How to explain variations in the level of donation in comparable countries? In all industrialized countries, the economic crisis of the 1980s encouraged the search for alternatives to the welfare state by encouraging third sector organizations to play a greater role in a partnership for the definition and implementation of public policies.Among Third sector organizations, philanthropic foundations provide a legal framework that allows people who wish to carry out acts of generosity by allocating a part of their personal wealth in the form of gift, for the purpose of general interest. Giving can be considered as a concrete expression of the cooperation between citizens for the common good.All democratic countries try to promote giving. The conventional explanations of the variation in level of gift among developed countries do not consider the gift as a social fact. We argue that the level of giving can't be explained by the sum of individual gifts that each respond to personal motives but by the state of the society whose cohesion is determined to both by the presence of social capital and the representation of identities.Social capital can be understood as " relationships, networks and norms that facilitate collective action." Social capital refers to relations that individuals establish them in social networks and the norms of reciprocity that arise from these relationships.This thesis is focused, first, on the level of social capital in economically developed countries and secondly on the meaning of the gift as a mode of representation of identity. It helps define social capital theory by highlighting the close relationship that unites the concept of the gift and hence the construction of identities.This analysis of the relationship between gift, identity ans social capital has direct implications for research in the field of civil society. These organizations and entreprises mix in their actions a plurality of economic logics.Based on the analysis of Polanyi on the embedding of the economy and its various forms of integration, associated with the Maussian logic of the gift, we try to shed light on the socio-economic dimension, or political dimension, of social economy. Social economy can be seen as a "gift economy", understood as a plural economy.Finally, the New Economic Sociology offers both an analysis of the reticular economy based on the presence and density of interpersonal ties and a cultural analysis of the economy that connects markets to values. It is possible to understand the social economy as a "social capital economy". Social capital is understood as an organizational factor and a meaning. ; Comment expliquer les variations du niveau de don dans des pays comparables ? Dans tous les pays industrialisés, la crise économique des années 1980 a favorisé la recherche d'alternatives à l'État providence en incitant les organismes du Tiers secteur à jouer un rôle accru dans un partenariat pour la définition et la mise en œuvre des politiques publiques. Parmi les organisations du Tiers secteur, les fondations philanthropiques offrent un cadre juridique qui permet aux personnes qui le souhaitent de réaliser des actes de générosité en affectant une partie de leur fortune personnelle, sous forme de don, à des fins d'intérêt général. Le don peut être ainsi considéré comme une expression concrète de la coopération entre les citoyens en vue du bien commun. Tous les pays démocratiques essaient d'en favoriser le développement. Les explications classiques de la variation de niveau du don entre pays développés ne prennent pas en considération le don comme un fait social. Nous soutenons que le niveau du don dans une société ne peut être expliqué par la somme des dons individuels qui répondent chacun à des motivations personnelles mais bien par ce qui constitue son substrat social : l'état de la société dont la cohésion est déterminée à la fois par la présence de capital social et la représentation des identités. A la différence du capital humain qui regroupe les compétences, les qualifications et les connaissances des individus, le capital social peut être compris comme « l'ensemble des relations, des réseaux et des normes qui facilitent l'action collective ». Le capital social fait ainsi référence aux relations que les individus établissent entre eux au sein des réseaux sociaux ainsi qu'aux normes de réciprocité qui naissent de ces relations. L'hypothèse du don comme variable dépendante de l'état de cohésion sociale ouvre la voie à cette recherche doctorale axée d'une part sur le niveau de capital social dans les pays économiquement développés et d'autre part, sur la signification du don comme mode de représentation de l'identité. Elle contribue à définir les contours théoriques du capital social en mettant en évidence les liens étroits qui unit ce concept au don et par là, à la construction des identités. Cette analyse de la relation entre don, capital social et identité a des implications directes pour la recherche dans le champ de la société civile. La société civile est présentée sous deux perspectives différentes. La première, de tradition nord-américaine, associe le Tiers secteur à la condition exclusive du « non profit». La seconde perspective, de tradition européenne, retient l'idée d'une économie sociale hybride composée d'entreprises et organisations qui relèvent à la fois des secteurs marchand et non marchand. Ces entreprises et organisations de l'économie sociale sont des structures entremêlant dans leurs actions une pluralité de logiques économiques. En se fondant sur l'analyse de Polanyi sur l'encastrement de l'économie et ses différentes formes d'intégration, associée à la logique maussienne du don, nous tentons d'éclairer la dimension socioéconomique, voire politique des initiatives de l'économie sociale. L'économie sociale peut ainsi être appréhendée comme une « économie du don », comprise comme économie plurielle. Par ailleurs, la Nouvelle sociologie économique propose à la fois une analyse réticulaire de l'économie qui se fonde entre autre sur la présence et la densité des liens interpersonnels et une analyse culturelle de l'économie qui relie les marchés aux valeurs. A partir de là, il devient possible d'appréhender l'économie sociale comme une « économie du capital social », entendu comme facteur organisationnel et générateur de sens.

Even today, before its effective European integration, Romania still witnesses strong diversity refusal at the general public level. This research paper deals with the Romanian majority representations of two of the most visible ethnic minorities in Romania -Hungarians and Gypsies- and pays attention to significant attitudes of discrimination and intolerance. Moreover, it examines some of the most important factors for ethnic tolerance. The social capital theory sets that participation in secondary organizations is a certain source for civic values, social trust and positive norms of reciprocity, commitment, honesty, tolerance and mutual respect. But in Romania the effects of participation are weaker than expected in this respect. The most important factors for tolerance are ethnic contact and -especially for the Gypsies- the spread of ethnic prejudices. Even education appears less important, a possible solution for the future development of ethnic tolerance is multicultural education, which offers the chance of a contact between still separated ethnic cultures in Romania.

This thesis focuses on the analysis of the systemic change in the Republic of Moldova. It uses the issue of social capital from Pierre Bourdieu's perspective on the concept to analyze the diversity of strategies and paths of "intellectuals" - defined as such in Moldovan society of Soviet type by holding university diplomas and being non-manual workers - in the post- socialism. Based on the results of two surveys, of questionnaire and of semi-structured interview, this work highlights the idea that this diversity may generate the particular features of post-socialist Moldovan capitalism. It breaks with teleological and universalist vision of a system to consider the issue taking its own specific institutional, historical, political, cultural characteristics. Adopting a socio-historical approach and combining different fields of social sciences, this thesis proposes a comparative overview of the path of these "intellectuals", from 1980 to 2000; a period that covers three specific regimes of accumulation: first, corresponding to the end of the traditional socialist system, second, to the reforming socialist system, and third, Moldovan post- socialist system. It shows that the tensions caused by the different regimes of allocation and distribution of resources can be regulated by the volume of social capital accumulated by individuals. Thus, the issue of social capital appears as central, and shows how the institutional dynamics and social action are articulated. ; Cette thèse porte sur l'analyse du changement systémique en République de Moldavie. Résumé Presque 8 ans après l'intervention internationale au Kosovo de 1999, celui-ci se retrouve face à la difficulté de construire un état démocratique durable, développant son économie et encourageant une société civile participative, suivant ainsi son agenda de démocratisation. Alors que la mission de l'ONU se prépare à partir, une mission sous contrôle de l'UE, l'EU Planning Team se prépare à prendre la relève. À partir de cette situation, il est pertinent de contribuer à la discussion actuelle sur la construction étatique et le développement du discours, particulièrement dans le cas du Kosovo en tant que nouveau pays. Cet article, qui s'appuiera sur la démocratisation et l'agenda de construction étatique, prendra en compte les prémisses du développement social à travers l'analyse du capital social, en examinant son potentiel comme un catalyseur qui, dans de tels contextes, pourrait amener de grands résultats. Cet article sera basé sur l'approche théorique de Robert Putnam et son concept de capital social. Se référant à la recherche empirique, Robert Putnam a développé les « instruments de Putnam » qui sont surtout connus comme un index élaboré de civicness qui inclut : la confiance, les normes de réciprocité, le réseau, le lien et la rencontre au Kosovo. En utilisant ces indicateurs, cet article explorera la dépendance causale que le rôle des réseaux d'engagement civique joue sur les autres aspects de la vie au Kosovo. La théorie de Putnam nous aidera à comprendre pourquoi le capital social, incarné dans les réseaux horizontaux de l'engagement civique, améliore les performances du politique ( polity ) et de l'économie plutôt que l'inverse. De plus, nous analyserons concrètement les rôles et activités de la société civile et les médias au Kosovo, et plus particulièrement leur engagement pour venir à bout des clivages sociaux qui sont toujours présents dans la société kosovare d'après guerre. À l'issue de cet article, nous montrerons que le potentiel pour un capital social dans le Kosovo actuel, bénéficiant de bonnes opportunités par la tradition civique actuelle, doit aussi faire face à un immense défi, celui d'une situation politique et économique compliquée. En conclusion nous verrons que la tentative de faciliter une société civile forte, capable de régénérer le capital social dans une situation d'après guerre doit prendre en compte la manière de la mettre aux normes avec les exigences de temps et de développement social/institutionnel. Cela nécessitera une analyse de l'engagement à long terme de l'UE.

Le projet SOCAMI met l'accent sur l'importance des liens sociaux dans les parcours d'intégration des jeunes migrants issus de pays tiers au Luxembourg. La jeunesse est une période riche en apprentissage où les identités sociales et les sentiments d'appartenance à un groupe social se développent. En ce sens, l'analyse du rôle des liens sociaux dans l'intégration des jeunes migrants est essentielle. En particulier, les liens que les jeunes migrants établissent avec des résidents de leur pays d'accueil peuvent perdurer dans le futur et doivent donc être considérés comme pertinents dans la formation de leurs relations sociales. Cependant, les jeunes migrants se retrouvent souvent dans des situations de vulnérabilité liées à une précarité de l'emploi ou plus largement à une marginalisation au sein de la société d'accueil. Ainsi, ce sont surtout les relations favorisées par des organisations de la jeunesse, gouvernementales ou non-gouvernementales, formelles ou informelles, qui jouent un rôle central dans la préparation des jeunes migrants à la vie adulte.Cette étude a pour objectif général de comprendre, d'étudier, d'expliquer et de formuler de manière scientifique le rôle du capital social dans l'intégration des jeunes migrants résidant au Luxembourg. ; The SOCAMI project focuses on the importance of social ties in the integration pathways of young migrants from third countries in Luxembourg. In this sense, the analysis of the role of social ties in the integration of young migrants is essential. In particular, the ties that young migrants establish with residents of their host country may endure in the future and should therefore be considered relevant in the formation of their social relationships. However, young migrants often find themselves in vulnerable situations linked to job insecurity or, more broadly, marginalisation within the host society. Thus, it is mainly the relationships fostered by youth organisations, governmental or non-governmental, formal or informal, that play a central role in the preparation of young migrants for adult life. The overall aim of this study is to understand, investigate, explain and scientifically formulate the role of social capital in the integration of young migrants residing in Luxembourg.

The article starts from the assumption that the production of junior governments in sub-central jurisdictions such as the department of the region is related both to the powers or resources that they receive from the central government and to the social capital which is available to them. A model is proposed in which both elements are considered as factors o f production. The second being able to move only slowly across levels of jurisdiction, the central government is itself unable to transfer rapidly powers or resources from one level to another without running the risk of an efficiency loss of the whole which it would find unacceptable in terms of electoral support. ; L'article part de l'hypothèse que la production de collectivités territoriales comme le département et la région dépend à la fois des compétences ou des ressources qui leur sont attribuées par l'Etat et du capital social accumulé dont elles peuvent disposer.
