In the last few decades, liberal political theorists have been increasingly concerned in the way states sponsor religious displays in their expressive capacity, that is, without coercion. ¿Are these forms of symbolic religious establishment permissible in a state that is legally separated from the church? This question gains relevance in the Chilean case, wherein the authority commemorates a variety of religious rituals inside the government palace. The one that arouses more resistance among the growing population of atheists, agnostics and non-believers in general is the giant Christmas crèche or Nativity scene. This article draws on Cecile Laborde's recently influential theory of "minimal secularism" to argue that the crèche in La Moneda only becomes politically problematic if it sends a message of civic exclusion to a vulnerable and subordinate identity, an argument that is hard to follow in the case of its critics.
The article surveys relevant documentation on religious education produced by both the State and the Roman Catholic Church in Colombia between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 21st. It is submitted to a hermeneutic examination to detect in the texts the foundation of religious freedom which, within the framework of the political Constitution and the Second Vatican Council, contributes to generate authentic religious formation from an education that respects the secularism of the State and favors the rights of those who profess the various religions that coexists in the country, and even those who deny their membership to any of them. It proposes a revision of the legal framework of the relation between the State and the Roman Catholic Church, a historical determinant of the greater or lesser laicity of Colombian society.
This article approaches the theme of the predatory aims of colonial and neocolonial instrumentalization of christian faith, anthropology, ecology, and politics. This work proposes the neologismnecroecotheologyandinstrumental subjectivityas keys of transdisciplinary interpretation of the human-environmental imbalance, above all in times of planetary crisis such as that which the pandemic imposes on us. In the same way, it shows the inflection point between European secularism and colonial religious subjectivity imposed in invaded lands. Using the works of activists of liberation theology and philosophy, human rights, and related disciplines, the article connects theology, politics and ecology in one platform of analysis, discussion, and proposals of resolute alternatives. The piece concludes with one of these proposals, another neologism, ecosacrality, a counter-hegemonic vision from beyond the christian world, that seeks to re-balance and re-unite the human-environmental relationship. The article discusses, from the perspective of the sociology of religions, history and political science, the new relations between the Mexican State and religious groups and Churches, which have traditionally been characterized by conflicts, encounters, disagreements and tacit or de facto agreements. As a result of the electoral victory of President López Obrador in 2018, by means of an apparently not very understandable alliance between parties and sectors of the left and right, his approach to the Evangelical Churches and political formations emanating from them has attracted attention, which has been widely criticized and discussed in public opinion. In this regard, based on a historical-political framework and the reflections of two of the leading experts on the subject in Mexico, Bernardo Barranco and Roberto Blancarte, the objective of this article is to propose possible explanations and provisional hypotheses about the reconfiguration of the relationship between Churches and State in the country. These go beyond the political figure of the president and make sense of the long-standing and recent historical antecedents, as well as the government's intentions and actions aimed at a regime change not exempt from political pragmatism and tensions.
This essay attempts to analyse the political, economic, social and religious history of Iran in the 20th. Century. It begins with a critical study of the Pahlavi dynasty and continues with Iran's Shi'ite Islamic Revolution led by the Ayatullah Khumayni, enemy of the Shah and founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran in February 1979. Khumayni proposed the political, economic and social possibility that religion would be an alternative to capitalism, to the dynasty in power, to secularism and to the Shah Muhammad Reza Pahlavi. Khumayni`s regime was also abusive, and came to be as repressive as the Shah's. Iran's extreme nationalization plans under Khumayni's goverment experienced a systematic process of revisions, obviously after Khumayni's death in 1989. These revisions and changes in the politics, and the economy of the country led to an increasing opening to privatization, capitalism and globalization due to the more moderate governments that followed after Khumayni's death, mainly those of Rafsanjani and Khatami. The contrast between the two periods of the Islamic Republic is so evident that a Second Republic of Iran was founded and developed. This essay analyses these issues up to Khatami's government and it has a historical, social, economic and their political interpretation.
; The Part II of this essay analyses the profound transformations of the economy, the industry, the bank system, and in general de Iranian society, after the triumph of the Iranian Islamic Revolution back in 1979. This Part II also deals with the fact that Khumayni, since his arrival to power, proposed the political, economic and social possibility that religion would be an alternative to capitalism, to the dynasty in power, to secularism and to the Shah Muhammad Reza Pahlavi. Khumayni`s regime was also abusive, and came to be as repressive as the Shah's. The contrast between the two periods of the Islamic Republic is so evident that a Second Republic of Iran was founded and developed. This Part II also provides a number of tables and statistical data, which guides de reader to an easier understanding of the numerous transformations of Iran in the last decades of the 20th century and the first years of the 21th century.
Since the adoption of the Constitution in 1978, the «religious question» has undergone several changes. From a legal perspective, the most relevant de velopment has undoubtedly been the transition from a totalitarian, confessional state to a democratic state characterized by positive secularism. From a social perspective, and due to the new system of religious freedom, Spain has moved from being a country with a single faith to one based on religious pluralism. Article 16.3 of the Constitution mandates public authorities to take the religious beliefs of Spanish society into account. It is now time to consider to what extent this mandate affects schools.
Concordats do not fit well in democratic systems. The ideology of the Catholic hierarchy does not offer contents for the pact that improve the guarantee that the pluralist State provides to the right of religious freedom. Through the study of several clauses of the agreements in force with the Catholic Church, we can verify the capital importance of interpreting the agreements in accordance with the Constitution and outside the ecclesiastical postulates.
; José Colom Víctor (1854-1913) was a heterodox and complex character at a time of great ideological convulsions. Republican, atheist, follower of the modern school of Ferrer and Guardia and extensive training, belonged to a traditional family of Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz) in which conservatism was another sign of his genealogical identity. Man of culture and great economic level, he faced his family and the bourgeois and political elites of his people. At his death he left a medium fortune that he wanted to apply to the creation of a Foundation that demonstrated the falsity of all religions. More than a hundred years later, his intentions, embodied in his will, have not yet come true.
; [Abstract] The repression exerted by the Franco regime on teachers mainly affected people with a left-leaning ideology who defended Republican secularism. This circumstance was quite common among the members of the Spanish Federation of Education Workers, especially among the organization's leaders. One of these leaders was Víctor Fraiz Villanueva, a native of Pontevedra, who was court-martialed twice because of his political, union and teaching activities. He was tried in 1934 and again in 1937, and was eventually executed by a firing squad. This article examines the last three years of his life.
; Abstract: Augusto Del Noce's reflections on modernity range from the analysis of revolutionary phenomena to the recovery of traditional values in secularized societies. From this point of view, he belongs to the current of political thought that in contemporary times has attempted to rethink the category of secularisation in order to move away not only from secularism, which does not admit any relationship between religion and the public sphere, but also from an archeological utopia that seeks to re-establish a close link between religious values and the institutional structures of politics. Today's politics must overcome this sterile antinomy in order to establish a healthy relationship between the ethical-religious dimensions of democracy and its inescapable autonomy.
; This article analyses how European democracies are tolerating - if not promoting -the proliferation of denigrating messages towards those citizens who live their religion, especially Catholicism, and demand the presence of this experience in the public sphere; suffering discrimination that is systematically protected by political institutions, reaching levels of hate crimes that would never be admissible in relation to gender, race, disability or sexual orientation. Religiously motivated hate crimes against Catholicism have become the norm, legitimising affronts towards a religion that is caricatured as colonialist and followers who are labelled as privileged exploiters, all of this being the product of a self-interested confusion between the phenomenon of secularisation and that of secularism. Thus, from the legal-political premise of the secularity of the State, any manifestation of a Catholic believer who, with absolute respect for democratic values, proposes his or her principles as propositional values for society and public life, is demonised as fundamentalist; An attitude that, for the sake of social peace and as a manifestation of a secularism that has become an ideology that seeks to eradicate from the public sphere any link to God in human lives and their structures, is paradoxically tolerated in relation to objectively fundamentalist religions or in relation to positions that are viscerally hostile to religion. We consider that this treatment is applied to Catholicism in order to silence its moral influence, since, in addition to being a fundamental agent in the historical process of institutionalisation of temporal power, it constitutes a bulwark against any abuse of political meddling in people's lives. In short, in order to establish the State's single way of thinking, the aim would be to delegitimise the Church's evangelical message in its denunciation of any kind of state interventionism, dependence and control that violates the full development of freedom and human dignity. ; peerReviewed
This research explains the principles of good Christian education in Zacatecas from 1895 to 1905. In this period, the Church and Catholic militants assumed a liberal political stance to protect themselves from the State's secularizing onslaught. To do this, they developed the socio-political movement of neo-Christianity. The project had several pillars: press, theater, schools, labor organizations, political groups, and associations of various kinds (e.g., pious, moralizing, literary, and so forth). A part of these social activities was focused on protecting the poor and a good Christian education; the primary purpose was to dignify the human condition with work instruction and the strengthening of perfect morality and order through religious, personal, and social civility. In this Christian model, the Catholic child is a promoter of moral change in the domestic and public environment. In Zacatecas city, the priest José Anastasio Díaz López, in the neighborhood of "La Estación del Ferrocarril," began in 1891 the formation of the "Congregación de las Hijas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús y Santa María de Guadalupe," to spread the Piarists-school and good Christian education. To compensate for poverty and offer a home to poor children, he established an asylum and promoted an apostolate from 1895 to 1905. At the institution, first letters education and instruction for work were given in workshops of different trades. In methodological terms, with the historiography of the social history of education, the political and educational context that rises from the secularization and secularism of the State was addressed. Furthermore, with primary sources, the religious congregation's creation, the Piarists-schools' opening is described. Moreover, the asylum for children and the basis of the pedagogy of prevention and the perception of good Christian behavior in religious, personal, and social civility norms were analyzed.

Contemporary hostility towards Muslims at the global level and the consolidation of Islam in the geopolitical context as an anachronic alterity to the West cannot be understood without addressing the dynamics of the LGBTQ globalization framework. Although this hostility has so far encompassed very diverse areas like the compatibility of Islam with democracy, the regulation of the visibility of Islam in the public space, and the institutionalization of Islam and its relation to immigration, currently there has been an intensification of a praxis of control over some Muslim subjects by contemporary nation-states. These practices have been accompanied by a certain rhetoric on antiterrorism, securitization, nationalism and patriotism, where the LGBTQ question has played a fundamental role. This phenomenon highlights the emergence of a specific form of Islamophobia—referred to as 'queered Islamophobia' in this article—related to what Puar (2007) coined as 'homonationalism' more than a decade ago to denounce an aspect of modernity marked by a convergence between diverse state practices, transnational LGBTQ politics and the emergence of new Islamophobic discourses nourished by the neoliberal instrumentalization of LGBTQ. The homonationalist logic is underpinned by a culturalist discourse that promotes a dichotomous view of the world, where the West —modern, secular and LGBTQ friendly— finds itself face to face with its alter ego —orientalized, anachronistic, Islamic fundamentalist and LGBTQ phobic. This confrontation becomes effective through the transnational production of two antagonistic subjects. National homosexual subjects can only exist outside the limits of religion embodying agency and resistance, and their national legitimacy is done at the expense of their depoliticization and their participation in the subalternization discrimination and criminalization of Muslim sexual-racial subjects. They, in turn, embody neo-Orientalist ideas that link Islam with a lack of agency, depravity and/or sexual repression and LGBTQ phobia, and seem to be invariably evaluated through the lens of LGBTQ Western neoliberal secularism. The theoretical construction of Muslim sexual-racial subjects and so-called Muslim homophobia is, at this time, central to debates on values and securitization in the West and is used to justify repressive antiterrorist measures within Western nation-states (Haritaworn, 2008). Hostility towards gender and sexual diversity connected to Islam and/or Muslims has been conceptualized in different ways. Authors like Abraham (2010) refer to it as hegemonic Muslim homophobia, while Massad (2008) categorizes it as Islamic resistance to Western imperialism. In either case, it seems clear that the assumption of religiosity, in the Geertzian (1966) sense, constitutes a determining element when defining what a Muslim is —or is not— and explains their attitudes towards LGBTQ (Rahman, 2014). The problem is particularly acute considering the urgent need to address LGBTQ phobia as a compendium of geographical, cultural, sociopolitical, economic and legislative factors that goes beyond the strictly religious question. Indeed, the current rejection towards LGBTQ based on traditionalist interpretations of Islam —'Islamicate LGBTQ phobia' in short— and the growing institutionalized repression against sexual and gender minorities in Islamicate nation-states are part of a problem with many elements that cannot be understood without addressing some issues. Firstly, the relationship between gender and sexual diversity in relation to the Islamic tradition is complex. The second question concerns the influence of colonialization and neocolonialization on the gradual transformation of the traditional forms of sex/gender diversity that developed in the historic lands of Islam, as well as on social perception and the legislation adopted regarding these forms in the aforementioned states. The emergence of sexual liberation movements in the United States and Europe in the 1970s entailed an ongoing process of homosexualization (Roscoe, 1997) through which contemporary globalized LGBTQ categories have spread around the world (Rao, 2015). When combined with the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and the emergence of Islamicate nation-states, this process has constituted a threat to the continuity of the traditional forms of sex/gender dissidence. This phenomenon would not have been possible without the construction of an invented tradition of Muslim homophobia that is being instrumentalized both in the West—through the disciplinary apparatus of nation-states—and in Muslim-majority countries—through certain forces linked to Islamic fundamentalism—with the common purpose of legitimizing control over the internal order of the societies of both frameworks (Rahman, 2015). The main objective of this article is to review the state of the art of Islam in LGBTQ globalization by looking at the specific historical forms in which knowledge linked to each of these two axes is constituted, as well as the social practices, forms of subjectivities and power relations inherent to such knowledge from the point of view of surveillance, control and banishment strategies. This exercise will be materialised through the analysis of the two hegemonic oppositional positions of Islam and gender and sexual diversity—one of Islamicate LGBTQ phobia and the other of queered Islamophobia—through which Muslims in general and LGBTQ Muslims in particular are subalternized, discriminated against and criminalized today both in the West and in Muslim-majority countries. To that end, the present article proposes a queer approach that aims to contributes to international studies—and the contemporary debates within them—in which LGBTQ issues in relation to Islamic tradition are largely missing. In this regard, while the connections between race, ethnicity, religion, religion, class, gender, sexuality, state and nation have been addressed by certain disciplines of the social sciences, there is still reluctance to take queer contributions into account and, even more so, to frame them within the umbrella of the recently named field of Queer International Relations (Weber, 2016). For the purpose of this work, and without wishing to provide here a specific definition of a queer approach, what is really at stake in any queer research is not so much a specific methodological proposal, but rather a substantial political commitment to place gender and sexuality at the forefront of social science analysis, challenging, in so doing, the hegemonic orders denounced in their research. The queer approach is understood here, therefore, in the sense of moral and political commitment and counter-hegemonic denunciation, rather than in terms of disloyalty to conventional academic methods to which certain queer theorists refer. The article is structured in four sections: introduction, theoretical-methodological approach, discussion and conclusions. The introductory section clarifies from a critical anthropological perspective the relevance of the reconceptualization of religion as a category of analysis when approaching the study of Islam. The section on theoretical and methodological approach reflects on the implications of putting queer studies and international relations in conversation. The first discussion heading, focusing on Islamicate LGBTQ phobia, reflects on the relationship between sexual and gender dissidences, Islamic tradition and Muslim identity, as well as on the influence of colonization and neo-colonization on the current state of these dissidence within Muslim-majority countries. The second discussion heading, dealing with queered Islamophobia, delves into the framework of homonationalism and the consolidation of LGBTQ as a requirement for access to citizenship and as a civilizational marker of Muslim otherness. Finally, I present some brief conclusions and outline some possible future lines of research.
