I make two points about the role of threats for ethnographic fieldwork in contexts suffused by interpersonal violence. First, the experience of implicit and explicit threats operates as a powerful cultural agent that significantly transforms fieldworkers' relationship with the field. Second, subjecting oneself to threats can become a central component of the ethnographic immersion into the field. The notion of "threat wisdom" connects these two points by capturing the emerging competence to handle threats and resulting from "becoming threatened," "becoming threatful," and "becoming threat wise." To develop this argument, I discuss insights from my fieldwork with homeless people using cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine, in Barcelona.

Despite the theoretical & practical political relevance of the persistence of ascriptive group identification, almost nothing is known empirically about factors influencing it. Using data from 1,900 white Rs to the 1972 American Election Study of the Survey Research Center (U of Michigan), the correlates of group identification as "white" among white Americans are identified. In particular, the two-step linkage between external & perceived black threat, & group identification posited by the competition perspective is examined. The results of the ordinary least squares analysis indicate that this linkage may be less certain & more complex than previously suggested. 1 Table, 50 References. Modified HA

Multimodal, low intensity, kinetic as well as non-kinetic threats to international peace and security including cyber war, low intensity asymmetric conflict scenarios, global terrorism, piracy, transnational organized crime, demographic challenges, resources security, retrenchment from globalization and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction were identified by NATO as so called "Hybrid Threats" (cf BI-SC Input for a New NATO Capstone Concept for The Military Contribution to Countering Hybrid Enclosure 1 to 1500/CPPCAM/FCR/10-270038 and 5000 FXX/0100/TT-0651/SER: NU0040, dated 25 August 2010). This presentation aims to introduce the audience to this form of security threat with a particular focus on "cyber" terrorism and war. This new form of conflict in the fifth dimension has a truly hybrid risk potential and warrants a new holistic counter approach: from law enforcement, counter cyber strategies to kinetic responses. The authors will present the findings of an ongoing Hybrid Threat experiment, which is being undertaken at the Swedish Defence College, with a focus on the role of cyber attacks within the wider context of asymmetric conflict and how the existing legal framework governing the use of force and the law applicable to hostilities does not necessarily reflect on this new form of threat

Since the end of the Cold War, one of the most significant debates in international relations has been the question of whether the rise of China as a major economic, political and military power will be a force for stability or instability in the international system and the East Asian region. Forceful arguments have been put forward on both sides. This book examines perceptions of the 'China Threat', and governments' policies in response to the perceived threat in a wide range of countries, including the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, South Asia, South-East Asia and the Middle East
Abstract: "Asymmetry is as old as war. There have always been differences between opponents, which placed them into advantageous or disadvantageous positions, deciding the outcome of the battles/war/conflict. At a strategic level, thesedifferences led to what we call today "strategic asymmetry today"1. Present and future conflicts seem to be asymmetric. Keywords: Asymmetric threats; terrorism; military conflicts; terrorist organizations.
