International audience ; The purpose of this paper is to describe Math High School (MHS), an experimental teaching project promoted by the research group of Mathematics Education at the University of Salerno. MHS has been devised to surpass the dichotomy between scientific and humanistic cultures, responding to the daily, social, politic, national and world challenges. In this process, Mathematics is the common denominator between the two cultures. In this paper we describe the theoretical context of MHS, the education innovations of the adopted methodologies and the first year experimentation activities.

The Objective of this doctoral Thesis in Educational Sciences is to demonstrate that the School Sports Sections contribute to the Democratization of Schools. The Aim of this Demonstration is to understand the Project to prevent School Dropout underlying the Signing of a Contract of Engagement by all the Student-Athletes. The Problem is that the Sports Sections are unevenly established in Priority Education and outside Priority Education. It is therefore useful to understand the Student-Athlete's Commitment and the Challenges of democratizing Sports Sections. Our Case Study made in Alsace shows that for Participants outside Priority Education, these Devices should not be opened in all Middle Schools and High Schools or to all Students, for Fear of « trivializing » them. The Commitment of the Student-Athlete is a Factor of Sports and School Emulation. This justifies a Democratization of the Sports Sections, all the Student-Athletes signing a Contract of Engagement which empowers them to focus on Sports and Studies. The doctoral Thesis opens Four Avenues of Research linked to the Common Foundation of Knowledge, Skills and Culture: "rational" Recruitment of the Student-Athletes, Association of Sports and educational Vocations with Priority Education Sports Sections, Massification of Sports Sections and Diversification of Offers of reinforced Sports Practice, « anticipated » Engagement of the Pupils of CM1 and CM2 to optimize their Chances to enter and stay durably in School Sports Section from the 6th, thanks to the academic Support and the Sports technical Improvement. La publication tous les trois ans des enquêtes PISA offre un cadre d'analyse plus qu'intéressant en matière de politiques éducatives. Alors que les résultats de l'enquête PISA 2012 sont disponibles depuis décembre 2013, il convient de revenir sur les principaux enseignements que cette série d'enquêtes nous a fournis concernant le poids des parents dans les résultats scolaires et la problématique de la mixité sociale dans les écoles du secondaire. Dans cette étude, nous montrons que la Belgique a l'un des taux de ségrégation scolaire les plus élevés de l'OCDE. On retrouve également de forts taux de ségrégation dans les deux communautés prises séparément. La ségrégation sociale est plus forte en Communauté française qu'en Communauté flamande. Entre, 2003 et 2009 la ségrégation scolaire a stagné en Communauté flamande et a augmenté en Communauté française. Depuis 2009 la ségrégation a augmenté en Communauté flamande et diminué en Communauté française pour atteindre en 2012 des niveaux comparables dans les deux Communautés. Nous montrons que la relégation par filières et les pratiques scolaires de redoublement et de transfert d'élèves entre établissements affectent significativement la ségrégation sociale. En 2012, les filières expliquent 45% de la ségrégation sociale en Communauté flamande contre 20% en Communauté française. Nous concluons par des recommandations politiques pour promouvoir plus efficacement la mixité sociale et améliorer les résultats scolaires des élèves défavorisés.

La participation des parents à l'école : une revue de la littérature Les parents participent activement à l'éducation de leurs enfants à tous les âges, et dans les pays développés les écoles encouragent de plus en plus leur participation à la vie scolaire. À ce jour, les économistes ont toutefois porté peu d'attention aux déterminants, aux niveaux et aux conséquences de l'implication parentale dans l'éducation. Cette revue de littérature se concentre sur l'implication parentale dans l'éducation d'enfants en âge scolaire. Nous passons en revue l'ensemble de la littérature économique sur le sujet, et examinons de manière sélective les études théoriques et empiriques provenant d'autres disciplines. Les études portant sur l'implication spontanée des parents peuvent répondre à la question de pourquoi les parents s'impliquent. D'autre part, les réformes récentes au niveau local et national peuvent améliorer notre compréhension de l'influence de ce que les parents font sur la réussite de leurs enfants. Nous utilisons cette distinction pour organiser la littérature et souligner les questions ouvertes dans chaque domaine.

The education sector has historically been plagued by ideological clashes between various pressure groups. These groups only agree on one thing: the urgency for initiating far-reaching reforms. The aims of the reforms are at the heart of the dispute. For some, education is seen as too elitist and thereby contributes to reproducing social inequalities. Therefore, more equitable educational policies should be urgently developed. Others, on the contrary, believe that educational differentiation and efforts to make education more inclusive and humane have gone too far. Refocusing would be necessary. In this enlightening book, education academics Roger Openshaw and Margaret Walshaw set out to critically examine the dynamic relationship between the poles of attraction around which the apostles of educational reform usually gravitate namely, excellence and equity. The authors' choice to specifically focus their study on mathematics and science is not accidental. Since the establishment of public education systems in the 19th century, these curriculum areas have always occupied a prominent place in the school curriculum. Indeed, mathematics and science are seen as essential to national economic security and military predominance in an increasingly competitive environment. Consequently, any perceived underachievement – whether real or presumed – in these academic subjects tends to provoke the most heated debate over the nature and intent of school curricula, The chapters of this book are structured chronologically. The authors address five pivotal periods during which the prevailing public discourse in education was that of insufficient academic performance, particularly in mathematics and science. These are: • The interwar years (1929–1938); • Post-SecondWorldWar (1950s/1960s); • The economic crisis and its impact on education (1970s); • The market-driven reforms on education (1980s/1990s); • The accountability years of the twenty-first century (2000–2020). Openshaw and Walshaw innovate by examining these periods through the prism of transnationality. The researchers tried to better understand the mechanisms by which the concerns expressed in one country amplify those existing in another. Given the magnitude of the task, the two researchers had to limit the scope of their study to four liberal, English-speaking democracies - namely, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Their analysis suggests that, in terms of public education policies, political and economic power is a catalyst for transnational borrowing. Small nations like New Zealand and Australia tend to spontaneously grant the most powerful players in the global economy like the United States and the United Kingdom some form of intellectual superiority. The radical curriculum innovations developed by big nations in response to an impression of an educational crisis are often mechanically seen as inspiring pedagogical breakthroughs that the small nations hasten to borrow and adapt to their own cultural context. Transnational Synergies in School Mathematics and Science Debates does not present groundbreaking research discoveries. Yet it is rich enough in unpublished scholarly content to interest educational specialists, while remaining accessible to a wider readership including mathematicians and scientists but also, hopefully, policymakers.

This study explored how diversity among newcomer youth may explain differences in engagement and school success. Youth identifying fear-based reasons for relocation reported being less involved within their schools than those who identified social mobility. In fear-based relocation, youth often viewed Canada as a temporary place to live and gain transportable skills, leading to less school and community engagement. Clearly, as youth approach and connect with school in different ways, understanding the motivations behind youths' varied levels of engagement could assist school personnel in contextualizing engagement according to youths' goals. Les jeunes identifiant les raisons de leur déménagement comme étant fondées sur la peur sont moins impliqués au sein de leur école que ceux invoquant la mobilité sociale. Dans le cas d'un relogement basé sur la peur, les jeunes perçoivent souvent le Canada comme un endroit temporaire pour vivre et acquérir des compétences transférables résultant de moins d'engagement communautaire et scolaire. De toute évidence, l'approche des jeunes ainsi que les liens qu'ils entretiennent avec l'école se manifestant sous de nombreuses formes, comprendre leurs motivations aux différents niveaux d'engagement pourrait aider le personnel scolaire à contextualiser cet engagement selon les objectifs de ces jeunes.
