Surveys play a major role in studying social and behavioral phenomena that are difficult to observe. Survey data provide insights into the determinants and consequences of human behavior and social interactions. Many domains rely on high quality survey data for decision making and policy implementation including politics, health, business, and the social sciences. Given a certain research question in a specific context, finding the most appropriate survey design to ensure data quality and keep fieldwork costs low at the same time is a difficult task. The aim of examining survey research methodology is to provide the best evidence to estimate the costs and errors of different survey design options. The goal of this thesis is to support and optimize the accumulation and sustainable use of evidence in survey methodology in four steps: (1) Identifying the gaps in meta-analytic evidence in survey methodology by a systematic review of the existing evidence along the dimensions of a central framework in the field (2) Filling in these gaps with two meta-analyses in the field of survey methodology, one on response rates in psychological online surveys, the other on panel conditioning effects for sensitive items (3) Assessing the robustness and sufficiency of the results of the two meta-analyses (4) Proposing a publication format for the accumulation and dissemination of metaanalytic evidence ; Umfragen spielen eine wichtige Rolle bei der Untersuchung sozialer und verhaltensbezogener Phänomene, die sonst nur schwer zu beobachten sind. Umfragedaten geben Einblicke in die Determinanten und Folgen sozialer Interaktionen und menschlichen Verhaltens. Daher ist die Qualität von Umfragedaten für viele Bereiche und Entscheidungssituationen von hoher Relevanz, unter anderem in der Politik, dem Gesundheitsweisen, der Wirtschaft, sowie der Wissenschaft. Angesichts einer bestimmten Forschungsfrage in einem spezifischen Kontext ist es eine schwierige Aufgabe, das am besten geeignete Erhebungsdesign zu identifizieren, um hohe Datenqualität bei gleichzeitig niedrigen Erhebungskosten zu gewährleisten. Ziel der Untersuchung von Umfragemethoden ist es, die beste Evidenz zur Abschätzung der Kosten und Fehler verschiedener Umfragedesign-Optionen zu liefern. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Akkumulation und nachhaltige Nutzung von Evidenz in der Umfragemethodik in vier Schritten zu unterstützen und zu optimieren: (1) Die Identifikation von Lücken in der meta-analytischen Evidenz durch eine systematische Aufarbeitung der vorhandenen Evidenz entlang zentraler Dimensionen in diesem Bereich (2) Beginn der Schließung dieser Lücken mit zwei Metaanalysen im Bereich der Erhebungsmethodik, eine zur Teilnahmebereitschaft in psychologischen Online- Umfragen, die andere zu Panel-Konditionierungseffekten bei sensiblen Items (3) Untersuchung der Robustheit und Suffizienz der Ergebnisse beider Meta-Analysen (4) Vorstellung eines Publikationsformates, um meta-analytische Evidenz zu sammeln und verfügbar zu machen

[From the Introductory paragraph] The Social Science Research Center (SSRC) at Old Dominion University recently completed data collection for the fifth annual Life in Hampton Roads telephone survey. The purpose of the survey was to gain insight into residents' perceptions of the quality of life in Hampton Roads. The survey also attempted to determine the attitudes and perceptions of citizens regarding topics of local interest such as transportation and traffic, local and state government, crime, education, and other issues. Funding for the 2014 survey was provided by the Social Science Research Center.

This paper provides background information and basic descriptive statistics for a representative survey of the New Zealand population conducted on our behalf by Research New Zealand in May 2016. The survey addresses important fiscal and monetary policy issues, including: (1) public preferences for public debt and fiscal consolidation; (2) awareness of the government's Fiscal Strategy Report; (3) citizens' monitoring of and reaction to inflation and their inflation expectation formation; (4) knowledge and support for the Policy Target Agreement between the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the government; (5) trust in economic institutions; and (6) indicators for (macro)economic literacy, that is, objective and subjective knowledge about variables and institutions relevant for macroeconomic policy.

BACKGROUND: The Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) is an Australian state-based government agency with a remit to promote health by targeting physical activity, diet, mental wellbeing, tobacco use and alcohol consumption. Population health data is crucial to this work. This paper reports on the measures and methods used in surveillance, examines the prevalence of risk factors in sub-populations and use of risk factor data in local policy and planning. METHODS: The VicHealth Indicators (VHI) cross-sectional population telephone survey of behavioural and attitudinal health risk factors involved interviews with 22,819 respondents aged 18 years+ from the state of Victoria in 2015. Means or percent prevalences (with 95% CIs) of indicators are presented. Statistically significant differences between the state level and sub-population estimates were deemed to exist when confidence intervals of estimates did not overlap. Use of the data in local policy was assessed through an audit of 77 Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plans for 2017–2021. Use in municipal plans according to the municipality's geographical region type and SES was analysed using Welch's ANOVA. RESULTS: The average vegetable intake was 2.2 serves per day, far below the national guidelines of 5 serves per day, and only 4 in 10 Victorians were sufficiently active. Young males were twice as likely to be at high risk of alcohol harm compared to the state estimate. Women were twice as likely to feel unsafe walking after dark compared to males. There was a consistent pattern of significantly less favourable results for people living in outer metropolitan areas and a socio-economic gradient was evident for most risk factors. Almost 50% of municipalities used VHI data in their local policy plans. Use of VHI data was significantly higher in high SES municipalities and significantly lower in low SES municipalities relative to the mean. In autumn 2009, Professor Raimund Vogels (Hochschule für Theater und Musik de Hannover) and I set up a Franco-German workshop analysing Musiques du Monde festivals. With around 15 PhD students from different universities, we carried out a comparative study of the Creole Weltmusik aus Deutschland festival (Berlin) and the Villes des Musiques du Monde (Seine-Saint-Denis) festival. I set out here two difficulties with this survey: one methodology, the other ontological. I favour two points of view, that of the researchers who are investigating and that of the cultural operators planning. This article does not seek to meet the ideal of completeness that makes many of the description operations ambitious. Here, the description test is reduced, depending on the Goodmanian non-exceedable objection, to a depiction test: we disagree with what we have learned in advance (Goodman, 1992: 11 et seq.). This article would like to contribute to a hermeneutical theory of festival analysis. Paper submitted to the Sixth International Conference on Social Science Methodology, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, August 16-20, 2004. ; ESS is, probably, one of the most significant efforts to improve social survey methodology. No doubt, the "best practices" spirit aims it. In that sense, to put at work extensively the manuals of social survey methodology may be considered a qualitative jump in quantitative. Certainly, offer an optimal starting point to excellence. This paper point out some translations problems that emerges for construct comparability. Even with the right questionnaire design or the best translation procedures. As example, the concept of government will be used. It gives no problems tested by interaction analysis. The main reason is the Enthymeme effect. This rhetoric mechanism affect the visibility of this kind of troubles. At the same time, shows the limitations of testing and choosing items for measurement in a one-country base. The "intervention of the government in the economy" is not a "content" that can be employed cross-culturally to compare "left-right" ideological dimensions.

The PiMA Working Papers are a series of peer-reviewed working papers that present findings and insights from Centre of Governance and Human Rights' (CGHR) Politics and Interactive Media in Africa (PiMA) research project (2012-14). The project, jointly funded by the ESRC and DFID, focuses on expressions of 'public opinion' in broadcast media via new information and communication technologies (ICT) such as mobile phones in Kenya and Zambia. PiMA examines the political implications of such interactions in the two African countries, with a view to drawing conclusions of wider significance to practitioners and policymakers. Series Editors: Sharath Srinivasan, Stephanie Diepeveen ; The Politics and Interactive Media in Africa (PiMA) project investigates participation in radio and television programmes through new information and communication technologies (ICTs) as it is shaped by the political, social and media context in Zambia and Kenya, as well as the implications of such interactions for democratic governance and poverty alleviation. The empirical research combines different methodologies, including interviews with key informants, focus groups with audience members, in-studio observations and surveys of the general population. This paper describes the methodology for conducting surveys in four sites in Kenya and Zambia. The objective of the surveys was to obtain representative samples of two constituencies per country. Constituencies were selected according to their social and economic characteristics, in order to capture a wide variety of contexts. A random procedure was deployed in all stages of sampling, ensuring representativity of households and individuals of voting age in the four constituencies. The results of the survey can be generalised to the particular constituencies with a margin of error of approximately minus or plus 5% for a 95% confidence interval. ; The project was jointly funded by the ESRC and DFID.

The year 2019 marks the tenth year of the Right to Information (RTI) act enactment in Bangladesh. The Government of Bangladesh (GoB) has made good progress in implementing the RTI Act 2009 in the past decade. The RTI survey was conducted between January and March of 2019. The survey results reveal that the contribution of the RIT Act 2009 has overall been positive in the last decade. Especially, notable progress has taken place in making the supply side prepared in implementing the RTI Act. The survey will enable policymakers and RTI activists to identify and seal the pores and bring about the desired changes in perception, behavior, and actions of various stakeholders, including the citizens.

The scientific assessment of health issues, the design and further development of political guidelines as well as the targeted planning of measures in the European Union (EU) require data on population health. For this reason, all EU Member States regularly collect data on the health status, provision of healthcare, health determinants and socioeconomic situation of their respective populations in the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS). Participants are at least 15 years old and live in private households. The second wave of EHIS (EHIS 2) was conducted between 2013 and 2015. For EHIS 2, each EU Member State drew a nationally representative population sample from population registers, censuses, dwelling registers or other statistical or administrative sources. Data collection modes within individual EU Member States were used, according to nationally established methods, including the use of mixed-mode surveys. Across all EU Member States, data collection took an average of eight months to complete. Member States made considerable efforts to achieve the highest possible response rates. The harmonised EHIS data collected are highly comparable and constitute an important information base for European health policy and health reporting. ; Peer Reviewed

Background: Governments worldwide are balancing contrasting needs to curtail the toll that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) takes on lives and health care systems and to preserve their economies. To support decisions, data that simultaneously measure the health status of the population and the economic impact of COVID-19 mitigation strategies are needed. In the United States, prior to the onset of COVID-19, surveys or tracking systems usually focused on public health or economic indicators, but not both. However, tracking public health and economic measures together allow policy makers and epidemiologists to understand how policy and program decisions are associated. The Ohio COVID-19 Survey (OCS) attempts to track both measures in Ohio as one of the first statewide population surveys on COVID-19. To achieve this there are several methodological challenges which need to be overcome. Methods: The OCS utilizes a representative panel offering both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. It targets 700 to 1000 respondents per week for a total of 12 600 to 18 000 respondents over an 18-week period. Leveraging a sample of 24 000 adult Ohioans developed from a statewide population health survey conducted in fall 2019, the OCS produces weekly economic and health measures that can be compared to baseline measures obtained before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Results: The OCS was able to quickly launch and achieve high participation (45.2%) and retention across waves. Conclusion: The OCS demonstrates how it is possible to leverage an existing health-based survey in Ohio to generate a panel which can be used to quickly track fast-breaking health issues like COVID-19.

We present in this Deliverable: a regulatory quadrant to describe the rule of law; a cluster of concepts to describe instruments and processes of the law; the methodology followed to select the technical papers concerning regulatory compliance; and an initial mapping to frame the selected papers about legal compliance that we will use in our final survey. The result is a conceptual clustering that is useful to analyse and differentiate compliance by (CbD) and through (CtD) design. This outcome is work in progress: it will evolve as the legal analysis is developed. Preliminary results have been also presented at Casanovas et al (2017), and Hashmi et al. (2018b). In 2004 Germany's Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt, Destatis) started the recruitment of an access panel (AP) from participantes in the German microcensus (MC), a large household survey. This access panel, a pool of persons willing to take part in voluntary surveys, currently serves as the sampling frame for the DE-SILC, the German subsample of the European Union Statistic on Income and Living Conditions. Sampling from panelists rather than directly from the population promised lower survey costs due to easy access to the AP participants and higher response rates. While participation in the MC is mandatory by law, joining the AP is voluntary. Approx. 10 percent of the MC households agree to enter the panel. In this work we examine the recruitment from the 2006 MC using socio-economic and demographic characteristics available in both the AP and the MC to explore the selectivity of the recruitment process. We also discuss the implications of German privacy protection legislation for this analysis. Finally we consider the longitudinal use of the AP in a methodological discussion on the question whether samples from the AP can be regarded as probability samples from the general population.

This research leveraged existing UN-Habitat instances of community profiling surveys (such as the survey being used in Fiji and partly deployed in Koa Hill), which were then refined for use in the Honiara context. The goal was to design a survey that is both quick and effective, elicits information on critical issues of vulnerability to climate change and natural hazards, is fit for local purpose, and can be considered together with other sources of socio-economic information (e.g. collected by the national Census). It also attempted to leverage / integrate with existing Government geospatial datasets. The RMIT team also supported the implementation and analysis of the survey. It achieved this through identifying suitable enumerators (in consultation with SI Ministries and Honiara City Council) and sourcing appropriate technology platforms to collect and process the data, with a view toward interoperability with other datasets. The analysis of the data was conducted in Melbourne, providing a broad profile of the community that can be used as input into other components of the Climate Resilient Honiara project, as well as other climate-related decision-making.

In an attempt to explore the linkages between corruption surveys, underreporting corruption experiences and causes of reluctance to report corruption, this paper provides insight into solutions applied to mitigate the underreporting risks in surveying corruption experiences in Croatia. Based on the Survey on use of public services and public integrity in Croatia 2010, the issue of underreporting corruption is assessed with a two-fold approach. The study first discusses the survey methodology applied, where the main concerns were the willingness of respondents to report corruption and their perceptions regarding risk of personal data misuse. Potential reluctance to admit involvement in corruption as a criminal act might be driven by a fear of subsequent surveillance or investigation. Further, we investigate the concerns expressed by respondents regarding the misuse of data and about protecting anonymity. Survey data were used to analyze citizens' attitudes and reasons for (not) reporting crime to official institutions. The analysis focuses on reporting corruption experiences, both formally and informally. The findings show a very high level of citizens' opportunism and lack of public trust in institutions that might impede anti-corruption efforts in Croatia. ; Rad polazi od dosadašnje literature o anketama o korupciji, metodološkom problemu odbijanja odgovora o stvarnim iskustvima korupcije te o potencijalnim uzrocima neprijavljivanja korupcije. Studija opisuje konkretnu problematiku u anketnom ispitivanju korupcije i primijenjena rješenja kako bi se smanjio rizik davanja odgovora koji podcjenjuju stvarna korupcijska iskustva građana. Na temelju Ankete o korištenju javnih usluga i poštenju u javnim službama, provedene u Hrvatskoj 2010. godine, u radu se problem neprijavljivanja korupcije razmatra sa dva stajališta. Najprije se analizira spremnost anketiranih da potvrde svoje sudjelovanje u korupcijskom djelu i razloge odbijanja davanja odgovora. U radu se ispituje percepcija rizika zlouporabe osobnih podataka i mišljenje ispitanika o zaštiti anonimnosti. Prema anketnim podacima obrađuju se stavovi ispitanika i razlozi neprijavljivanja kriminala službenim institucijama. Zasebno se analiziraju formalno i neformalno prijavljivanje korupcije. Rezultati ankete pokazuju visoku razinu oportunizma građana i manjak povjerenja u institucije, što može biti zapreka učinkovitoj provedbi antikorupcijske politike u Hrvatskoj.
