This assemblage is based on the talk I gave at the EASST010 conference in Trento, Italy, September 03, 2010. It is composed of several kinds of materials. The ground structure is formed by the slides I showed at that occasion. These slides are commented in three different ways. Firstly by excerpts from the talk, secondly by comments added now when this assemblage is put together, and finally quotes from "Design Things", the book manuscript around which the talk circulated

In: Approaches to culture series Volume 3
This volume addresses the dynamics of materiality over time and space. In cross-cultural, multi-temporal and interdisciplinary studies the authors examine how things gain meaning and status, generate a multitude of emotions, and feed into the propagation of myths, narratives and discourses. The book is divided according to four themes: soft objects, stoic stories, consuming and the collectable, and waste and technologies. The first section discusses the meanings of the lived environment on the individual and national levels. The second section provides specific examples on the role of things in identity construction. The third section focuses on historical and contemporary aspects of consumption and collecting. The phenomena under scrutiny in the fourth section are moral dilemmas associated with and representations of dirt/waste and advancements in science and technology. Presenting diverse case studies of material culture, the volume points to rich interdisciplinary approaches in cultural theory.

This essay discusses a remark on the eye and the mouth in Bersani and Dutoit's Caravaggio's Secrets that links Caravaggio to Samuel Beckett. Exploring the idea of the gaze and the voice as "things" rather than objects that confirm the subject in its place, and connecting Bersani's understanding of the thing as escaping the subject-object relation in Beckett to Jacques Lacan's objet petit a, the essay posits this understanding of the thing as the basis of Bersani's interest in the possibility of a nonrelational sociality.
