The diversity of education in the madrasas contributed to different social groups' feelings of belonging to the Mamluk community as well as to the formation of identity awareness. This study aims to examine the ranks the civil elite of the Mamluk period held in various scholarly and bureaucratic positions and the contribution of the texts they produced to the development of a Mamluk identity. Contrary to previous processes, the Mamluk ulama displayed a more conscious understanding of the Mamluk identity in their texts about the history of the Mamluk state and power. This study discusses how the ulama, who obtained scholarly or bureaucratic ranks because of various relationship networks they formed, constructed a Mamluk identity in their historical texts.
This article aims to analyze the identity politics in Kosovo after the independence. It employs social constructivist approach to argue that the enmity between Albanians and the Serbs of Kosovo is not natural or primordial but socially constructed as a by-product of Albanian and Serbian national building processes. Considering nation and national identity as socially constructed and therefore a process never completed, the article claims that it is theoretically possible to construct an all embracing "Kosovar" identity in the post-independence Kosovo by emphasizing citizenship rather than ethnic or religious affinities by the new Kosovo state. However, as the independence period and its aftermath was analyzed, it was concluded that the successful formation of a Kosovar identity remains heavily dependent on the degree to which the newly established Kosovo state is able to apply constitutional principles such as supremacy of law and human rights indiscriminately to all its citizens.
; One of the most debated areas of political and social transformation in Turkey, which is within the modernization process, is the scope and characteristics of the national identity phenomenon. It was obvious that the focal point of the tensest debates over the identity of Ottomanism and Turkishness during the transition period from Ottomanism to the nation-state is the question of the construction of national identity. When it comes to the definition and characteristics of national identity, it was observed that the political ideologies in Turkey make definitions highlighting the characteristics of Turkishness, Islamism, and Westernism by making definitions and characterizations that would make the Muslim and non-Muslim communities other and foreign. While the priority and rank of the ethnic and cultural characteristics of the national identity in Turkey were changed by nineteenthcentury political ideologies, the content and interpretations of the ethnic and cultural characteristics of the Turkish identity were observed to differentiate. In the political parties of the Constitutional Era, there was a portrait of a sultan who became weakened with regard to his position and whose powers were intended to be limited by constitutional provisions. The decrease in loyalty and respect for the sultan is related to the expansion of the area of a secular legal order over time. In the process of building the Turkish National identity, the criticism of the traditional social structure, and also, a democratic structuring securing the political rights of the whole people were included in the political party programs. The efforts to ensure the loyalty of the people of different ethnicities and beliefs living in the Ottoman state to the state required the democratic principles and policies to become evident in the political party programs of that period. The transition of Turkish society, that forms the roots of modern Turkey and is a continuation of the Ottoman period Turkish society with regard to human factor, from Ottoman identity to Turkish identity, and main problems of political and social identity change constituted the subject of this study. The political party programs, regulations and statements of this period, the approaches regarding the concepts of Ottomanism, Islamism and Turkism in the media organs of political parties, and the priorities of identity politics were examined and evaluated in this study.
This research aims to evaluate the developments in the recent history of the social studies course in Turkey (1998-2022) through the curricula. Since 1998, 2005, and 2018 social studies curricula and literature studies were used as data sources, the research conducted with the document analysis method. The data were evaluated by the thematic analysis method. At the end of the research, it was determined that the 1998 curriculum, which was first prepared with a behavioral approach, did not fully reflect the understanding of contemporary social studies. Secondly, the 2005 curriculum, which was prepared with a constructivist approach, emphasized individual identity instead of social identity, unlike the curricula prepared until that time. Furthermore, the 2005 curriculum brought many innovations such as learning strands, sub-disciplines, skills, concepts, values, activity recommendations, and assessment and evaluation elements that did not exist in previous curricula. Moreover, while sub-disciplines, skills, concepts, and activity recommendations were not included in the 2018 curriculum, some values were removed and some new values were added instead. Finally, it has been seen that the 2018 curriculum includes various competencies and literacy, unlike the 2005 curriculum. Based on these results, it can be suggested that the 2018 curriculum be updated in more detail to guide teachers.
; Abstract ; This thesis titled "The Impact of Rising Islamophobia to the European Identity", aimed to explain the process of discord between Christian and Muslim identity by using constructionist approach. In this study, within the scope of dynamics that make up the perception of Islamophobia, how opposite identities formed and the effect of multicultural structure and multiculturalist policies to collective identity are examined. Since 1960's, EU countries which performed a successful economic and social development thanks to progress in the field of industry, began to need manpower to work in the factories. EU countries that allow migrants to come, even encourage them with a special programs during these years, at the end of 1990's they began to implement a strict border control policy and tried prevent immigrant to enter their countries. These policies were manifested in the form of xenophobia in public opinion in time and especially right-wing conservative parties used this problem in their propaganda. An important part of their propagandas were carried out over anti-Islam. This fact leads us to the following; for the construction of identity and culture, common sense of history and common social memory and traditions need to be kept constantly alive. For the formation of collective memory, the concept of "we" and "the other" can be kept alive, continuity conditions for inclusion and exclusion is very important. The various nation-states, different cultures and religions EU contained are just a few of the obstacles in the formation of collective identity or in the other words a supra-European identity. Instead of a common supra identity, a different concept not marginalizing cultures of different identities have been proposed: Multiculturalism. This concept which was developed within the framework of mutual understanding in the past wasn't sustained later and this lead to states respectively declared the collapse of concept. It's obvious not only internal differences but external dynamics has great effect on the failure of the multiculturalist structure. After the attacks of September 11, together with associating Islam with terrorism, Muslim identities in the EU was marginalized and began to be seen as an enemy. EU member states, although they hardened the border controls I recent years, they cannot interfere with smuggled immigrants. In fact, arrivals of immigrants to Europe in illegal way lead to this group is deprived of human rights and workers' right contracts. In fact, it is a condition that is not opposed by globalization and the capitalist economic system: cheap labor without assurance. However, this still didn't stop right-wings conservative parties to use migrants in their populist discourse and the rise of racism and nationalism.

; In this study, the identity and political perceptions of the students studying at university are measured. 54.2% of the participants were female and 45.8% were male. ; This article attempts to analyze how the conceptualizations of 'identity', 'difference', 'self' and 'other' that have gained a recent popularity in mainstream social sciences in the last decades have been understood by leading International Relations theories. Although the meta-theoretical gap in International Relations studies that had been realized after the end of Cold War cannot be completely fulfilled by these conceptualizations, it will be suggested that no valid International Relations theory can be developed and maintained without internalizing the identity matters as their initial assumptions. Concordantly, the particular events of September 11, 2001 that might be analyzed within the framework of identity will be brought to the fore for how identity matters should affect the International Relations theory-making. The ultimate purpose of this study is to demonstrate that what is needed today in the study of International Relations is not to demolish its conventional theories altogether, but is rather to show the necessity of their re-evaluation for their stereotypical identity perceptions, prejudice and bias, which break out clearly once they are deconstructed.
This paper argues that by portraying minority concerns primarily as cultural concerns and by discussing minority existence independently of capitalism, neoliberalism, feminism, environmentalism, globalization, and the distinction between the Right and the Left, the dominant discourse on ethno-cultural minorities, namely multiculturalism, may lead to the reduction of minority communities to cultural entities in the collective consciousness of the dominant majority. Such reductionism endangers minority existence by identifying the question of minorities with the question of culture to the point that minorities voicing their noncultural political concerns increasingly appear unintelligible, presumptuous, or even destructive to wider society. Against this background, the paper discusses why and how ethno-cultural minorities may find their collective identity in different, not necessarily ethno-cultural, political formations in the age of neoliberal globalism, such as anti-neoliberal, anti-globalist, cosmopolitan, environmentalist, anti-capitalist, feminist, radical democratic, republican, and anti-imperialist. This discussion is based on Ernesto Laclau's and Chantal Mouffe's understanding of hegemony and social antagonism.
; abstract ; Turkey and the European Union relations has always been in a bumpy character. The differences between Turks' perception of Europe and Europeans' perception of Turkey could be considered as the basis of this unstable and changeable process. Historically, these perceptive differences seem to have been built on the religious phenomena. The images of Christian Europe and Muslim Turkey as a result of identities and interests created jointly by religion-based collective ideas affected and also sharpened the interaction among these parties. The Europeanization transformation of Turkey within the period from the European Economic Community to the EU has brought many reforms in various fields like as social, judicial, economic and cultural. Despite all of these intensive and innovative transformation process, Turkey is still not a full member of the EU. Further concerns about the Islamic identity within the EU have ascended because of many factors, such as; changing security perceptions of the world conjucture after the Cold War period, rising negative image of İslamic civilization starting with the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks in 2001 and accepted as a new threat or as the other under the title of global terrorism, spreading Islamophobia rapidly throughout the world, and increasing Islamic fundamentalist terrorist attacks in Europe. On the other hand, Justice and Development Party which is the ruling power of Turkey since 2002 has affected ongoing relations between Turkey and the EU differently because of her Islamic conservatism and neo-Ottoman ideological roots. Therefore, it's more likely to assume that today's relations between Turkey and the EU become more interesting and paradoxical.
; According to the social constructivist theory in the field of international relations, identities determine interests, and interests determine foreign policy. It is therefore unsurprising that religious identity is an important factor in shaping the foreign policies of countries. The United States is a state of relatively recent formation whose population shares no common (ethic, religious or cultural) identity. For this reason, the US built a civil religion based on the Puritan doctrine. Civil religion, which effectively ensures unity and solidarity at every level of society and influences both the domestic and foreign policy of the United States, is parallel to the evangelical worldview. The origins and worldview of evangelicalism based on the Puritan belief have been very influential in the construction of American identity and, accordingly, in foreign policy formation. The evangelical identity and worldview influenced the US policy towards Israel, brought the Jewish people to a privileged position and found reflection in US-Israel relations. The aim of this study is to examine the role of religion, and in particular, in shaping American foreign policy. To accomplish this goal, the thesis study shall encompass four main topics. In the first part, the relationship between identity and foreign policy is analyzed from a social constructionist perspective. The second part will attempt to elaborate on the relationship between international relations and religion. The third part will clarify the infuence of religion on American identity and US foreign policy. In its final section, the study will then attempt to examine the effectiveness of Evangelicalism in American foreign policy and impacting the decision-making processes of presidents. Within this scope, religion is an effective element of American identity and foreign policy, and effectiveness of Evangelicalism (especially after the September 11 attacks) in US foreign policy is explicitly visible.
Hırvatistan AB üyeliğini hâlihazırda 2013 yılında elde etmiş olmasına rağmen, Sırbistan'ın bu üyeliği gerçekleştirme noktasında kat etmesi gereken daha çok yol vardır ; The European Union (EU) has formally initiated the vast majority of the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECS) into the Union and Western Balkans' remaining non-EU countries have became the new target of EU enlargement since 2004. The Union, however, has faced some difficulties in transferring its rules to non-member countries in Western Balkans by means of the EU political accession conditionality in comparison to Central and Eastern European Countries. Here are two questions to mind: 'Under what circumstances could the conditionality be effective?' and 'why does the EU conditionality play relatively limited role in the domestic politics of the Western Balkan states?' An "external incentive model" is adopted by Schimmelfennig and Sedelmeier (2004) to articulate the issue. This study addresses this contestation, arguing that the "external incentive model" is incapable of fully answering these questions and that national identity has a huge impact on the determination of the effectiveness of EU accession conditionality by focusing on the problems limiting this effectiveness in two Balkan states, namely Croatia and Serbia. The reasons why the paper has chosen Croatia and Serbia as case studies are that they are republics of former Yugoslavia and that they have shared war history in the 1990s, however act differently on the way to the European Union (Massari, 2010). Although Croatia has become a member of the Union, Serbia still has got a long way to go The European Union has utilised political conditionality as one of the most significant strategies to export its governance and to encourage non-member countries to obey the rules of the EU (Schimmelfennig and Sedelmeier, 2004). Political conditions, which are necessitated by the Union from the very beginning, can be described as a competitive party system, and free and fair elections. As for the essential political conditions of EU accession that the EU confirmed in 1993, which are also defined as the Copenhagen Criteria, they are the stability of democratic institutions, rule of law, liberal market economy, human rights and lastly the protection of minority rights (Bieber, 2013:2). The required political conditions are flexible. By which it means that some specific requirements could be added to the conditions. For instance, the UE required cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in the context of Western Balkans (Frerburh and Richter, 2010:269-71). Predominant studies select "external incentive model" to articulate the logic of EU conditionality and political conditions. This model is based on a rationalist cost-benefit calculation that assumes that states are regarded as rational actors, seeking to boost their interests (Schimmelfennig and Sedelmeier, 2004). The tool of conditionality is perhaps the most significant instrument that the EU external governance applies to force would-be member states to obey the rules of the EU. That is, the Union decides its instructions as conditions and would-be member states are expected or required to accept these conditions to receive rewards. Consequently, the target government would face three various pressures namely from the Union, domestic and international politics in return for EU external incentives (Trauner, 2011:8). It is therefore the credibility of the EU conditionality plays a key role in evaluating the pros and cons of EU rewards as opposed to domestic compliance (Schimmelfennig and Sedelmeier, 2004:663-7). This model is, however, unsuccessful in fully articulating why the EU political conditionality could perform better in states like Croatia than in states like Serbia in the context of Western Balkan despite the fact that the Union has provided these countries with rewards. At this point, national identity, as a constructivist variable, has a huge impact on the determination of the effectiveness of EU accession conditionality by focusing on the problems limiting this effectiveness in two Balkan states, namely Croatia and Serbia. National identity is the main theme that determines whether conditionality can be effective or not. Constructivists argue that wouldbe member states would acknowledge the influence of the Union by means of socialisation and persuasion processes. It is these processes internalizing identities with the help of domestic actors (Trauner, 2011). Considering the rules of the EU appropriate and compatible with political conditionality helps domestic actors to stick to given EU rules (Schimmelfennig et al., 2006:27-52). In this sense, national identity, as a filter actor, influences EU conditionality. It is, therefore, crucial to note that states, as social actors, often shape and reshape national identity when they face or interact with different social structures. The EU political conditionality has raised doubts about its effectiveness in the countries in question. This is because they had ethnic conflicts in 1990s that shaped their national identities. It is this historic background affecting the effectiveness of EU political conditionality in Croatia and Serbia in different lights. As a result, the European Union (EU) has formally initiated the vast majority of the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECS) into the Union and Western Balkans' remaining non-EU countries have become the new target of EU enlargement since 2004. The Union, however, has faced some difficulties in transferring its rules to nonmember countries in Western Balkans by means of the EU political accession conditionality in comparison to Central and Eastern European Countries. In this paper, it is argued that the "external incentive model" is incapable of fully explaining the issue in question and that national identity has a huge impact on the determination of the effectiveness of EU accession conditionality by focusing on the problems limiting this effectiveness in two Balkan states, namely Croatia and Serbia. The reasons why the paper has chosen Croatia and Serbia as case studies are that they are republics of former Yugoslavia and that they have shared war history in the 1990s, however act differently on the way to the European Union (Massari, 2010). Although Croatia has become a member of the Union, Serbia still has got a long way to go.Cooperation with the ICTY has been very sensitive issue in both Croatia and Serbia where these countries had to comply with it as a result of being tied to EU accession. The way in which the transformation of the EU rules, however, quite varied from one another. Croatian elites saw the cooperation with ICTY as indispensable part of EU accession and in line with Croatian respect of European organizations. Croatia met EU requirements. This is simply because the country was one of the European countries in which the rule of law is respected and obeyed. As far as Serbia is concerned, the cooperation with the ICTY was ensured by Serbian elites who felt forced and oppressed to do so. But they rejected the Hague tribunal. Even though they rejected it, a sense of obligation arising from the fear of being punished by the international community through the cancellation or postpone of EU talks took place regarding detaining suspects. This problematic issue resulted in different images of the EU in the eyes of these two countries. Serbia regards the European Union as a punisher and a superior force that inclined to in Serbia. This could be one of the reasons why there is distance between Belgrade and Brussels. As for Croatia, the image of Europe in the eyes of Croatian people is related to high democratic standards, liberty and civilization (Subotic, 2011:326-7). This could be one of the reasons why there is close cooperation between Croatia and the European Union. The rational incentive model is important for explaining the choice of would-be member states. It is crucial to clarify that this model is valid once the rules of the European Union are compatible with national identity of the would-be member states. Once the national identity of the target state is incompatible with the rules of the EU, it is fair to say that any material condition does not serve a very useful purpose. Therefore, national identity matters
WOS: 000461078400001 ; Citizenship education was influenced by fundamental changes that happened following the end of the Cold War in 1989. Traditional citizenship education aiming to build a monolithic national identity, disseminate an image of homogeneous society and transmit the knowledge of political system has evolved towards modern citizenship education characterised by an emphasis on human rights, democracy, the rule of law, respect for diversity and a concern to develop students' political participation skills. The transition to modern citizenship education in Turkey started with the pushing of international educational projects and is still underway. Drawing on critical discourse analysis, this study explores what kind of citizenship education the 2018 Social Studies Courses Programme of Study envisages. The study found that the new programme intensely reflects the characteristics of traditional citizenship education. Taking into account this study's findings might lead to more effective implementation of the programme and increase the success of future curriculum reforms.
According to the data of the Presidency of Migration Management (2021), the largest group of irregular migrants detected in Türkiye in 2021 were Afghans. The arrival of irregular migrants from Afghanistan to Türkiye alongside the Syrian refugees have caused a negatively charged reaction in Turkish society and from the main parties in the opposition. Based on this apparent reaction against the arrival of Afghan
refugees, the claim can be made that Afghans are now the new "other" category in Türkiye. We identify two hashtags used on Twitter to protest the arrival of Afghans, which are #sınırnamustur (border is honor) and #hudutnamustur (frontier is honor) having the same meaning in Turkish and are Trend Topics on Twitter. The purpose of this study is to examine the reason why there are two hashtags on Twitter to protest the arrival of Afghan immigrants, what the differences and similarities are between
the two in terms of how Afghans are defined and what kinds of hate speech they are subjected to. For this purpose, we applied Craswell's mixed model in this study using both content analysis and social network analysis techniques. The investigation results reveal that the hashtag #sınırnamustur is a manifestation of a political endeavor, asserting that Afghan refugees are associated with a 'security challenge'. In contrast, the hashtag #hudutnamustur represents a response from the general populace, embodying elements of cultural superiority.
