AbstractRivalry is pervasive in politics and beyond. Drawing on unique survey data, this article examines how instructors can draw on students' perceptions of rivalry to explore different aspects of the rivalry concept. The data show that different ways in which students tend to think about rivalry tend to reflect differences in scholarly conceptualizations of interstate rivalry. The data also suggest that referencing sports rivalries may be useful to introduce the concept of rivalry, drawing on parallels between sports rivalries and interstate rivalries and students' greater interest in and familiarity with sports than international affairs. This article provides an understanding of how students tend to think about rival relations to help instructors effectively lead classroom discussions on interstate rivalry.

A review essay on a book by Don Lavoie, Rivalry and Central Planning: The Socialist Calculation Debate Reconsidered (New York: Cambridge U Press, 1985 [see listing in IRPS No. 51]). This work concisely describes & critically analyzes the socialist calculation debate of the 1930s. The debate, which posited advocates against critics of central planning, was a reaction by European economists to early Soviet economics, particularly during the postrevolutionary period. Weaknesses in Lavoie's arguments include a sharp separation of theory & empirical research, enabling him to neglect some of the historical experience of planned economic growth, & his exclusive concentration on microeconomics, when comparative studies require a macroeconomic perspective. However, his book serves to reanimate an important debate & contributes to the prospect of reintegrating economic theory with more general social theory. A. Waters

ABSTRACTWe analyse how product line rivalry by multi‐product oligopolists is affected by market size and product substitutability. We show that the width and degree of overlap in competing product lines is determined by the tension between two effects: the drive to 'be where the demand is' and the desire to weaken competition and intra‐firm product cannibalization. Product lines are shown to be wider and more overlapped in large markets and when product substitutability is weak. Our analysis suggests that firms can increase their profits by agreeing not to overlap their product lines.
