""Liberal universality" is the dominant framework of human rights in the literature. This paradigm asserts that human rights norms must be interpreted by prioritizing individualism, secularism, and autonomy in all spheres of life. According to this perspective, religiously grounded and duty-oriented visions should not be part of human rights standards, and in some cases, they must be excluded from international debates. This situation is due to a lack of academic scrutiny of the difference between human rights as internationally recognized norms and human rights standards or interpretations as developed by international mechanisms through this paradigm. The case study of the current development of sexual and reproductive health and rights reveals key problems with this interpretative framework: its questionable neutrality, its reduced notion of viewpoint diversity, and its top-down approach that disregards people's real concerns. This book proposes to go back to basics by rediscovering the notion of "pluralistic universality" of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, which welcomes interdependent and religiously grounded worldviews that are more compatible with non-Western cultures and some Western traditions. In this sense, the book encourages a redefinition of the universality of human rights in the light of the right to self-determination, as a tool to foster bottom-up approaches, intercultural dialogue, and global consensus for the development of universally acceptable human rights standards. In this way, these standards will enjoy greater legitimacy because they will reflect an international agreement that is responsive to local realities and one that accepts reasonable disagreement in controversial issues"--

"Precarious Privilege demonstrates how social class permeates all aspects of the racialization of illegality in Atlanta today, from the stigmatized image of the "typical Latino" as a working-class undocumented Mexican to the political and media elites that construct this image to the heritage belief systems, identities, and markers of prestige that middle-class Latino immigrants deploy to resist such stigmatization. As the intensifying state-sponsored racialization of illegality throughout the United States threatens the status of Latino professionals, many marshal transnational middle-class status to combat it. To understand how social class privilege shapes both the experience of racialization of illegality and middle-class Latino immigrants' reactions and responses, Irene Browne addresses two guiding questions: First, how do first-generation middle-class Mexican and Dominican immigrants experience the racialization of illegality in Atlanta? Second, how does social class factor into this experience of racialization, and into the strategies that Mexican and Dominican immigrants deploy to negotiate and resist it? The book will aid policymakers and scholars in efforts to address anti-immigrant racism and benefit professionals such as teachers, healthcare workers, and counselors by highlighting the diversity within the Latino immigrant population and identifying the difficulties that this population faces. Na rechten in Amsterdam te hebben gestudeerd,werkte F.H.M. Grapperhaus (1927-2010) als belastingconsulent. Hij promoveerde in Tilburg op een onderzoek waarin hij de leer van het globale evenwicht uitwerkte. Als staatssecretaris van Financin in het kabinet-De Jong (1967-1971) loodste hij onder meer de nieuwe, op Europese leest geschoeide, omzetbelasting door het parlement. In deze hoedanigheid raakte hij naar eigen zeggen geobsedeerd door het streven naar vereenvoudiging van de belastingwetgeving. Na een intermezzo als bankier, was hij geruime tijd hoogleraar belastingrecht aan de Leidse universiteit. Zijn academische verplichtingen combineerde hij met werkzaamheden als onafhankelijk adviseur bij een groot kantoor. Als fiscale wetenschapper ging Grapperhaus vanaf enig moment steeds nadrukkelijker het verschijnsel belastingen in historisch perspectief benaderen, zonder zijn belangstelling voor beleidsmatige fiscale vraagstukken te verliezen. Duurzaamheid is uitgegroeid tot een van de belangrijkste pijlers van het beleid van de Europese Unie (EU) op het gebied van economie en samenleving. Toch kan het streven naar duurzaamheid tot in de haarvaten van de Europese economie en samenleving soms leiden tot spanningen met het bestaande EU-recht. Duurzaamheid was vaak nog geen doelstelling toen bepaalde Uniewetgeving werd afgekondigd of toen het Hof van Justitie van de EU richtinggevende uitspraken deed. De auteurs in deze bundel bespreken zodoende deze spanningen binnen het staatssteun-, mededingings-, kartel-, aanbestedings-, biodiversiteit- en consumentenrecht, om zo de vinger te leggen op de 'zere' plekken waar duurzaamheid mogelijk schuurt met het geldende Unierecht. Aktuelle Entwicklungen zeigen eine weitere Zunahme der weltweiten Anstrengungen zum Schutz und zur Verbesserung von Umwelt und Klima. Mit dieser Entwicklung gehen nicht nur wachsende Kosten für Umweltschutz einher, sondern auch ein Bedeutungsgewinn der internationalen Innovationsanstrengungen für Umweltschutzlösungen. Diese Studie untersucht anhand verschiedener Indikatoren - zu Forschung und Entwicklung von Staat und Wirtschaft sowie zu Patentanmeldungen - die deutschen und internationalen Strukturen und Entwicklungen in der Umweltforschung. In Deutschland sowie weltweit sind die öffentlichen FuE-Budgets in diesem Bereich in der langfristigen Sicht deutlich gestiegen. Dabei sind klare strukturelle Verschiebungen zulasten von physischer Umweltforschung (Abfall, Wasser, Boden, Lärm) und zugunsten von Energie- und Klimaschutzforschung zu beobachten. Maßgeblicher Treiber dabei waren zunächst die erneuerbaren Energien, in der jüngeren Vergangenheit sind jedoch innovative Energieeffizienzlösungen und Speichertechnologien weltweit in den Fokus gerückt. Bei der Ausrichtung seiner Wissensbasis auf die Ziele des Umweltschutzes und der Nachhaltigkeit gemessen an Patentanmeldungen gehört Deutschland international zu den führenden Ländern. Die Gruppe der führenden Länder verbreitert sich allerdings. Auch China weist inzwischen bei Umwelttechnologien einen sehr hohen Patentanteil auf, der den Anteil Deutschlands noch übersteigt. Klimaschutztechnologien (einschließlich Energieeffizienz) sind ein wesentlicher Pfeiler der Stärke Deutschlands auf dem Gebiet der Umwelttechnologien.
