TAXONOMIES OF GREEN POLITICAL THEORIES HAVE SO FAR BEEN HAMPERED BY THE SHORTCOMINGS INHERENT TO THEIR HAVING BEEN DESIGNED ON THE BASIS OF (A SELECTION OF) POPULAR THEORISTS OR OF THEORIES KNOWN OR THOUGHT TO EXIST. THIS ARTICLE OFFERS A NEW APPROACH: A SYSTEMATIC, ANALYTICAL TAXONOMY OF GREEN IDEAS RATHER THAN THEORIES. IT DISTINGUISHES THE ISSUES OR DIMENSIONS ON WHICH GREEN THEORISTS CAN CHOOSE POSITIONS AT METAPHYSICAL, ETHICAL, POLITICAL AND POLICY LEVELS. IT IS HOPED THAT THIS TAXONOMY CAN BOTH OPEN UP NEW AVENUES OF GREEN THOUGHT AND HELP POLITICAL THEORISTS AND EMPIRICAL SCIENTISTS IN DESIGNING AND EVALUATING THEIR CHARACTERIZATIONS OF GREEN BELIEFS AND IDEOLOGIES.

Observers of elections often report that voters have engaged in protest voting. We find that "protest voting" refers to a wide range of behaviors, and we create a taxonomy of these phenomena. Support for fringe or insurgent parties is often labeled as protest voting. Voting theorists have used the term in a completely different way, identifying an unusual type of tactical voting as protest voting. Protest voting also occurs when voters cast blank, null, or spoiled ballots. There are also instances when protest voting is organized and directed by political elites. Finally, several countries provide voters with the option of casting a vote for "None of the Above," which some see as a form of protest voting. In addition to developing this taxonomy, we discuss the analytical and empirical challenges confronting research on each type of protest voting.

We look at ways of classifying runoff methods in terms of characteristics such as number of rounds, rules used to determine which candidates advance to the next round, and rules which determine the final winner. We also compare runoffs and so-called instant runoffs such as the alternative vote. [Copyright 2008 Elsevier Ltd.]
