Matikainen tarkasteli väitöstyössään Romanian juutalaisten tilannetta kansainvälisen vähemmistöjen suojelun ja juutalaisten diplomatian kautta. Britannian juutalaiset olivat yksi tärkeimmistä Itä-Euroopan juutalaisten auttamiseksi toimineista läntisistä juutalaisyhteisöistä. Tutkimuksen kohteena olivat Britannian juutalaisten diplomatia ja Britannian hallituksen näkemykset liittyen Romanian juutalaisten asemaan vuosina 1900–1914. Matikainen selvitti myös politiikan taustalla olleita motiiveita, jotka liittyivät osittain käsityksiin kansainvälisestä vähemmistöjen suojelusta. Toisaalta asiaan vaikuttivat myös ajankohtaiset poliittiset kysymykset kuten siirtolaisuuteen liittyneet ongelmat ja Balkanin alueen poliittinen tilanne.Ennen ensimmäistä maailmansotaa Euroopan juutalaisten historiaa leimasi kahtiajako Länsi- ja Itä-Euroopan välillä. Juutalaisten emansipaatio oli toteutunut useimmissa läntisen Euroopan ja Keski-Euroopan maissa 1800-luvun lopulle tultaessa, mutta joissakin itäisen Euroopan maissa, erityisesti Venäjällä ja Romaniassa, juutalaiset elivät vailla kansalaisoikeuksia ja heidän elämäänsä rajoitettiin juutalaisvastaisella lainsäädännöllä. Britannian juutalaisten diplomatia on tärkeä osa vähemmistöjen suojelun historiaa. ; The thesis discusses the Romanian Jewish problem in the early twentieth century from the perspective of Jewish diplomacy and minority rights. The number of Jews in Romania was approximately 270,000, or 4.5 per cent of the total population. The Romanian Jews were one of the first minority groups to be protected by means of international conventions. The Treaty of Berlin (1878) provided for equal rights to persons of all religious confessions in Romania. However, Jews were not granted Romanian citizenship, and their lives were regulated by a system of anti-Jewish legislation. In this situation, emancipated Jewish elites in Western Europe, including Britain, strove to help their coreligionists in Romania.British Jews, through their foreign policy organisation, the Conjoint Foreign Committee, tried to persuade the British Foreign Office to intervene on behalf of Romanian Jews. The British government agreed, in principle, that Romanian Jewish policy should be modified. It was reluctant to act, however, arguing that any intervention in Romanian affairs could only happen in concert with the other Great Powers.The attitudes of the British government towards Romanian Jews were shaped in part by interpretations on international minority protection. They were also influenced by political considerations such as Great Power rivalry and domestic problems relating to Jewish immigration. As to Anglo-Jewish views, practical considerations such as immigration also played a role, but policy was mainly shaped by perceptions of the struggle for Jewish emancipation and the role of privileged Jewries as defenders of their less fortunate coreligionists.Anglo-Jewish diplomacy did not result in any visible improvement in the situation of Romanian Jews before 1914. The legal emancipation of Romanian Jews only came to pass after the First World War. However, Jewish diplomacy was important on numerous occasions in promoting the subject of minority rights. The activities of the Anglo-Jewry on behalf of Romanian Jews were a significant phase in the history of minority protection.

Gender equality is an essential part of Finnish self-understanding. The public discussion on equality does not, however, only focus on gender; it is also used to promote antiimmigration-minded, homophobic opinions. In the article, the co-existence of contradictory discourses on gender equality is interpreted as populist rhetoric. The articulations of gender equality in online debates on gender, sexuality, and immigration are analyzed. The main questions are: How is gender equality re-framed in anti-immigration-minded online debate? How are the notions of sexuality and gender fixed in order to oppose immigration? How are gender, sexuality, and immigration articulated intersectionally? The investigation focuses on an article on Muslim homosexuals, published in the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat in March 2013, and the discussion that followed on blogs and in online discussion fora. The logic of the articulation in the empirical material is analyzed by identifying five discursive modes for discussing gender equality in opposing Muslim immigration: The Finns Party as defenders of sexual and gender equality; Equality for Muslim women; 'The Tolerant' as scapegoats in risking achieved equality; Othering Islam; and Equality for the Westerners. The analysis indicates how the subjects of sexual and gender equality are produced, and illustrates the ability of populist rhetoric to adopt topics, agendas, and ideologies from other discourses and re-frame them to promote its political aims. The article discusses how equality is used changeably, referring to varying groups of people. In populist rhetoric, the themes 2 traditionally associated with sexual and gender equality in the Nordic welfare states can be ignored; the concept is detached from all its emancipatory meanings. Phonetic resources, like dialects and accents, are used in ethnic humour to build up a recognisable character that pokes fun at the stereotypes associated with a particular identity, sometimes with critical and political undertones. In this article, we examine the manipulation of one such resource, aspiration, used in performing and mocking one such clichéd character, called the fake Sámi. This character has a contested history in Finnish tourism and marketing practices, and is embedded in a long-standing debate about who can use emblems of Sámi identity for economic purposes. Adopting a sociophonetic language regard and folk linguistics approaches (Preston 2010; Niedzielski & Preston 2003) we explore how "fakeness" is constructed phonetically by the actors performing "Fake Sámi" in an indigenous Sámi television comedy show during a period of intense political debate in Finland over the legal definition of the category of indigenous Sámi. By analysing the use of hyperbolic aspiration of a prominent feature of Lappish Finnish dialect, the non-initial syllable /h/-sound, we show how the fakeness is performed by evoking linguistic stereotypes of a Finnish Lappish dialect and a Finnish English accent by a deliberate misuse of aspiration: aspirating when standard phonemes in speech should not be aspirated and not aspirating when phonemes should be aspirated. We argue that this kind of deliberate ambivalence and misuse of phonetic resources is a phonetic resource for reflexive postmodern identity performances. ; peerReviewed

Diversity is characteristic of all societies, and the expanding international migration we see today has rendered modern societies increasingly pluralistic. Accommodating various groups – dealing with differences and managing diversity in practice – has become one of the most important contemporary challenges. The research at hand examines the role of international human rights norms in the efforts to address the challenges of maintaining diverse yet integrated societies. A comprehensive analysis of the norms is combined with practically oriented views on integration put forward by three international bodies. The focus is on the human rights documents which are applicable in Europe, with consideration of the approaches to integration taken within the European Union as well. The analysis draws on insights into integration beyond the human rights framework to enable a critical appraisal of the human rights regime and to elucidate the multifaceted elements that are required to foster incorporation into society and ensure successful integration. The general aim of the research is to determine the role and limits of the current international human rights norms in this process.

Abstract This thesis investigates Finnish criminal trials that involve people from cultural minorities through the use of ethnographic methods. The study examines how those involved in criminal trials actively mobilise the notion of culture, on one hand, yet reproduce an image of law and its subjects as acultural and without context, on the other. Through analysing the processes of culture construction and deconstruction in courts, this study adds to theoretical discussions on legal knowledge production and to methodological debates on the ethnographic study of law. In studying the details of legal knowledge production regarding cultures taking place in courts, it challenges the essentialisation of legal knowledge that has been furthered in much of the previous research on cultural diversity in law courts and stresses the benefits resulting from the use of courtroom ethnography when studying law. First, this study examines how, and by whom, the notion of culture is interpreted and mobilised in Finnish courts. The analysis reveals that cultures and cultural identities are discussed and contested in courts by judges, litigants, and lawyers, but also by eyewitnesses, interpreters as well as indirectly by the Finnish parliament. This process ties into imagining the "cultural other" but also the "cultural normal", and it leads into reproducing stereotypical notions of cultures and cultural identities. Secondly, this study investigates the deconstructions of culture taking place in courts through analysing the practices in which the socio-cultural background of litigants and legal institutions are erased. These practices, it is concluded, draw on the law's commitment to particular ideals regarding legal subjectivity, neutrality and equality. Finally, this study draws attention to the institutional logics of the Finnish court system and examines the hegemonic idea of dispute resolution that characterises criminal trials. As for practical implications, the findings lead into considering whether the involvement of trained cultural experts could contribute towards making the discussions regarding cultural backgrounds in trials more transparent and informed, and if allowing witnesses to swear by their god would, in some cases, be advisable. ; Tiivistelmä Väitöskirjassa tutkitaan etnografisin menetelmin suomalaisia rikosoikeudenkäyntejä, joissa on osana henkilöitä vähemmistökulttuureista. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan, kuinka rikosoikeudenkäynteihin osallistuvat henkilöt toisaalta aktiivisesti valjastavat kulttuurin käsitettä eri tarkoituksiin ja toisaalta luovat kuvaa laista ja sen toimijoista kulttuurittomina ja kontekstistaan vapaina. Näitä kulttuurin de/konstruoimisen prosesseja analysoimalla väitöskirja osallistuu teoreettisiin keskusteluihin oikeudellisen tiedon rakentumisesta ja metodologisiin keskusteluihin lain etnografisesta tutkimisesta. Tutkimalla oikeudellisen tiedon rakentumisen yksityiskohtia tutkimus haastaa oikeudellisen tiedon essentialisointia, jota on edistetty suuressa osassa aiempaa tutkimusta liittyen kulttuuriseen monimuotoisuuteen tuomioistuimissa. Väitöskirja myös alleviivaa etnografisen lain tutkimuksen hyötyjä. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan ensiksi, miten, ja keiden toimesta, kulttuurin käsitettä tulkitaan ja käytetään suomalaisissa tuomioistuimissa. Analyysi osoittaa, että kulttuureista ja kulttuuri-identiteeteistä keskustelevat ja kiistelevät oikeudessa paitsi tuomarit, asianajajat, vastaajat ja asianomistajat, myös silminnäkijätodistajat, tulkit ja epäsuorasti Suomen hallitus. Tämä prosessi kiinnittyy "kulttuurisen toisen" mutta myös "kulttuurisen normaalin" kuvitteluun, ja se johtaa usein kulttuuristereotypioiden uusintamiseen. Toiseksi väitöskirjassa tarkastellaan kulttuurin dekonstruoimista oikeudessa kiinnittämällä huomiota käytäntöihin, joissa vastaajien ja asianomistajien mutta myös oikeusinstituutioiden sosiokulttuurinen tausta häivytetään näkyvistä. Väitöskirjassa todetaan, että nämä käytänteet nojaavat lain erityisiin tulkintoihin oikeussubjektista, neutraaliudesta ja yhdenmukaisuudesta. Lopuksi tutkimuksessa kiinnitetään huomiota suomalaisen tuomioistuinjärjestelmän institutionaaliseen logiikkaan ja tarkastellaan rikosoikeudenkäyntien hegemonista käsitystä riidanratkaisusta. Tutkimustulosten mahdolliset käytännön hyödyt liittyvät kulttuuriasiantuntijoiden hyödyntämiseen ja todistajan vakuutukseen. Tutkimustulokset antavat aihetta pohtia, voisivatko koulutetut kulttuuriasiantuntijat tehdä oikeudessa käytävistä kulttuurikeskusteluista läpinäkyvämpiä ja asiantuntevampia, sekä voisiko jumalan nimeen vannomisen salliminen todistajille olla joissain tapauksissa suositeltavaa.

Tämä opinnäyte analysoi Moldovan venäjänkielisen väestön poliittista identiteettiä käyttäen lähteenään venäläisessä sosiaalisessa mediassa (vKontakte) käytyjä keskusteluja. Tutkimus on jaoteltu temaattisesti historiaa, kieltä, Transnistriaa, muita nykyhetken poliittisia kysymyksiä ja tulevaisuusnäkymiä käsitteleviin lukuihin. Yhdessä nämä alaluvut muodostavat laaja-alaisen kuvan tutkimuksen kohteena olevan ihmisryhmän poliittisista näkemyksistä. Työn teoreettinen pohja rakentuu poliittisen identiteetin, nationalismin ja geopolitiikan käsitteille, joita sovelletaan sosiaalisessa mediassa käytyjen keskustelujen analyysiin käyttäen metodina tekstianalyysia. Vertailua tehdään Venäjän ulkopolitiikan retoriikkaan, joka kohdistuu "lähiulkomailla" asuviin "maamiehiin", toisin sanoen entisissä neuvostotasavalloissa asuvaan venäjänkieliseen väestöön. Lisäksi Moldovan tilannetta verrataan muihin venäjänkielisiä vähemmistöjä omaaviin entisiin neuvostotasavaltoihin tukeutuen aiempaan tutkimukseen aiheesta. Tutkimus osoittaa että neuvostokaudella syntynyt "Moldovalaisuus"-ideologia ja siihen liittyvä retoriikka on edelleen voimissaan keskusteltaessa poliittisiin kysymyksiin ja Moldovan venäjänkielisen väestön identiteettiin liittyvistä kysymyksistä. Myös venäläisen median vaikutus näkyy tiettyihin poliittisiin tapahtumiin liittyvässä keskustelussa. Kieli-identiteetti vaikuttaakin olevan monin tavoin yhteydessä yksilön sosiaaliseen identiteettiin ja poliittisiin mielipiteisiin, ja kielikysymys vaikuttaa kaikkien analysoitujen keskustelujen taustalla. Aiempi tutkimus on tuottanut samankaltaisia tuloksia muista entisistä neuvostotasavalloista, vaikka tilanne onkin murroksessa venäjänkielisen väestön muuttuessa yhä suuremmassa määrin kaksikieliseksi. Toisaalta tutkimus osoittaa Moldovan venäjänkielisen väestön moniäänisyyden: viimeaikainen poliittinen käänne kohti EU:ta saa osakseen tukea ja kaikki kolme pääideologiaa (Romania- ja Venäjä-suuntautuneisuus sekä moldovalainen patriotismi) jotka vaikuttavat Moldovan sisä- ja ulkopolitiikassa näkyvät myös käyttämissäni lähteissä. Analyysiini pohjaten voidaankin todeta, että historialliset tekijät, valtiollisen tason jatkuvasti muuttuva poliittinen suuntautuminen, Moldovan kulttuurinen ja geopoliittinen sijainti idän ja lännen välissä, sekä taloudelliset ongelmat ovat johtaneet Moldovan venäjänkielisen väestön jakautuneisiin identiteetteihin ja poliittisiin mielipiteisiin. ; This study analyzes the political identity of Moldova's Russophone population using discussions on Russian social media site vKontakte as a source. The research is divided thematically, covering themes of history, language, Transnistria, other questions of current politics, and views on the future. Together these themes form a fairly wide image of the political attitudes of this group of people. The theoretical basis of the work consists of concepts of political identity, nationalism, and geopolitics. These concepts are applied to discussions on social media using textual analysis. Comparisons to rhetoric of Russian foreign policy aimed at "compatriots" residing in the "near abroad", in other words the Russophone populations of post-Soviet states, are applied. In addition, comparisons to the situation in other post-Soviet states with Russian diaspora are made based on previous research. The research shows that rhetoric stemming from the Moldovanist ideology of the Soviet period is still actively used in discussion of many themes related to the political opinions and identity of the Russophone population of Moldova. Also the impact of Russian media is visible in discussion concerning certain political events. It seems that language identity is in many ways connected to social identity and political opinions, and the language question is present in discussion concerning all themes. Previous research has gained similar results from other post-Soviet states, even though it seems that situation might be changing as the Russophone population in these areas is becoming increasingly bilingual. On the other hand this study demonstrates the multivocal nature of the Russophone population of Moldova: also opinions supporting the relatively recent political turn towards the EU are apparent in the material and all three major ideologies (pro-Romanian, pro-Russian, Moldovan patriot) that control the field of politics in Moldova are also visible in my sources. Thus, according to my analysis, it seems that historical factors, constantly changing political orientations, Moldova's cultural and geopolitical position between the East and the West, as well as economic problems have resulted in split identities and political views of this group of people.

This study is an attempt to better understand the relationship between Finns and Russian minorities living in Finland. This study considers the role of perceived threats to the attitudes of Finnish adolescents towards Russian minorities. The theoretical framework for this study was the integrated threat theory (ITT). Even though ITT has been revised and threats have been reduced to two major threats (realistic and symbolic threats) (Stephan et al., 2015), this study utilized the original conceptualization of ITT which stipulates that prejudice and negative attitudes towards minorities can be explained by four types of threats that are: realistic threats, symbolic threats, negative stereotypes, and intergroup anxiety. Realistic threats are threats to the physical and economic wellbeing and political power of the in-group; symbolic threats are threats that arise because of differences in norms, values and morals with the out-group; negative stereotypes are implied threats to the in-group; and intergroup anxiety refers to the anxiety the in-group might experience in the process of interaction with members of the out-group especially when both groups have had a history of antagonism (Stephan & Stephan, 1996, 1998, 2000). First, this study showed Finns in general do percieve Russian minorities as a threat (realistic threat, symbolic threat, and negative stereotypes) and that among the different types of threat, realistic threat and symobolic threat were more prevalent among older Finns than among younger Finns. No significant difference was found between both groups for negative stereotypes. This study also showed perceived threat to be a significant predictor of prejudice, and that among the different types of threat, negative stereotyping was the strongest predictor of negative attitudes towards Russian minorities. This study also revealed that Finnish adolescents generally perceive immigrants as a threat and that among the different types of threats, realistic threat and symbolic threat were the most perceived threats from immigrants in Finland. This is especially important because realistic threat and symbolic threat were found to be positively related to prejudice or negative attitudes towards immigrants and this positive relationship between threat and prejudice was the same among early, middle, and late adolescents.

This thesis explores Sign Language Peoples' aspirations for the legal recognition of sign languages, with specific focus on Finland and Scotland. It highlights the timely need to strengthen (in practice) and scrutinize (academically) the legal measures that have been achieved as well as their implementation – and to measure all this against the challenges of endangerment and sustaining vitality. The theoretical framework for this study is centred in language policy and planning and political theory. The research methodology draws on principles of the ethnography of language policy and uses two traditional qualitative research methods, that is, interviews and participant observation, plus desk research. Sign Language Peoples' campaigns for recognition seek a differentiated citizenship – a form of group representation rights which can accommodate their communities' particular needs and practices. The study identifies five categories of recognition legislation and demonstrates that most legislation remains symbolic: while some legislation grants instrumental rights to sign languages, legislation establishing or protecting educational linguistic and language acquisition rights remains scarce. This is especially problematic given the complex combination of demographic, political, economic, social and educational pressures facing Sign Language Peoples' communities. The study further identifies both common ground with other linguistic and cultural minorities and one significant difference – that Sign Language Peoples are also perceived and administered as people with disabilities and, as such, manifest dual category membership. While this should not in theory be problematic, in fact the policies which govern their lives traditionally frame them within only one category – as people with disabilities. The study demonstrates how this has negatively impacted the recognition of sign languages and signing communities. It goes on to analyse the highly politicized nature of sign language planning, especially in relation to discourses around the linguistic rights of deaf children. It also critically evaluates the mixed rationales for sign language rights and the justifications on which these rights are based. The evidence suggests that sign language legislation and the arguments for sign language rights are subject to a very particular set of discourses, which expose them to a degree of scrutiny not experienced by discourses for spoken minority language rights and legislation. Comparison of these discourses leads the author of this thesis to argue that it is essential that the protection and promotion of sign languages should include recognition of the multilingual practices of signing communities, and of their group rights. To conclude, it is argued that recognition legislation should specifically address the issue of vitality and the factors and strategies needed to ensure this vitality, including ways in which sign languages can create new generations of users without relying solely on intergenerational transmission.

"This book provides the reader with understanding of the phenomenon of silent resistance, collecting and presenting research on it. Regulating, governing or controlling human activity often generates open resistance, which has been studied from the points of view of democracy, civil disobedience or political activism, for example. However, power relations and conflicts can also involve another kind of resistance, which may not necessarily even be recognised as resistance at first. It can be called silent, passive, invisible or everyday resistance. Silent resistance is a way of the subjugated or otherwise marginalised to challenge the dominant rules or systems. Because it does not proclaim resistance but rather tries to stay out of publicity, it is risk-free and low-profile activity that is seemingly non-political – and you can get away with it.
Silent resistance can take many different forms: it may appear, for example, as silence and grumbling, isolation, avoiding and hindering issues or shifting attention to something irrelevant. The importance of everyday resistance rises from the signals of small networks in a situation where open confrontation is not possible or desired, but total inactivity is not an option either. Moreover, silent resistance remaining in the margin cannot be considered separate from open resistance, but as an important part in the process of realising more open resistance. Although power relations serve as the event framework of the phenomenon, silent resistance is a weapon not only in the hands of the subjugated. Its tactics can also be used by those who hold power.
With the articles in the book, the reader can follow the most diverse situations of silent resistance through both historical and contemporary events. The cases outline different forms of silent resistance, as well as its mechanisms and motives. The articles in the collection reveal aspects of sociology, cultural anthropology, cultural research, youth research and historical research. This emphasises the wide spectrum of silent resistance, its loudness and multidisciplinary character.

Marginaaliin jäävää hiljaista vastarintaa ei myöskään voida nähdä erillisenä avoimesta vastarinnasta, vaan se on tärkeä osa avoimemman vastarinnan aktualisoitumisen prosessia. Vaikka valtasuhteet toimivat ilmiön tapahtumakehyksinä, hiljainen vastarinta ei ole ainoastaan alistettujen toimintaa. Sen taktiikoita voivat käyttää myös valtaapitävät.
Kirjan artikkeleiden mukana pääsemme seuraamaan mitä moninaisimpia hiljaisen vastarinnan tapahtumatilanteita sekä historiallisten että nykypäivän tapahtumien avulla. Erilaiset tapaukset avaavat ja jäsentävät hiljaisen vastarinnan esiintymismuotoja, samoin kuin sen mekanismeja ja motiiveja. Kokoelman artikkeleissa tulevat esiin sosiologian, kulttuuriantropologian, kulttuurintutkimuksen, nuorisotutkimuksen ja historiantutkimuksen näkökulmat. Tämä korostaa hiljaisen vastarinnan laajaa kirjoa, sen äänekkyyttä ja monialaisuutta. "

The Rohingya are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. Military campaigns conducted by Myanmar against the Rohingya have led to numerous deaths, widespread cases of sexual violence, the destruction of hundreds of villages, and the deportation of more than 700,000 people to Bangladesh. These events have triggered proceedings at the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC has arguably failed to address the religious dimensions of crimes and facts in some of its previous jurisprudence appropriately. The entanglement of law and religion at the ICC may lead to an impoverished ratio decidendi and disregard for the victims' claims. We hence argue that, by disentangling law and religion in the proceedings related to the Rohingya, the ICC may be able to enhance the consideration of both elements. This approach should result in (1) appropriate fact-finding related to the Rohingya's identity on ethnic and religious grounds as well as religious dimensions of mass atrocities; (2) attribution of criminal responsibility for serious violations of human rights, including rights related to the Rohingya's religious identity, which constitute international crimes; and (3) reparations for victims to redress harm inflicted on them. ; peerReviewed

Abstract. This qualitative research analyses, trough the concept of heteronormativity, the support that is given in dealing with LGBTQ+ themes in subject teacher training (aineenopettajakoulutus) at University of Oulu from the perspective of subject teacher students. This study examines the subject teacher students' perspective to LGBTQ+ themes and students, their description on received support from the subject teacher training programme in dealing with LGBTQ+ themes and students, and perceived heteronormative practices in teacherhood and subject teacher training at University of Oulu. The data consist of written data from two sets that were gathered in November 2020 and mid-February of 2021 respectively: a qualitative survey (n= 36) with open questions and data from two interviews. As a theoretical framework, this study uses queer theory, and more specifically, Judith Butler's view on gender as a socially constructed performative act. This view is used as an indicator for LGBTQ+ positive thinking to support the theorised open-mindedness of teacher students in Finland. In terms of heteronormativity in Finnish teacher education, this study draws on the research of the TASUKO programme and Jukka Lehtonen's extensive research on heteronormativity in Finnish teacher training and sets out to investigate whether the notion of invisible and often unquestionable heteronormative praxis in Finnish teacher training is perceived to be present at University of Oulu from the point of view of subject teacher students. The data was analysed by using theory-based content analysis, where predetermined theory was contrasted to the gathered data to understand the subject teacher students' perceptions of gender and sexual minorities, if they have received support from teacher education in term of dealing with LGBTQ+ themes and students, and if and how heteronormative praxis is manifested in subject teacher training at University of Oulu according to subject teacher students. The data indicates subject teacher students that participated in this study at University of Oulu mostly display a positive and supportive attitude towards LGBTQ+ themes and community members as previous research theorise. Majority of the subject teacher students that took part in this study mostly defined gender as a socially constructed, where individual's self-determination is in key role. However, in some cases gender was given a hybrid definition that partially relies on biology, where gender is seen as a biological fact, indicating that heteronormative view on gender among Finnish teacher students has not entirely vanished. The results also indicate that the teacher students' perception is that the subject teacher training at the University of Oulu has some LGBTQ+ elements included in it, but they mostly stay marginalised or are treated with minimum attention. Therefore, the participants of this study described that receiving support during teacher training in handling LGBTQ+ themes and students was miniscule, although signs of active partaking on the programme's side is visible. It seems that despite extensive legislation and state-led gender inclusivity programme in teacher training (TASUKO), LGBTQ+ themes have stayed in the margins of subject teacher education at the University of Oulu according to the students, aligning this study to previous research.Tiivistelmä. Tämä kvalitatiivinen tutkimus analysoi heteronormatiivisuutta ja saatua tukea LGBTQ+ yhteisöön kuuluvien teemojen ja oppilaiden kohtaamisesta sekä heteronormatiivisuudesta Oulun yliopiston aineenopettajakoulutuksessa. Tässä tutkimuksessa tutkittiin aineenopettajaopiskelijoiden suhtautumista sukupuoli- ja seksuaalivähemmistöteemoihin sekä LGBTQ+ oppilaisiin, aineenopettajaopiskelijoiden kuvaamaan saatuun tuen määrään näiden asioiden käsittelyssä aineenopettajakoulutuksen aikana sekä aineenopettajaopiskelijoiden kykyä hahmottaa heteronormatiivisia käytäntöjä opettajuudessa sekä aineenopettajakoulutuksessa. Analysoitava data koostui kvalitatiivisen kyselyn kirjallisista tuloksista (n= 36) sekä kahdesta haastattelusta. Kysely pidettiin marraskuussa 2020 ja haastattelut helmikuun 2021 aikana. Teoreettisina viitekehyksinä tässä tutkimuksessa on käytetty queer-tutkimusta, tarkemmin sanottuna Judith Butlerin näkemystä sukupuolesta performatiivisena ja sosiaalisesti rakennettuna kokonaisuutena. Edelliset tutkimukset osoittavat suomalaisten opettajaopiskelijoiden olevan varsin avoimia vähemmistöjä kohtaan. Aineenopettajaopiskelijan kykyä hahmottaa sukupuoli Butlerin antamien raamien mukaan toimi näin ollen mittarina positiiviselle ajattelulle seksuaali- ja sukupuolivähemmistöihin liittyviä teemoja ja oppilaita kohtaan. Heteronormatiivisuutta on suomalaisessa opettajankoulutuksessa tutkittu verrattain vähän, mutta tulokset osoittavat opettajankoulutuksen olevan edelleen heteronormatiivista, jokseenkin hiljaisesti vähemmistöt hyväksyvää. Jukka Lehtosen tutkimuksia ja TASUKO-hankkeen tuloksia on käytetty tässä tutkimuksessa luomaan teoria, jonka mukaan aineenopettajakoulutus Oulun yliopistossa edelleen pitkälti heteronormatiivinen. Kerätty data analysoitiin teorialähtöisen sisältöanalyysin keinoin, jolloin edellisistä tutkimustuloksista luotiin teoria Oulun yliopiston aineenopettajakoulutuksen heteronormatiivisuudesta. Teoreettisten viitekehysten avulla analysoitiin aineenopettajaopiskelijoiden suhtatumista sukupuoli- ja seksuaalivähemmistöihin, aineenopettajaopiskelijoiden saamaa tukea kyseisten teemojen ja oppilaiden kohtaamiseen sekä heteronormatiivisten käytänteiden esiintuomiseen omassa opettajuudessa sekä Oulun yliopiston aineenopettajakoulutuksessa. Tulokset osoittavat tähän tutkimukseen osallistuneiden tulevien aineenopettajien olevan suurimmalta osin avoimia sekä seksuaali- ja sukupuolivähemmistöjä tukevia. Moni määritteli sukupuolen Butlerin näkemyksen mukaan, mutta huomattava osuus antoi hybridivastauksen, jossa on viitteitä biologiaan ja heteronormatiiviseen ajatteluun sukupuolesta. Tulokset osoittavat seksuaali- ja sukupuoli teemojen olevan hyvin marginaalinen osa aineenopettajakoulutusta Oulun yliopistossa, joka kertoo vallalla olevasta hiljaisesta heteronormatiivisuudesta, joka hyväksyy vähemmistöt mutta ei aktiivisesti ota kantaa näihin. Suurin osa tutkimukseen osallistuneista kuitenkin tunsi asian tärkeäksi ja olisi halunnut saada lisää koulutusta aiheeseen liittyen. Tämä kertoo, ettei seksuaali- ja sukupuolivähemmistötietoinen koulutus ole saanut merkittävää jalansijaa Oulun yliopiston aineenopettajakoulutuksessa, vaikka sitä on toivottu.

Abstract. The aims of this thesis are to explore the speeches and rhetoric of United States Presidents John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon regarding the Apollo Moon landing project and look for the effects of that rhetoric on the general public's opinion on Project Apollo. The methods used for examining the presidential speeches are Discourse Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis, where DA is used to look at the language on a general level, and CDA to analyse political relations within said language. The main finding from Kennedy's speeches is his advocation of ideological supremacy over Communist countries. Nixon's speeches were in stark contrast with Kennedy's, with détente being the dominant theme. This material is complemented with interview data provided by Kent State University Professor Kenneth Bindas. His "NASA Moon Landing Oral History Project" was conducted in 2015 and 2016, where his students interviewed 87 people, who were born in 1951 or before, therefore being a full-fledged member of the society by the Apollo 11 landing in 1969. Most of the interviewees do not refer to the two presidents at all, and bring up their personal stories, the Vietnam War and racial injustice as the key events of that time. Some of the interviewees refer to Kennedy in relation to the Moon landings, but Nixon, even though he was president during the time of the landings, is rarely mentioned in the interview data. Prior research, along with these interviews, point that Nixon's career and public image is very much overshadowed by the Watergate spying scandal, and his involvement in Project Apollo is rarely remembered. The thesis also covers some of the opinions people of different identity backgrounds had of Project Apollo. These are also found in the interview data, but also from other, prior research. The white male populace felt pride and patriotism when Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, but minorities felt disconnected from it. Racial injustice towards the African-American populace distanced them from Apollo, as millions of dollars were poured into flying a handful of white men into space, when thousands of people of colour were housed in unhabitable conditions. In many of the interviews given by women, they have no or very little recollection of Apollo. This reflects their place in the society in 1969: to stay at home and look after the children, when men were out forming social circles to discuss and enjoy matters such as Apollo. The conclusion of this thesis is that Kennedy's agenda evident in his speeches, the importance of the Moon landings in the Space Race and ideological supremacy, is still remembered and thought of as a valid point, therefore Kennedy's rhetoric is considered a success. Nixon's policy of détente is evident in his speeches, but it is not referred to at all in the interview data, therefore his rhetoric was not as successful as Kennedy's.Tiivistelmä. Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena on tutkia Yhdysvaltain presidenttien John F. Kennedyn ja Richard Nixonin puheita ja retoriikkaa Apollo-kuulennoista, ja tämän retoriikan vaikutusta kansan mielipiteeseen aiheesta. Tutkimusmetodeina toimii Discourse Analysis (diskurssianalyysi) ja Critical Discourse Analysis (kriittinen diskurssianalyysi), joista DA:n avulla tutkitaan kieltä yleisellä tasolla, ja CDA:lla myös poliittisia suhteita kielen sisällä. Kennedyn puheista välittyy argumentointi ideologisen ylivallan saamiseksi kommunistisista maista. Nixonin puheiden pääteema oli liennytys, mikä on käytännössä vastakkainen lähtökohta Kennedyn argumenteista. Tätä materiaalia tukee Kent State University -yliopiston professori Kenneth Bindaksen ystävällisesti luovuttama haastatteludata, jossa hänen opiskelijansa haastattelivat 87:ta henkilöä, jotka olivat syntyneet vuonna 1951 tai aiemmin, ja täten olivat täysiä yhteiskunnan jäseniä vuonna 1969. Aiempi tutkimus, yhdessä näiden haastattelujen kanssa osoittaa, että Nixonin ura ja maine on Watergate-vakoiluskandaalin tahraama, ja hänen osallistumistaan Apollo-projektiin ei juuri muisteta. Tutkielma kattaa myös mielipiteitä, mitä eri identiteetin omaavilla kansalaisilla oli Apollo-projektista. Nämä mielipiteet ovat esillä haastatteludatassa, mutta myös aiemmassa tutkimuksessa. Valkoiset miehet tunsivat ylpeyttä ja isänmaallisuutta Apollo 11 -lennon laskeutuessa Kuun pinnalle, mutta vähemmistöt eivät tunteneet samanlaista yhteyttä tapahtumaan. Rodullinen epätasa-arvo afrikkalaisamerikkalaista vähemmistöä kohtaan erotti heidät muun kansan yhteenkuuluvuuden tunteesta. Miljoonia dollareita käytettiin muutaman valkoisen miehen lennättämiseen Kuuhun, samalla kun rotuvähemmistöt kärsivät esimerkiksi elinkelvottomista asumisjärjestelyistä. Usealla haastatellulla naisella ei ole juurikaan muistikuvaa Apollo-kuulennoista. Tämä heijastaa heidän asemaansa vuoden 1969 yhteiskunnassa: naisten tuli jäädä kotiin huolehtimaan lapsista, samalla kun miehet pystyivät muodostamaan sosiaalisia piirejä, joissa keskustella ja nauttia Apollon kaltaisista aiheista. Tutkielman päätös on se, että Kennedyn puheissa esiin tuleva agenda, eli kuulentojen tärkeys "Space Race" -avaruuskilvassa ja ideologisen ylivallan saamisessa, muistetaan yhä. Haastattelujen ja aikaisemman tutkimuksen valossa Kennedyn retoriikkaa voidaan pitää onnistuneena. Nixonin liennytyspolitiikka käy ilmi hänen puheissaan, mutta siihen ei viitata ollenkaan aikalaishaastatteluissa, eli hänen retoriikkansa ei ollut yhtä onnistunutta kuin Kennedyn.
