Formålet med TRAPRIO projektet er at udvikle differentierede og fleksible trafikprioriteringsløsninger for forbedring af respons tiden for udrykningskøretøjer samt for forbedring af den kollektive trafik, især med henblik på at medvirke til en bedre busdriftsregularitet og bedre information. TRAPRIO løsningen er baseret på brugen af lavfrekvens batteriløs RFID tag-, computer- og radiokommunikationsteknologi. Der er i TRAPRIO projektet etableret fuld skala demonstrationsprojekter i Kolding, Devon og Kent County. TRAPRIO's tag-baserede positionerings og trafik prioritets system etablerer muligheden for a give forskellige typer biler prioritet alt efter behov. Dette system giver mulighed for at beslutningstagerne kan give prioritet til forskellige grupper af køretøjer alt efter den valgte trafikpolitik i byen. I modsætning til andre prioriteringssystemer giver TRAPRIO systemet et absolut minimum af indgreb i de valgte almindelige omløbstider i de enkelte kryds, idet brugen af lavfrekvens batteriløse tags for positionering kombineret med målinger af køretøjernes aktuelle hastighed betyder, at der kan afgives ønske om prioritet, så sent som muligt inden krydset. En effektiv trafikprioritering, giver en bedre trafikafvikling i byen, hvilket fører til et mindre emissionsniveau og et lavere energiforbrug. Trafiksikkerheden i forbindelse med udrykningskørsel vil blive væsentligt forbedret med TRAPRIO, idet udrykningskøretøjet altid vil have grønt lys i køreretningen kryds for kryds. TRAPRIO systemet giver en højere positioneringsnøjagtighed end DGPS til en lavere omkostning. Sammenlignet med andre løsninger f.eks. mikrobølger eller infrarøde beacons har TRAPRIO systemet den fordel, at det er nemmere og billigere at implementere samt at taggene i infrastrukturen er vedligeholdelsesfri, idet de er batteriløse. TRAPRIO systemet er yderligere meget velegnet til at videregive passager informationer i såvel bus som på busstoppesteder.
