addressed in part through a focus on the mundane practices that give rise to 'state effects'. It considers how the concept of prosaics, based on the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, might provide a fruitful approach for studying such practices, their geographies and the geographies of state effects. A case study of the governance of anti-social behaviour in the UK is used to show the potential application of this approach in empirical research. The paper concludes with some reflections on possible future avenues of research.

This experience has required adaptive capacity of researchers, leading them to adopt different research postures according to the stages in the interactions with practitioners. Researchers considered practitioners as knowledge providers by associating them to articfact co-design, or as experts to be equipped by involving them in participatory research projects.

Agriculture is nowadays expected to adopt "multifunctional" land use practice as a contribution to sustainable development of rural areas. We started a participatory research study in the Coteaux de Gascogne (France) to prospect local paths for agricultural systems contribution to landuse sustainability. The area considered is a study-site of the Long term Ecosystem Research network.Our first common objective is to understand how family-farm dynamics contribute to land-use change at the landscape level. We started therefore a spatially-explicit and exhaustive study of agricultural land use and its change since the 1950s at a reference area of limited size (4 villages). The method consists in survey at every farmer using land in the area using both a semi-directive questionnaire and farmland maps and the building up of a Geographic Information System (GIS). We present here the first results of our assessment of the variety in family-farms and their land use practice (56 farms). We discuss our perspectives for using these results and helping local land use development.
