This is a broad ranging introduction to twenty-first-century anarchism which includes a wide array of theoretical approaches as well as a variety of empirical and geographical perspectives. The book demonstrates how the anarchist imagination has influenced the humanities and social sciences including anthropology, art, feminism, geography, international relations, political science, postcolonialism, and sociology. Drawing on a long historical narrative that encompasses the 'waves' of anarchist movements from the classical anarchists (1840s to 1940s), post-war wave of student, counter-cultural and workers' control anarchism of the 1960s and 1970s to the DIY politics and Temporary Autonomous Zones of the 1990s right up to the Occupy! Movement and beyond, the aim of this volume is to cover the humanities and the social sciences in an era of anarchist revival in academia. Anarchist philosophy and anarchistic methodologies have re-emerged in a range of disciplines from Organization Studies, to Law, to Political Economy to Political Theory and International Relations, and Anthropology to Cultural Studies. Anarchist approaches to freedom, democracy, ethics, violence, authority, punishment, homelessness, and the arbitration of justice have spawned a broad array of academic publications and research projects. But this volume remembers an older story, in other words, the continuous role of the anarchist imagination as muse, provocateur, goading adversary, and catalyst in the stimulation of research and creative activity in the humanities and social sciences from the middle of the nineteenth century to today. This work will be essential reading for scholars and students of anarchism, the humanities, and the social sciences.

This research analyzes the political process of the Coordination of Women, Children and Family of the OPIAC (Organization of the Indigenous Peoples of the Colombian Amazon) understanding it as part of the social movement of indigenous women in Colombia. For this purpose a qualitative documentary study was carried out and which prioritized the archiving of the Organization itself. The research worked from culturalist theories of social movements where the feminist epistemology and the keys of the Peace Research were transversal to this analytical exercise. Finally, it was possible to understand that amazonian indigenous women have employed repertoires of nonviolent action in which they are promoting different strategies to resist to war and to the structural violence. These strategies include the participation in the traditional institutional sphere, and also, in the autonomous scenarios of their own cultures where the ancestrality is claimed. On the other hand, political agendas put at the core the need to heal the wounds that violence has left in the body as in the soul, the recovery of the culture and the traditional knowledge leading to the praxis the "Living in a Good Way" proposal. ; La presente investigación analiza el proceso político de la Coordinación de Mujer, Niñez y Familia de la OPIAC (Organización de los Pueblos indígenas de la Amazonía Colombiana) entendiéndola como parte del movimiento social de mujeres indígenas en Colombia. Para ello se llevó a cabo un estudio cualitativo de tipo documental que priorizó el archivo de la propia Organización. Se trabajó a partir de las teorías culturalistas sobre los movimientos sociales en donde la epistemología feminista como las claves de la investigación para la paz fueron transversales al ejercicio analítico. Finalmente, fue posible entender que las mujeres indígenas amazónicas han empleado repertorios de acción noviolenta en los que vienen impulsando diferentes estrategias para resistir a la guerra como a la violencia estructural. Estas estrategias incluyen la participación en la esfera institucional tradicional y en escenarios autonómicos propios de sus culturas en los que se reivindica la ancestralidad. De otro lado, las agendas políticas ponen en el centro la necesidad de sanar las heridas que las violencias han dejado en el cuerpo como en el alma y la recuperación de la cultura, los saberes tradicionales llevando a la praxis la propuesta del Vivir Bien.

En este artículo se ofrece una interpretación comprensiva de la relación entre las principales organizaciones políticas de izquierda y el movimiento estudiantil-popular de 1968 en México como punto de inflexión. Primero, más allá de las visiones instrumentalistas, situamos las aportaciones que realizaron dichos organismos al movimiento y la participación empírica que tuvieron en él a fin de poder comprender su influencia directa. Segundo, de acuerdo con los resultados de su involucramiento, recuperamos los principales retos políticos que el movimiento planteó y la manera en que dichas organizaciones los abordaron en su práctica política subsecuente. Por eso descentramos la mirada de la guerrilla situándola en el conjunto de las expresiones de la izquierda. Establecemos así una línea de continuidad entre la izquierda anterior y posterior a 1968 bajo la tesis de que el fenómeno experimentado fue una recomposición y no propiamente una ruptura radical que diera nacimiento a la llamada nueva izquierda. Finalmente, pensamos que una reinterpretación del proceso en esta clave nos arroja pistas para la comprensión de la izquierda mexicana actual.

The subject is the social structure of a southern Somali community of about six thousand people, the Geledi, in the pre-colonial period; and the manner in which it has reacted to colonial and other modern influences. Part A deals with the pre-colonial situation. Section 1 deals with the historical background up to the nineteenth century, first giving the general geographic and ethnographic setting, to show what elements went to the making of this community, and then giving the Geledi's own account of their history and movement up to that time. Section 2 deals with the structure of the society during the nineteenth century. Successive chapters deal with the basic units and categories into which this community divided both itself and the others with which it was in contact; with their material culture; with economic life; with slavery, which is shown to have been at the foundation of the social order; with the political and legal structure; and with the conduct of war. The chapter on the 'sultanate' examines the politico-religious office of the Sheikh or Sultan as the focal point of the community, and how under successive occupants of this position, the Geledi became the dominant power in this part of Somalia. Part B deals with colonial and post-colonial influences. After an outline of the history of Somalia since 1889, with special reference to Geledi, the changes in society brought about by those events are described. The section on Afgoi in the nineteen-sixties deals with the developments in population, general culture, economic life, politics and law. A chapter describes the New Year customary 'stick fight', and considers the significance of this tradition in the life of Geledi. The concluding Section D siiminiiiaes the developments in this community, in its transition from an autonomous small polity to a part of a modern nation state. The old elite based on wealth, originally in slaves, was being replaced by a new one based on education; but the latter derived from the former, and the representatives of both cooperated together.

From Eastern Europe to South Africa to the Arab Spring, nonviolent action has proven capable of overthrowing autocratic regimes and bringing about revolutionary political change. How do dissidents come to embrace a nonviolent strategy in the first place? Why do others rule it out in favor of taking up arms? Despite a new wave of attention to the effectiveness and global impact of nonviolent movements, our understanding of their origins and trajectories remains limited. Drawing on cases from Nepal, Syria, India and South Africa, as well as global cross-national data, this book details the processes through which challenger organizations come to embrace or reject civil resistance as a means of capturing state power. It develops a relational theory, showing how the social ties that underpin challenger organizations shape their ability and willingness to attempt regime change using nonviolent means alone.

The corporate initiatives in social development in Gujarat indicates that the state with its long drawn traditions in entrepreneurship as well as philanthropic traditions, emanating from both harsh economic conditions as well as close links with religious and national movements, have given rise to a sustained contribution from the industrial/trading community for social development. In the process, it has also shown a definite shift from mainly 'charity' to developmental orientation. To a large extent, these have been prompted by a deep rooted understanding that economic prosperity of the few in the midst of sufferings of the large mass of the people, cannot be sustained unless it is greased with some kind of positive contribution towards people's development. This understanding has become sharper and more explicit in the recent period, especially in the context of environmental issues. The need therefore, is to widen this understanding and identify the specific role that the corporate sector "ought" to play in social development, rather than make "voluntary contribution at its free will, towards whatever it finds convenient to do for the society". This kind of a shift in perspective may necessitate simultaneous changes in the policy framework.

AbstractWe analyze social media activity during one of the largest protest mobilizations in US history to examine ideological asymmetries in the posting of news content. Using an unprecedented combination of four datasets (tracking offline protests, social media activity, web browsing, and the reliability of news sources), we show that there is no evidence of unreliable sources having any prominent visibility during the protest period, but we do identify asymmetries in the ideological slant of the sources shared on social media, with a clear bias towards right-leaning domains. These results support the "amplification of the right" thesis, which points to the structural conditions (social and technological) that lead to higher visibility of content with a partisan bent towards the right. Our findings provide evidence that right-leaning sources gain more visibility on social media and reveal that ideological asymmetries manifest themselves even in the context of movements with progressive goals.
