"The nature of global governance is changing, as are the standards by which we judge its legitimacy. Whereas international institutions were long the exclusive preserve of national governments, the past decades have witnessed a gradual and partial shift from interstate cooperation to more complex forms of governance, involving participation by transnational actors, such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), advocacy networks, party associations, philanthropic foundations, and multinational corporations. Transnational Actors in War and Peace explores the identities, organization, strategies, and influence of transnational actors involved in contentious politics, armed conflict, and peacemaking over the last one hundred years. While the study of transnational politics has been a rapidly growing field, to date, the disparate array of actors have not been analyzed alongside each other, making it difficult to develop a common theoretical framework or determine their relative influence on international stability, war, and peace. This work seeks to fill this gap by bringing together a diverse set of scholars focused on a range of transnational actors, such as: pirates, foreign fighters, terrorists, private military security companies, criminal networks, religious groups, diasporas, political exiles, NGOs, environmental activists, global news agencies, and feminist advocacy networks. Each chapter examines a different transnational actor and is structured around five components: how the actor is organized; how it interacts with other actors; how it communicates both internally and externally; how it influences conflict/peace; and how it reflects developments in transnationalism

"The democratic deficit in contemporary global governance arrangements is a matter of increasing political and scholarly concern. Diese Studie erforscht die internationale Arbeit der deutschen politischen Stiftungen und verbindet sie mit den IB-Theorien zu transnationalen Akteuren und der Public-Diplomacy-Literatur. Ein Public-Diplomacy-Modell wird verwendet, um die transnationalen Interaktionsprozesse der Stiftungen systematisch zu untersuchen. Es integriert verschiedene Ansätze und geht davon aus, dass Public Diplomacy in einem Netzwerkumfeld stattfindet. Die Aktivitäten zur Demokratieförderung und zum Konfliktmanagement der Stiftungen werden als bestimmte Formen der Public Diplomacy untersucht. In zwei Fallstudien wird das Rule-of-Law-Programm der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Südosteuropa sowie die Aktivitäten der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Südthailand betrachtet. Dabei wird auf ihre Strategien zur Verbreitung von Ideen, ihre Netzwerkbildung sowie ihre Ressourcen der Soft Power eingegangen.
