The article places the origins of Italian scientific historiography on Southern reactionary brigandage in the political and intellectual contexts after the two World Wars. In both postwar periods the need to rethink the structures of the Italian state inspired new research about the resistances to unification. Drawing on 19th-century literature and on Gramsci's thought, historians adopted a land paradigm, which led them to read the rural brigandage as a form of class struggle. Fostered by the debate on Hobsbawm's work on social banditry, between the 1970s and the 1990s new studies on brigandage showed its complexity and its relations with traditional rural criminality. The land paradigm thus proved to be too rigid. In recent years the rise of multidisciplinary research on civil wars, guerrilla and transnational armed volunteers induced a number of Italian and foreign scholars to turn again the attention to brigandage, the understanding of which, consequently, is deeply changing.

In aeronautical constructions, fatigue is an issue of great concern. Laser Shock Peening is an innovative technology which promises considerable improvements to the development of a residual stress field capable of mitigative fatigue induced failures. The process has been successfully used in military applications for compressor and fan blades and for primary structures and is being introduced in the commercial aviation. The physical principles of the Laser Shock Peening, such as the Plasma Generation and the Shock Waves propagation, are reviewed and the cost/benefits of the technology are discussed. In order to investigate the influence of Laser Shock Peening on fatigue life of thick components, a test campaign was carried out by the author within EADS - Innovation Works Deutschland; the test campaign brought out that the Laser Shock Peening is capable of sensitive fatigue strength enhancements. Some unexpected failures occurred during the experimental activities. In order to investigate this unforeseen behavior, numerical simulations by means of the finite element method were carried out by the author at the Department of Aerospace Engineering of University of Pisa regarding the specimens involved in the test campaign. The simulations highlighted a modification of the stress field in Laser Shock Peened specimens which explains the unexpected failures.
The financial crisis affecting European Monetary Union (EMU) since late 2008 led to the deterioration of credit quality of several countries in the Eurozone. The thesis explores both financial and macroeconomic issues of such debt crisis. The goal is to infer a cross-country sovereign risk measure in order to monitor and anticipate perilous recessive spirals which might lead to default. In the first part, results on risk-neutral pricing of defaultable claims are applied to government bonds, so that idiosyncratic risk premia decompositions are available for any EMU country. The sovereign risk portion is detachable with the use of standardized Credit Default Swaps (CDS) contracts. Dynamic term structures of hedging portfolios are coherently retrievable in this new standard market, bringing forth a set of default-free sovereign term structures. A comparison of these latter to money-market rates induces an alternative definition of the CDS-bond basis. The determinants of synthetic-cash credit market arbitrage opportunities are to be investigated within a full macro-financial environment. This motivates the second part of this work. The well-known prociclicality of the banking sector in real business cycle plays a central role in the exacerbation of economic crises. In this sense, credit crunch and increase in global risk aversion of investors may induce both safe-haven (liquidity floods) and default (liquidity dries-up) phenomena, attributable to shifts in sovereign debt demand curves. The aim becomes thus to construct a dynamic score which allows to detect the 'point of no return', beyond which target country cannot increase its debt level whatever the premium provided in yields, because of a lack of investors willing to buy it. A pure econometric approach is unsatisfacory, so the analysis evolves with the economic backdrop provided by the analysis of Ponzi borrowing schemes. Positive growth rates of debt-to-gdp ratios evaluated at market yields induce a dynamic scoring which can be compared to risk-neutral hazard rates, and be used to compute a physical default metric. Cointegration analysis shows long-run equilibria between the two default probability measures in non-core countries. This proves that both macroeconomic and financial conditions pace a common long-term path as instructed by the joint macro-financial situation of target distressed country.
Some twenty years ago, the National Library Conference, held at Rome in 1979, called for the creation of a "national library service" (Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale, SBN). The Conference was urged by the Italian Library Association (AIB) as an occasion for reflecting on the lack of coordination between the central government and the regional governments engendered by the 1972 Presidential Decree which decentralised powers regarding libraries. The period which has passed is sufficiently long to draw up a critical balance sheet. In truth, after the enthusiasm and hopes of the initial years, the SBN was periodically the object of, generally negative, balance sheets, and the strong delusion led to the project being blamed for the shortcomings and negative elements which instead belonged to Italy's library services as a whole. The author appraises the project's problems in a constructive spirit. The paper first analyses the aims of the SBN project, the players, automation as a tool of cooperation and the project's decisional structures, and then examines the project's prospects. In some aspects, the SBN should return to its origins, to that nucleus of sound values which in 1979 induced the link between the nascent idea of a "national library service" to Italy's need to equip itself with an information access structure "for the lifelong education of its citizens". In short, it should revert to its initial focus on serving the citizen. The citizen rather than the user. The citizen who has the right to access all information and knowledge; the citizen who does not distinguish libraries according to their governing bodies or size, but who has the right to access the services of a national infrastructure from all corners of Italy. From this perspective, there is perhaps no longer any sense in speaking of the SBN as a national "library" network. The library profession should embrace the concept of "network for the access to knowledge and education", which includes not only the library services, but entails participation by all the players involved in the cognitive processes: libraries, information services of various types, publishers, schools, universities and training organizations. We should be aware that we have to manage a sort of "distributed database of knowledge". From this perspective, the SBN cannot merely be synonymous with library automation. It should be independent from any software package as the citizen has the right to access services of a national infrastructure independent of the library automation system chosen by the local authorities. The entire SBN technical documentation should be made available to allow all interested players, perhaps gradually and within a precise framework of rules, to develop software applications in a regime of competition. The local bodies would thus be able to choose the best quality product at market prices and following a regular call for tenders, with considerable savings as regards maintenance, assistance and management costs. In this context, the development of the software and definition of the services should take place within the framework of the functional standards and specifications defined by the library services. In accordance with this formulation, the national and local services envisaged within the ambit of the SBN should be more precisely defined. We should define the levels of participation in the services, including libraries or library systems interested in copy cataloguing and not only in shared cataloguing, as well as new ways of enriching the national catalogue. Furthermore, the question of the circulation of documents should be resolved, by eliminating the bureaucratic obstacles which have hampered it and adopting the relevant standards so as to allow ILL transactions with other systems.
; This paper deals with political and moral farces and comedies performed during the meals of Florentine Signoria, at the beginning of 16th century, in order both to offer an amusement to their members, and to communicate political, ethical and moral messages related to the current situation and needs. Through the analysis of some plays and their authors, the author aims to underline how this type of dramaturgy was utterly peculiar to Florentine culture inasmuch as, in its structure and contents, it derived both from the mingling of sacra rappresentazione (sacred play) with classical comedy, and from the performative tradition of heralds and street singers. The originality of this contribution consists mainly in having introduced the concept of 'civic performance' within a wider investigation of the relationship between theater and politics in the Renaissance. This link would, in itself, be taken for granted, given the economic and relational implications that theatrical production involves. However, it acquires new importance if investigated in relation to the constant change in political balance, and its related communication and propaganda needs, that induced the Florentine ruling classes: 1- to recognize to the heralds and other entertainment specialists the role of civic 'political voices'; 2- to solicit the production of dramaturgical and recitative compositions (from street singers' gnomic poetry, to sacra rappresentazione, to farce, to classical comedy) of which the typological variety fulfilled exactly temporary communication needs. These texts are interesting not only for their relevance in local history, although they are intrinsically linked to it, but also because they allow us to understand and more efficiently reconstruct some basic mechanisms of political communication, practiced through oral and / or theatrical performance.
; he analysis for the selection of corporate investment mark one of the most critical moments in the life of every business as it is about choices of durable use of available capital in projects relevant to the company and that, usually, will condition for the periods not short. In the financial perspective, the investments are written down to the financial needs they generate, the expected cash flows and the possible changes in the levels of risk business: ultimately, every investment interests for the positive contribution to the business value. Valuation errors in the analysis of investment projects can even be fatal for the company: in case of failure of a project, the resources used are not easily recoverable. The selection of corporate investment, concern the renewal or acquisition of new assets, industrial, commercial or administrative, must always be in accordance with criteria and models of financial evaluation. The financial plans of the company disclosed to the market have already established the coordinates within which the financial management must move (expected return proportional to the risks listed by the markets, planning horizon and capital deployment, asset structure and financial structure equilibria and financial maximum). In this framework, the capital budgeting leads to operational decisions (non-strategic) and aims for a rational use of capital that is or will be available as part of the expected results already weighted and risk premiums consistent. Despite the constraints seem stringent, the activity contributes to the creation of business value when, in the same conditions, you can not find a specific investment solution: particularly convenient for saving resources that can generate than other productive combinations; requiring minor uses of capital; allowing you to generate more fertile cash flows due to the higher quality or productivity; able to contain the risks of using more than other solutions; with times of obsolescence prolonged than alternative technologies. Shed light on those specific aspects relevant families of indicators: indicators of efficiency; indicators of economic viability; life indicators recovery of disbursements; risk indicators. Following each type of benefit, and the respective indicator, the list of preferred investments - those between comparable and therefore alternative - seems to be very clear; But sometimes the signs are conflicting and every investment has several reasons preferable. Thus proceeding, the operational practice includes, in fact, the use of alternative valuation techniques of investment: we need to realize the importance of each suggestion. Only the net present value (NPV) is consistent with the fundamental objective of the investment policies: the maximization of the value of the firm. Although the election rules for the selection of investment projects within the capital budgeting, in certain specific cases, the net present value is inapplicable to estimate the value of the investment opportunity. Think of the investment required by the search for new products. In many cases it is not possible to estimate the probability of success of the research, and you can only think in extremes: the search will fail, and the use of capital will yield; consequently, the investment must have a financial value. Or will fail: thus will yield not happened, and the investment has no value. It is, therefore, of cases that require investments characterized by total uncertainty in the outcome; For this reason, they consider only the extreme cases eligible rationally. In risky investments discussed on the degree of success and investments have a value in relation to situations of partial success. In circumstances characterized by enhancement of capital invested by the employees any manifestation of specific events (contingency claims), the logic of real options seem to be useful for such situations is within the tools of capital budgeting analysis.
2010/2011 ; Since from the first Industrial Revolution, energy supply, which feeds human activities, has been characterized by consumption of fossil fuels such as coal, crude oil and gas. This supply model is heavely affected by a dramatic limitation, taht is the idea of feeding an infinite system (such as the human activities energy demand) with a finite (in terms of time) source - fossil fuels. Although this issue was already forecast in the early decades of the last century (e.g. G. Ciamician in The photochemistry of the Future, during The Ninth International Congress of Applied Chemistry - New York), it has been largely neglected until the first oil crisis in the 70s, when public eye become aware of the (social) issue coming from the oil dependence. The exponential growth of Earth population and the consequent increase of energy demand and the environmental and pollution issues that characterized last decades leaded large part of scientific and (marginally) politic community to focusing its endeavours to research of more efficient way of exploiting renewable sources and to the fillip of their usage. The main drawback, which affects the usage of renewable energies, is that the supply, whether it comes from the earth or the sun, is never constant. Day turns to night, winds die down and the geothermal heat from the crust of the earth, although seemingly constant, will eventually diminish. The capability of storing energy and release it on demand, therefore, plays a crucial role in the possibility of exploiting renewable energies. The main target of this PhD study is investigation and design of devices capable of collecting thermal energy. According to the idea of gathering the largest quantity of energy in the most efficient way, as storage strategies it has been decided to adopt the latent heat thermal storage method. Suitable materials for accomplishing this task are Phase Change Materials (PCMs); they are a class of materials capable of collecting and releasing a large amount of energy during melting and freezing process at a temperature that may be useful for anthropic activities, such as air heating&cooling, domestic hot water production, industrial processes and energy production. In this thesis in particular, the existence of a convergence point between the possibility to adopt nano-enhanced material into largely used devices (heat exchangers, boilers etc.) is explored. This research has been, therefore, performed focusing mainly onto two different aspects: the possibility of improving thermal properties (melting enthalpy) of PCMs by addiction of nano-enhancer materials and on the other hand design and development of systems which imply the usage of PCMs, eventually nano-doped. The structure of this thesis reflects the division of topics and every part represents one of these task: * in the first part, Phase Change Materials a general overview on the state of art of PCMs is presented. A brief description of strategies for thermal storage is discussed and a dissertation on different typologies of PCMs, main advantages and disadvantages coming from their usage is given. The discussion than continues analysing possible ways of modelling the thermal behaviour during melting or freezing process. Both the analytical and numerical approaches are treated; * in the second part, Nanotechnology and Phase Change Materials, dissertation on thermal variations induced by inclusion of carbon nano tubes is carried out. After a snapshot on the state of the art in the field of nano-doping of PCMs, procedures and results of four commercially available paraffin waxes doped with CNTs have been discussed; * in the third part, Design and Phase Change Materials, devices which exploit PCMs have been designed and (numerically) optimized. A panel heat exchanger, capable to accomplish requirements of modularity and short time heat release has been numerically studied and optimized by genetic algorithm; the possibility of using a nano-enhanced material has been explored. Then, a system for avoiding ice formation on pavement surface during winter time has been developed. PCM elements (pipes) embedded into asphalt concrete of road pavement have been modelled using a commercial FE code. 1D and 2D models have been used and coupled with weather data collected in Trieste during the first week of January 2009; * in the last part, Conclusions, final remarks and further developments are discussed. ; XXIV Ciclo ; 1982
This study aims to examine some of the historical and economic aspects of Bagni di Lucca, a spa town in the Media Valle del Serchio, without renouncing to offer a geographical synthesis of the territory. In particular, the point of view we have privileged concerns the local factories and their evolution in the second half of the 20th century, because of the prominent economic role they assumed, during the period considered and at least until the very early years of the 2000s, with respect to the traditional spa industry, which has inspired over time, and contrary to the productive events of the municipality, an appreciable literature. Bagni di Lucca currently presents itself as a "crystallised" territory, lingering melancholically in a memory of which it has become a protagonist and virtuous. In spite of the demographic and socio-economic stalemate in which it finds itself, it allows us to glimpse a local milieu of extraordinary richness, which, if properly understood and valued by the local players, could find new margins of growth and expression. The town, which in the first half of the 19th century reached the peak of its European fame, was an essential tourist destination for nobles, diplomats, intellectuals and rich bourgeoisie, not only for the renowned therapeutic virtues of its thermal mineral waters, but also because it was chosen as a summer residence by the princely court of Lucca and later by the grand ducal court. With the political unification of Tuscany, and the consequent withdrawal of the usual aristocratic visitors, the long and gradual decline of local tourism began, which, unable to modernise over time, relied on deteriorated and clearly obsolete accommodation facilities in the aftermath of the Second World War. The fragility of the economic balance of the centre, essentially determined by its monofunctional vocation (and aggravated, moreover, by the progressive state of abandonment in which agriculture, once a valuable supplementary activity, was found) induced the population to seek, through individual solutions, new sources of sustenance alternative to tourism, drawing on a varied humus of resources which, although formed in the shadow of the thermal economy, was historically well rooted and widespread in the territory. In particular, the basic activities that allowed the local economy to successfully relaunch itself, thanks to the introduction of new technologies and a new organisation of work, were the following: the manufacture of statuettes and plaster artefacts, the production of paper and cardboard, and finally the extraction of tannin from chestnut wood. Already at the beginning of the 1960s, an analysis of the social structure of the population of Bagni di Lucca highlighted a trend that in a very short time seemed to show an irreversible character: about 52% of the active population was represented by workers and labourers, in the context of an economic context increasingly oriented towards industry. Bagni di Lucca, which was transforming from an exclusive and elitist spa resort into a dynamic working-class town, was therefore able to successfully restructure its economy thanks to a skilful combination of tradition and modernity. Our study does not pretend to be exhaustive, nor does it attempt to measure itself in a strict sense against the specialist contents of the historical-economic and archaeological-industrial disciplines. Rather, its intention is to underline the anthropogeographical importance of certain productive activities which, rooted in the history, tradition and complex of environmental and human resources of the area examined, have undertaken, in a historical phase of economic growth, the path of adaptation to the times, building a bridge between a substratum of technical acquisitions and social customs consolidated by an ancient heritage, and new possibilities for updating and development. Alongside the spa industry (but above all, since the second post-war period, as an alternative to it), these industries have therefore acted as microeconomic factors of territorial identity, thanks also to which, by virtue of the work systems and values they have generated, we owe the varied richness of the local milieu.
; The aim of this study is the analysis of Neogene syntectonic basins developed in different positions above the Sicilian-Maghrebian orogen. The study of the basins in convergent setting and their filling, is one of the fundamental tools for understanding the ways in which the progressive structuring of a chain area occurs. In this work, Thrust Top Basin and Piggy Back Basin lying on the Sicilian fold and thrust belt, filled up with Serravallian to Messinian sediments, have been analysed in order to relate them to a genetic and stratigraphic-structural point of view in the Sicilian foreland basin system context. The study has been carried out in Central-Western and eastern Sicily in particular in the Polizzi Generosa, Resuttano and Catenanuova–Centuripe areas. In these areas from Oligocene to Miocene the building of the Sicilian fold and thrust belt has been accompanied by the development of a peripheral foreland basin system which migrated toward the Foreland. In particular, during the late Miocene (late Tortonian to early Messinian) a siliciclastic sedimentary wedge above the moving thrust sheets have been deposited. These basins are characterized by sedimentation of continental to open marine clastics and shallow-marine carbonates sediments, above an often deformed moving substrate. The basis of the work is a detailed geological mapping, performed at a 1:10.000 scale. The distinction between the main bodies mapped in the field, has been made on the lithological, sedimentological, stratigraphic features (such as depositional trend, lateral and vertical relationships among facies associations), palaeocurrents measurement and study of the imbricated clasts and pebble clusters. During the geological surveys, the main tectonic structures, have been identified, measured and plotted by stereonet diagrams. Detailed sedimentological log in key areas for the definition of the stratigraphic sequence and the main depositional environments have been measured. The measurement of these sections is accompanied by a collection of 45 samples for micropaleontological analysis. For the classification of each sedimentary basin, reference is made to the classifications proposed by Allen & Allen (1993) and DeCelles & Giles (1996). The classification of Miall (1978-1985) has been used for the classification and codification of terrigenous deposit. The late Miocene succession in the Polizzi area, shows a fining and deepening upward trend characterized by overlapping of conglomeratic, sandy and clayey lithofacies showing lateral heteropic relations. In the Polizzi area the late Tortonian-early Messinian sediments, belonging to Terravecchia Fm. overlay, in unconformity, the sandstones and sandy clays of the Castellana Sicula Fm. (late Serravallian-early Tortonian) or above the structured tectonic units of the chain in particular on Varicolored Clay (Cretaceous-early Eocene). The upper limit of Terravecchia Fm. is found locally and is represented by a unconformity surface covered by carbonates reef deposit pertaining to Baucina Fm. (late Tortonian–early Messinian) or by the Gessarenites pertaining to Pasquasia Fm. (late Messinian). The sequence ends with the Trubi (Zanclean). Inside the upper Miocene stratigraphic succession two areas are differentiated with different facies associations: the NW sector shows, starting from the bottom, polymittic conglomerates with reddish sandy matrix, with carbonatic, siliceous, crystalline clasts, arranged in tabular units, with a total thickness of about 20 m, related to an alluvial fan, which registers an average trend of paleocurrent from NNE to SSW. Upward there are medium- to coarse-grained sandstones, whit external lens geometry and 25 m thick, which decreases towards the south, arranged in well defined, planar-shaped, up to 1m-thick strata characterized by large scale cross bedding in the early part, which pass upward at swaley (SCS) and hummocky (HCS) cross stratification. These lithofacies have been related to a wave-dominated shoreface delta system which recorded an average trend of paleocurrent like conglomerates from NNE to SSW. The sequence ends with silty clays and clayey silts with planktonic fauna related to an offshore environment. In the eastern part of Polizzi basin, conglomerates arranged into units of metric thickness with external concave upward geometry can be recognized from the bottom, made up of reddish conglomerates, massive or poorly stratified, related to a braided river channels environments that showed a mean paleocurrent trend ranging from ENE to WSW. To follow, there are medium-coarse calcarenites with large amount of bivalves, arranged in metric layers alterning to medium-fine sandstones, forming clinoforms dipping towards W with 20° gradient. These facies can be attributed to a delta front environment. From the structural point of view the Polizzi basin is a syncline with NNE-SSW axis. The western limb is more inclined than the eastern limb, the first 35° dipping toward ENE whilst the second 25 °dipping toward SW. In this area there is a normal faults system, NE to SW trending and there is not evidence of syn- tectonics deposition. The stratigraphic succession in the Polizzi area is due to two main depositional systems: the first related to fan delta system (Galloway 1988), evolving in wave-dominated shoreface delta system (Howell et al., 2003); the second related to a river delta system converged inside the basin from two different way: the first from the N- NNE to S-SSW the second from ENE to WSW, from a source characterized by the active erosion of the Kabilo-Calabrides crystalline units and calcalkaline rocks coming from Tyrrhenian volcanic arc. The depositional mechanism that affected the western part of sector (grain flow), leads us to consider that the streams have been developed in a relatively short stretch, maintaining a steep gradient until the mouth to the receiver basin. The late-medium shoreface deposits are instead formed when there are sea level rise that changes the type of sedimentation, indeed starting to accumulate well sorted medium to coarse sands, with a large vertical development, that reduce their thickness laterally toward the basin and increase toward the land (river-dominated shoreface delta system). In the easternmost areas, instead, a braided river system has developed discharging sediments in the sea, gradually more sandy, advancing in a low-gradient delta, (river dominated delta system) from an easterly direction as shown by paleocurrent measures. By linking the different stratigraphic sections observed in the Polizzi Basin it is possible to see that the succession is "Transgressive" with a trend fining upward. The two areas, however, show a "regressive" trend because the alluvial facies are considered to be the result of river systems and /or alluvial fan progradation, induced by a progressive increase in the energy rivers. In the curve of relative sea level change these conditions occur during the development of lowstand systems tract. The characters and the depositional geometries described for the shoreface facies association (fining upward trend) are concordant with those typically associated with the development of the transgressive systems tract. The upper Miocene succession in the Resuttano area develops with a trend-coarsening and shallowing upward, in the lower part, and in the remaining part with a trend fining-deepining upward, characterized by the overlapping of sandy conglomeratic lithofacies and laterally clayey and calcareous, showing heteropic relations. In the Resuttano area the upper Tortonian- lower Messinian sediments, belonging to Terravecchia Fm. overlay in unconformity the sandstones and sandy clays of the Castellana Sicula Fm. (late Serravallian-early Tortonian) cropping out from Resuttano village to Cozzo Terravecchia or above the structured tectonic units of the chain in particular on Varicolored Clay (Cretaceous-early Eocene). The upper limit of Terravecchia Fm. is represented by an unconformity covered by carbonates reef deposits pertaining to Baucina Fm. (late Tortonian in this area) or by the "Calcare di Base" (late Messinian). The sequence ends with the Messinian evaporitic deposit. Inside the upper Miocene stratigraphic succession are differentiated, from NE to SW, ortoconglomeratic lithofacies, 10 m thick and tabular external shape, which alternate layers with 4m thickness of sandstone and calcarenite with high-angle cross-bedding with tabular external shape. These lithofacies are typical of braided river. The sedimentary structures like pebble clusters and imbricated pebbles recorded an average trend of paleocurrent from NW to SE. Towards the SW the lithofacies described above is made up of medium-to coarse sandstones, with external lens geometry and 20 m thickness, arranged in well defined, planar-shaped, up to 1m-thick strata characterized by large scale through cross bedding in the early part, which pass upward at, swaley (SCS) and hummocky (HCS) cross stratification with abundant bivalves. These lithofacies are related to a delta front which records an average trend of paleocurrent from NW to SE. All fine grain litotypes (mudstones, sandy clay and silt clay) with a decametric thickness, are included in a single facies association relating to a prodelta environment, cropping out in the central and southern Resuttano area. From the structural point of view the Resuttano basin is an incomplete syncline with NE-SW axis trend. The western limb is more inclined than the eastern limb. The structural elements are normal faults with NW-SE and NE-SW trend that displace the Messinian deposits and reverse fault with E-W and NE-SW trend that displace the Tortonian deposits. There is no trace of syn- tectonics deposition. The stratigraphic succession in the Resuttano area consists mainly of a depositional river delta system (Galloway, 1988) developed from SSW to NNE and from NE to SW. This area of sedimentation was fed by high-energy ephemeral streams, forming large alluvial plains crossed by not confined braided channels. The coarse deposits transported by rivers have formed a large Shelf Type delta system with low gradient. Some sector of this area, however, show a "regressive" trend because the alluvial facies are considered to be the result of river progradation systems, induced by a progressive increase in the energy rivers. In the curve of relative sea level change these conditions occur during the development of lowstand systems tract. The late part of the sequence constituted by sandstones with small channels fillings, suggests that after the first phase of lowering sea level and progradation, there has been an uplift phase, also confirmed by the level of marine clay located at the base of the conglomeratic body geometrically higher being the roof of the sandy facies. This part of the succession is developed with a "transgressive" trend with fining and deepening upward facies sequences. The stratal pattern described above for the braided facies (fining upward trend) is typically associated with the development of the transgressive systems tract. In the Catenanuova-Centuripe area the upper Tortonian- lower Messinian sediments, belonging to Terravecchia Fm. overlay in unconformity the Sicilide Unit and Numidian Flysch; the upper limit is represented by an unconformity surface covered by carbonates reef deposit pertaining to Messinian deposits, marly limestones and limestones of the Early Pliocene (Trubi) and calcarenitic facies pertaining to Centuripe Formation. Within this sequence olistostromes of "Argille Brecciate" are intercalated at various stratigraphic levels. The sequence shows a coarsening -shallowing upward trend. This area is generally constituted by two heteropic lithofacies: the one's, most widespread, consists of clayey marl and quartz sands, and the other is constituted by quartz sands with thick lenses of conglomerates with dishes spherical clasts, rounded, of sedimentary and crystalline nature. The conglomeratic lithofacies are 15m thick organized in layers (4 m thick) with external concave shape, inversely graded in the lower part, and chaotic in the upper part made up of medium to coarse sandy matrix which were formed in a braided channels environment. Along the Centuripe-Enna syncline and the Dittàino river valley prevails the sandy marl facies made up of alternating sandstones and marly clays with abundant quartz and glauconite, 20 m thick and inverse gradation. The different facies show significant variations in thickness that reflect a high diversity in sedimentary supply, due to the articulation of depositional environment which was made by floodplains produced by braided channels that discharged the sediments into the delta plain and created an delta/prodelta environment towards S, which recorded a paleocurrent from NE to SW. The basin in the area between Catenanuova Centuripe has a synform shape with EW trend and does not present a deformation brittle or ductile pattern very evident. It can be seen that this basin is the result of the moving chain front towards ESE, structural data confirm that these basins, set on the back of the main thrusts dipping toward N-NW, as shown by the growth geometry diverging towards N. Isoclinal folds with NE-SW axes and folds with NNE-SSW and ENE-WSW horizontal axis have been measured, which reflect the sense of orientation of chain fronts, sometimes eroded by the upper Miocene sequences. In this area, the depositional system, reconstructed according to the distribution of lithofacies, is made up of upper alluvial plain crossed by amalgamated channels, subject to frequent floods (river delta system, Galloway, 1988) and a distal alluvial plain characterized by distributary channels with coarse load sandy that gradually gave way to marine processes towards the area of the delta front/prodelta. By correlating the stratigraphic sections it is possible to see that the upper Miocene succession is "regressive" with a coarsening upward trend. The sequence of alluvial facies is considered to be the result of the fluvial systems progradation, induced by a progressive increase in the rivers energy. A similar situation may occur during the normal regression (Plint, 1988; Posamentier et al., 1992). In the curve of relative sea level change these conditions occur during the development of lowstand systems tract, as confirmed by the presence of sub-aerial erosion, probably, at the base of the alluvial deposits. From the data collected it can be concluded that the upper Miocene deposits in all areas studied lie, with angular unconformity relationship, above the Numidian Flysch and Sicilide Unit (late Cretaceous-Eocene/Oligocene–late Miocene) and above deposits belonging to the. Castellana Sicula Fm. (late Serravallian -early Tortonian). The Polizzi and Resuttano basins was filled and then deformed in response to deformation of the lowest structurally tectonic units of the Sicilian fold and thrust belt in response to a NW- SE contractional stress, during the late Tortonian, therefore these basins are pre- tectonic; formed between the first and the second event of the chain deformation (Avellone et al., 2010) while in the area between Centuripe and Catenanuova the basin is syntectonic. The presence of regressive facies sequences is prevalent, moving actual eastward, from Polizzi, to Catenanuova–Centuripe; the latter is the only regressive one. In the Western sector the Miocene succession is characterized by an incised valley, instead in the eastern sector it is characterized by a delta plain system. Moving from west to east the depositional systems are different, switching from wave-dominated delta systems and shoreface delta system (Western sector of Polizzi basin), to dominated delta system (Eastern sector of Polizzi basin, Resuttano basin and Catenanuova- Centuripe basin) probably related to the different physiography areas. According to what has been observed in individual basins the north-verging back thrust played an important role, after the deposition of the upper Miocene succession, for the deformation of the western basins. For the Catenanuova-Centuripe basin the divergent geometry indicates the possible activities of a north -verging thrust simultaneously with deposition.
Il primo capitolo è consacrato all'attore Nazione. ; This PhD dissertation proposes a geopolitical analysis of a centrasiatic transborder region, the Ferghana Valley, which is today divided between the Republics of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. A basis of the research, field trips spread over the past three years enabled the development of instruments such as border analysis, analytical cartography, qualitative interviews with experts and inhabitants, and bibliographical research in the Ferghana as well as the Uzbek capital city Tashkent – noticeably at the French Institute for Central Asian Studies (IFEAC). As a complement to the field trips in Central Asia, a research period in France permitted both a consolidation in geopolitical theory at the French Institute of Geopolitics (IFG) of the University of Paris 8-Vincennes, and additional bibliographical research at the French National Library (BNF). The topic of the research is hence the analysis of power rivalries between "territorial actors" over the "territorial stake" of the Fergana Valley, a fertile basin of strategical location within the larger geopolitical context of Central Asia. Always a stake disputed by various territorial actors over time, the Fergana Valley now experiences power rivalries from contemporaneous territorial actors first and foremost on the border and transborder levels. By doing so, the dissertation introduces a new actor in the classical geopolitical pattern of analysis: the cultural regionalism. The dissertation hence offers a detailed presentation of the cultural regionalism as well as an evaluation of its past and current importance. First focusing on the centrasiatic context and the peculiarities which stem from its borders, the introduction presents the "stake" Fergana and its economic and physical resources which explain its importance as a territory. A rapid summary of the theory of geopolitics follows, with the justification of the choice of the French Lacostian school as the theoretical frame of this work. The introduction closes on a first analysis of the Fergana as a space of border or frontier. The thesis is structured in two main parts. The first, more theoretical, analyses each of the three territorial actors which aim for power over the Fergana: the Nation, the Religion, and the Cultural Regionalism. The presentation of the actors, of their respective embodiments and of their manifestations within the ferganian territory is organised according to a conceptual rationale; events that occurred simultaneously are thus not considered following a chronological order, but separately, according to their respective relations with the actors evoked. The first chapter focuses on the actor Nation. By this word we understand not only the effective entity of the Nation-State, and its three embodiments (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan), but also the Nation as an ideology which acts upon the territory through nationalistic policies. The force of legitimation of the actor Nation did certainly not have a neutral role in the rise of this actor in the Ferganian landscape, a process which led the Nation to the top of the geopolitical actors' hierarchy in the region. This chapter also analyses the representations of the Fergana which are defined and implemented by the actor Nation since its birth in the 1920s. In fact, the Fergana valley first became a transborder region only in these years, through its integration to the Union of the Socialist Soviet Republics (USSR) and its partition between three of the five newly created Socialist Soviet Republics in Central Asia. In the 1990s, following the fall of the USSR and the independence of the three Republics, the borders which divided the Ferghana stopped being only internal, but became real and proper international borders. Among the main representations that this study looks at, a particular attention is devoted to the study of the national borders , their creation and their evolution. The chapter also looks at the relations between the different Nation-States, which form a unique actor when they rival against the other territorial actors – the Religion and the Cultural Regionalism –, but three well different ones when they rival among themselves. The second chapter concentrates upon the second territorial actor, the Religion. The Fergana valley is one of the most pious and practicing region of Central Asia, and the Islamic religion always played a major role in the society's administration and organization. The chapter proposes first an analysis of the religion's representations in the Fergana: the autochthonous sufism and its sacred geography within the Fergana valley ; the traditional Islam of the soviet times, which became a legal weapon used by Moscow to fight the sufi orthodoxy in the Fergana ; the recently appeared wahabbite fundamentalism, imported from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and the encounter it induced between the soviet muslims and the afghan mujaheddins. It is then examined how the different variations of the actor opposed themselves to the actor Nation, over the years, for the control over the power and the resources of the Fergana. We look at how the geopolitical rivalries vary dramatically from the soviet era to that of the independence. A special attention is devoted to the phenomenon of politization of the actor Religion and the way this led the Religion to endorse a role of protagonist in many of the Fergana's events. The third actor is the Cultural Regionalism. It is hereby referred to the geo-cultural identity of this regional entity, which persists in spite of nationalistic and religious pressures. In fact, as long as the Fergana has existed as a place, it has always constituted a geographical, political and social whole. Although its population has been characterized during the past centuries by high levels of multiethnicity and linguistic heterogeneity, this did not prevent the societal amalgamation of populations which always held multiethnicity as normality, and always attributed to each "group" a specific social role within the system Fergana. Be they of language and culture persian and sedentary, turk and sedentary or turk and nomadic, these populations always shared, each in its own social role, a common life within the region. This very phenomenon is the main characteristic of what we call the Cultural Regionalism of the Fergana. However, this equilibrium changes with the loss of political sovereignty of the region and the rise of nationalism under the soviet sovereignty. This chapter analyzes the main representation of the actor Cultural Regionalism over time, and how it took stand against the other territorial actors, especially the Nation. The second part of the dissertation as dedicated to the current manifestations of the territorial actors in the Fergana valley, particularly in its border zones. This part results from the interviews and field observation undertaken in Central Asia and the Fergana in 2007, 2009 and 2010. The first chapter analyzes the border of this region from a theoretical point of view, especially in the light of the geostrategical categories of "first line of defence" or "last line of defence". In the context of a transformation of the border from the soviet era to that of the independence, the second chapter explores the definition of the centrasiatic border, mainly through the analysis of border bureaucracy, control posts and documents required to cross the border. The chapter looks at themes connected to the commercial transborder relations : how the "three" Fergana still manage to interact despite growing border rigidity, which social relationships subsist today. The qualitative interviews led in the Fergana are a major source in this process of reviewing the difficulties of passage and communication within the valley, and of tracking the actual presence of the three geopolitical actors which play a major role in the border relations and conflicts. The third chapter focuses on the Ferganian urban centres: their history, the relations that the Ferganians have with them, et above all the internal and external representations of these centres in a now fully transborder region. The fourth chapter concentrates on the demographical evolutions of the Ferganian population. Up until then a land of immigration, the Fergana became a land of emigration following the independence and the materialization of the borders. The fifth chapter deals with the Ferganian infrastructures, especially the rail and road networks, and their relationship of reciprocal influence with the mutation of the borders in the region. The sixth chapter builds on the theoretical interrogations evoked in the introduction of the dissertation and develops a conclusive analysis of the Fergana of the borders nowadays. The conclusion of this research depicts the current Fergana, the relations between the different geopolitical actors and underscores the persistence of the actor Cultural Regionalism. It establishes the existence of tremendous changes in the region Fergana from various viewpoints: the Ferganian population has new frames of cultural, political and social reference whose importance increased dramatically ; new political forms and cultural structures influenced its self-image, its very identity: "russian, muslim, ferganian", then "soviet, uzbek (or tajik or kyrgyz), atheist, ferganian", finally "uzbek (or tajik or kyrgyz), secular, ferganian". However, although the territory, its borders and inhabitants changed, and despite the strong obstacles set by the actor Nation, the cultural regionalism succeeded in maintaining itself, by adapting to the new tendencies and ways of interpretation of the Fergana. The conclusion ends with the most recent events of the Fergana, the Andjian massacre in 2005 and the Osh clash in 2010, which are both analysed in the light of the geopolitical power rivalries which persist in the region. ; XXIII Ciclo
