¿Qué teoría?: La teoría en "Mad Money" ; What theory? The theory in "Mad Money"
; Mad Money" (Manchester University Press, 1998) is the completely rewritten and updated version of "Casino Capitalism" (Blackwells, 1986). It has been suggested —of both volumes— that there was no theory underlying Strange's discussion of the international financial system in them. This she argues in this Working Paper is emphatically not the case, Both volumes always implicitly, and often explicitly, are underpinned by the dominant themes that are reflected in Strange's work since the publication of "International Relations and International Economics: A Case of Mutual Neglect", International Affairs, 46 (2) 1970. These themes are threefold: Firstly a need to privilege the politics of the international financial system in the study of international relations; a discipline too long myopic in its focus on violent conflict and war between states at the expense of all else. (ii) A need to go beyond liberal political and economic theory and recognise the significance of "structural power" in the international system. (iii) A need to recognise that "the areas of significant ignorance" in our understanding of the role of the international financial system in an era of technological revolution and globalisation are becoming greater rather than smaller. For Strange, the structural power of capital is not constant and, therefore, cannot be accommodated in the logic of liberal economics. Thus, using the dictionary definition of mad —erratic, unpredictable, irrational behaviour, damaging not only to sufferers but also to others— we have, as she puts it "mad money".

14 Visions on Social Theory in Latinamerica
This text brings together 14 interventions by social scientists from different countries in Latin America. It is an exercise of collective reflection in which each author exposes in a condensed way the centrality of his vision on social theory and on the challenges that this entails for the development of social sciences in the contemporary Latin American context. The purpuse of the exercise is to show a general view of the development of social theory in the region, as well as to try to recover dynamics of collective recognition and production as forms of proactive resistance to the dominant fragmentation processes in the current academy. An impression shared by the authors is that the result of this dialogue experience makes evident the vitality and variety of sociological production in the region, as well as the need to advance in the construction of a common research agenda. ; Utopía y Praxis Latinoamericana publica bajo licencia Creative Commons Atribución-No Comercial-Compartir Igual 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). The normative method of positive economic theory
Economists tend to designate as normative economics that part of the theory which, according to the theorems of welfare or efficiency, create the foundation of political economy. This article defends two theses: first, that the normative is not only a part of economic theory, but also the method of building the positive economic ideas in the currently dominant neoclassical theory. This method allows that theory to claim to unify economic thought, eliminating the possibility and the necessity for alternative approaches. Nevertheless, and this is the second thesis, there are no legitimate theoretical reasons to accept this methnodology; thus it is impera tive to build a new basic theory.

On the role of desert in A Theory of Justice. Does Rawls have a theory of criminal punishment?
The article deals with the discussion around the theory of justification of the punitive practice that may be developed on the basis of John Rawls' work of political philosophy. It explores a proposal that places an authentic standard of criminal justice in Rawls's work, along with the classic standard of political distributive justice. Secondly, it discusses the foundations of moral philosophy of a certain critique to the mentioned proposal. Finally ir briefly develops the relationship between political philosophy (theory of justice) and the justification of the punitive practice (theory of punishment) as part of the contemporary debate about these matters.

In: Revista mexicana de ciencias políticas y sociales, Band 61, Heft 226, S. 61-87
ISSN: 2448-492X
Relevance theory and polítical advertising. A case study
This paper aims to apply Sperber & Wilson?s Relevance Theory (1986; 1995; 1987) and the two stage incongruity-resolution theory of humour (Attardo 1994) to explain how humorous interpretations are produced in a corpus of political billboards published by the Labour Party in the 1997, 2001 and 2005 British election campaigns. The intersemiosis (O?Halloran 2008) between the verbal and the visual will be taken into account in order to decode the meanings transmitted. It will be suggested that the viewers? access to background beliefs and assumptions in order to form a context against which new incoming information can be processed is also essential in order to decode meaning. The extraction of strongly or weakly implicated information is a good source of humorous effects. It will also be suggested that the interpretation depends on the viewer?s ideology, as ?relevance is always relevance to an individual? (Sperber & Wilson 1986: 142).
