One of the most challenging environmental threats to the ten countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been the haze, the sickening and deadly cloud of smoky pollution caused by widespread burning of land and forests in Indonesia. This book examines both the threat and response to it by analysing environmental cooperation in Southeast Asia from an international regime perspective. Tracing the development of regional cooperation on the haze and evaluating the effectiveness of the cooperation, the author argues that the haze crisis, combined with the economic crisis of 1997, has profoundly challenged the ASEAN modus operandi, and resulted in ASEAN's efforts to establish an environmental regime to cope with environmental challenges. The emerging ASEAN haze regime is a unique case study of a regional environmental institution in multi-levelled global environmental governance. Based on in-depth original research, this case study is integrated into international relations, political science, and comparative political analysis literatures and contributes to a better understanding of processes within the regional organisation.

A global water crisis with far-reaching and interconnected environmental, social, health and economic impacts threatens the world. In 2010, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety agreed to fund a project on hazard and crisis management in the Danube Delta, involving the Republic of Moldova, Romania and Ukraine (the Danube Delta project), within the framework of its Advisory Assistance Programme for Environmental Protection in the Countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, to be conducted under the auspices of the Industrial Accidents Convention. The general objective of the Danube Delta project was to improve the cooperation between the national authorities and industrial operators of the Republic of Moldova, Romania and Ukraine in the Danube Delta region through enhancing, and where possible harmonizing, the mechanisms and approaches for efficient and effective hazard and crisis management. The project promoted cooperation between the relevant authorities in the project countries (mostly authorities responsible for environmental protection, civil protection, transport, regional and local authorities, etc.) and between authorities and industry, in particular operators of oil terminals.The Danube Delta project significantly enhanced the transboundary cooperation between the participating countries at the expert level, as well as the cooperation and mutual trust and understanding between the national competent authorities and the industry.

Focusing on transboundary river systems and their basins, the authors explore the fresh water crisis of Himalayan Asia. While the region hosts some of the world's mightiest rivers, it is also home to rapidly modernizing, increasingly affluent, and demographically multiplying societies. This combination ensures both the depletion of water resources and the increase in disputes over ownership of transboundary river waters. In a thorough investigation, based on extensive field research across Asia, the authors examine how these disputes impact the present and future interstate relations of this key region.

This chapter is to demonstrate the challenges related to free time of seniors (especially EU residents) in the 21st century. The starting point for the considerations was to explain the concept of free time and to specify its characteristics, functions, and ways of using it. The structure of the seniors' time budget and leisure activities undertaken by this group were analysed (based on Eurostat data). Subsequently, one of the important forms of free time management, that is, tourism, was studied. First, the essence of tourist activity was discussed and the reasons for undertaking it in the autumn of life. Second, the functions of senior tourism were distinguished and data on the participation of seniors from EU countries in it were presented. Third, taking into account that the concept of active ageing is increasingly the participation in various types of courses, trainings, workshops, etc., the chapter defines the place of seniors in the process of lifelong learning. The tasks of the University of the Third Age (U3A) were systematized and the available data on the participation of European seniors in educational programmes were analysed. The conclusion emphasizes the heterogeneity of the silver head segment.
