Provides an overview of the use of survey methods in social movement research, focusing on comparative methods. Techniques of data collection & sampling are described & different types of comparative designs are examined, including comparisons of movements themselves & across different spatial & temporal locations; various cyclical dimensions of movements are also considered. Suggestions are provided for choosing the type of survey instrument, taking into consideration costs, response rates, nonresponse biases, substance, & timing. The article deals with the analysis of theory, methodology, and measuring of political participation. The author comparatively scrutinized theoretical problems of genesis, functions, role, and prognosis for the future of this phenomenon in the sociological theory in order to reveal distinguishing characteristics in the existing approaches. Thorough analysis and summarizing of various conceptions relative to political participation, as well as empirical research are offered for the study of transitional society. The definition of political participation, its structure, motivation, main forms and factors, models of stratification in modern conceptions have been comparatively analyzed and systematized as a methodological basis of empirical research. The author elaborated and tested an original approach to the assessment of political participation based on the Guttman one-dimensional continuity scale. Using this approach, the author has calculated the index of political participation (IPP) and constructed four-dimensional model of the political participation stratification in accordance with survey data.

Im britischen "Office for National Statistics" (ONS) wurden in den vergangenen zwei Jahren verschiedene Methoden zur Verbesserung der Erhebungsinstrumente bei Unternehmensbefragungen entwickelt und erprobt. Der vorliegende Beitrag berichtet über die Merkmale der Instrumente zur Datengewinnung bei Unternehmensumfragen im ONS, über Weiterentwicklungen und Verbesserungen sowie über die Rahmenbedingungen einer Bewertung der eingesetzten Erhebungsinstrumente. "In cross-cultural (and cross-national) survey research, the equivalence of survey questions rivals the importance of their reliability and validity. This paper presents a review of the multiple dimensions of equivalence that must be addressed when conducting comparative survey research. Available methodologies for establishing one or more forms of equivalence are also identified and the strengths and limitations of each approach are examined. It is concluded that multiple methodologies must be implemented in order to insure the cross-cultural equivalence of survey measures." (author's abstract)

Die Autorin stellt einige Forschungsansätze aus dem U.S. Census Bureau vor, die sich auf den Pretest von Umfragen und die Evaluation der eingesetzten Erhebungsinstrumente beziehen. Von den Mitarbeitern der "Statistical Research Division" (SRD) wurde im Jahr 1998 insbesondere vorgeschlagen, einen unabhängigen demographischen Haushaltssurvey einzurichten, der ausschließlich Forschungszwecken dienen sollte. Die Autorin berichtet von Erfahrungen mit diesem Umfrageprojekt aus den Jahren 1999 und 2000, das als "Questionnaire Design Experimental Research Survey" (QDERS) bezeichnet wird. Sie stellt die besonderen methodischen Leistungen des Projekts heraus und gibt einen Überblick über vorliegende Veröffentlichungen und Tagungsberichte. (ICI)

"Die spezielle Zielgruppe (türkeistämmige Migranten in Deutschland) wirkt maßgeblich auf die Wahl der Datenerhebungsmethode ein. Die telefonische Befragung ist hinsichtlich des Zeit- und Kostenumfangs der Arbeiten die günstigste Methode, sichert darüber hinaus aber auch die bessere Erreichbarkeit von Personengruppen, die mit schriftlichen Befragungen Schwierigkeiten hätten. Allerdings birgt auch sie Nachteile, die die Erreichbarkeit von mobilen Personengruppen sowie die Erfassung einer möglichst umfassenden Zahl von Haushalten betrifft. Darüber hinaus sind durch die telefonische Befragung die Themen ebenso wie die tiefe der Fragestellung beschränkt. Hauptproblem bei der (telefonischen) Befragung von Migranten ist die Erfassung der Grundgesamtheit, da ungefilterte Zufallsauswahlen von Telefonnummern bzw. Adressen mit hohen Fehlkontakten einher gehen und ein enormer finanzieller und zeitlicher Aufwand benötigt würde, um eine angemessene Zahl türkischer Haushalte zu erreichen. Die Stiftung Zentrum für Türkeistudien hat dafür ein spezielles Verfahren entwickelt, durch das anhand von Vor- und Familiennamen die Haushalte aus elektronischen Telefonverzeichnissen selektiert werden. Dadurch können schätzungsweise die Hälfte der türkeistämmigen Haushalte erfasst werden. Die Auswahl nach Namen gewährleistet, dass eine systematische Bevorzugung bzw. Benachteiligung bestimmter sozialer Gruppen ausgeschlossen werden kann. Durch die Namensauswahl werden auch Migranten erfasst, die die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft haben. Die Erfahrungen zeigen, dass muttersprachliche Interviewer und die Möglichkeit, das Interview auf Türkisch zu führen, die Bereitschaft zur Teilnahme deutlich erhöhen. Diese ist jedoch stark abhängig vom Thema der Befragung. Problematisch ist jedoch die Teilnahmebereitschaft von weiniger gebildeten Migranten. Gelegentlich entstehen Probleme bei der Definition 'türkisch'." (Autorenreferat)

Referiert werden die methodischen Grundlagen eines Forschungsprojektes zum Thema "Leitbilder der Stadtentwicklung", das von 1985 bis 1987 am Institut für Soziologie der Universität Karlsruhe (TH) durchgeführt wurde. Zunächst wird die Fragestellung vorgestellt. Daraus abgeleitet schien
eine Expertenbefragung als die geeignete Methode der Bearbeitung, bei der sich primär das Problem der Auswahl der Experten stellte. Grundlegend für die Gespräche und die weiteren Auswertungsschritte war ein Gesprächsleitfaden, dessen Konzeption beschrieben wird, ebenso wie die weiteren Schritte zur Gesprächsvorbereitung und -durchfuhrung. Drei verschiedene, aufeinander aufbauende Auswertungsphasen, jeweils mit einer Rückkoppelung zu den Experten sind die Besonderheit der Vorgehensweise und begründen die Überschrift "mehrstufige Expertenbefragung".

Considers some methodological issues surrounding attempts to compare racial & ethnic data collected in the 2000 decennial US census, the first to allow respondents the option of selecting more than one category to designate their racial identification, with data from previous censuses & other individual-level social surveys. "Bridging estimates" calculated to analyze historical trends in data series are reviewed, cautioning that they are not always useful, nor are they required. Criteria for choosing a bridging method are outlined, & the utility of different methods is demonstrated in a comparative analysis of data from three sources: the 1993-1995 National Health Interview Surveys, the May 1995 Supplement on Race & Ethnicity to the Current Population Survey, & the 1998 Washington State Population Survey. Reports procedures used to draw a sample of & collect data on a national probability sample of work establishments for the 1991 National Organizations Study, which surveyed 1,427 US organizations. Probability proportionate size sampling was employed, asking respondents to the General Social Survey to name the establishments for which they & their spouses work; 927 establishments were selected, & data were collected on the individual organizations. The final sample of 727 represents a statistically valid sample of all types, ages, & sizes of work organizations. Moreover, this methodological design has the added advantage of being flexibly adaptable to many variations & extensions that may be appropriate for different research needs. 6 Tables, 2 Figures, 1 Appendix. "Translation of questionnaires is the most frequently chosen route to implementing 'equivalent' instruments in cross-national and cross-lingual survey research. The article presents the framework of current survey translation practice: the various procedures proposed for translation and for assessment of translation products and the respective advantages or disadvantages of each. In doing so, pointers are made to research gaps in questionnaire adaptation and evaluation for cross-cultural work and to the need for interdisciplinary transfer from cognitive survey research, translation studies and statistical analysis in order to establish a thorough-going methodology of questionnaire adaptation, assessment and documentation."
