Japan's surrender to the Allies on 15th August 1945 ended 15 years of military adventure into China, South-East Asia and the Pacific islands. How and why Japan waged war from 1931 to 1945 and what life was like for the Japanese people are the subjects of this book. Sabur{u014D} lenaga tells English readers for the first time the Japanese story of the Second World War. This book is far more than the history of the great battles that raged from China to the remote regions of the Pacific. It is also an account of what it was like to live under an all-pervasive state system. Using popular songs, private diaries and personal letters, and drawing on his own experience, the author describes the misery of the war for the Japanese and for the peoples they conquered. He shows how a nation was educated in fanatical patriotism and the barbarism and brutality that were its consequence. Sabur{u014D} lenaga has written eloquently of the wretchedness of war, and a compassionate, but highly critical, view of a people consumed by total conflict.
Italy 1636 uses the French and Savoyard invasion of Spanish Lombardy in 1636 to explore the operation of early modern armies through a neo-Darwinian lens, uncovering the universal features of human behaviour and psychology as they relate to violence and war

Zigzagging through personal memory and historical episodes of great consequence – the fall of the Berlin wall, the Romanian revolution and the April 2018 protests in Nicaragua – the essay seeks points of connection between the personal and the political, exploring how the two are intimately and inextricably intertwined. The textual approach can be situated in-between historical analysis and auto-biographical fiction; the aim is to enable multi-layered narratives, and contrasting, conflicting temporalities to co-exist. Illustrative of this intent, Romanian artist Călin Man intervenes upon the more well-known documentary photographs referenced in the text, by conflating them with everyday snapshots from the city of Arad taken at different points along the temporal arc described.
The Prado, we are told, means simply 'meadow', designating a stretch of land that regularly played host to Madrid's many popular festivals (such as the festival of San Isidro) and not the museum that would eventually be named after this location. This is an ambitious book. As the subtitle suggests, it attempts to tell the story of Spanish culture and leisure across two centuries. The scope is broad, the story complex, unfolding a veritable pageant that includes a cast of thousands, cultural, urban, political history; history of class and taste as well as museum history, all rolled into one. Such ambition is to be commended. It lifts the writing of cultural history to new heights, offering a contextual reading of the Paseo del Prado and the museum that came to bear its name. The simultaneous focus on leisure, culture and politics allows Eugenia Afinoguénova to map the different roles the museum was assigned to play in Spain's shifting political landscape. "The combined effect of the welfare state and medical advances means that more people now live longer lives than ever before in history. As a consequence, the experience of ageing has been transformed. Yet our cultural and social perceptions of ageing remain governed by increasingly dated images and narratives. Growing Old with the Welfare State challenges these stereotypes by bringing together eight previously unpublished stories of ordinary British people born between 1925 and 1945 to show contemporary ageing in a new light. These biographical narratives, six of which were written as part of the Mass Observation Project, reflect on and compare the experience of living in two post-war periods of social change, after the first and second world wars. In doing so, these stories, along with their accompanying contextual chapters, provide a valuable and accessible resource for social historians, and expose both historical and contemporary views of age and ageing that challenge modern assumptions."--Bloomsbury Publishing

This article presents a comparative study of the curricula of Chile, Argentina and Colombia, regarding the treatment given to historical memory. The methodology used is qualitative. The use of analytical tools has allowed for the codiication of content; the om issions as well as the objectives proposed in the curricula regarding contemporary history. Among the main results, it can be highlighted that the programs of the three countries coincide in including the recent past as well as topics related to human rights, the dictatorships and political violence. However, their incorporation is carried out from the oficial perspective of the government, without problematizing the processes, while promoting aspects related to «national reconciliation». This situation impedes the creation of a space for the criticism of, and relection on, the events that have taken place and the possibilities of citizens to participate in the protection of human rights. ; El presente artículo trata sobre un estudio comparado delos currículos de Chile, Argentina y Colombia en torno al tratamiento que se les da a la memoria histórica. "Romantic Futures is a collection which explores the significance of futurity in British Romanticism from a comparative perspective in three defining manifestations: the future as conscious legacy, by which is meant both influences or continuities and the (anticipations of) impact on the future; the future as revealed by prophecy, whether via religious figures or superstitions; and, a meditation on the temporality of the future, or the future as a concept. The book brings together a wide range of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives: from utopian studies, history, religion and cultural theory to future studies, neuroscience, video games and art history. Aiming to increase and diversify current critical engagement and highlight the contemporary relevance of the Romantics' multivalent preoccupation with the future, this collection renews the dialogue between Romanticism and our critical relation to its contemporaneity, especially as it speaks to current understandings of the future in the sciences, arts and humanities"--
The purpose of the research is to trace on the material of several successful examples how the processes of unilateral influence of contemporary Western dance on Ukrainian are gradually transformed into bilateral cooperation. Methodology: historical-chronological method, comparative analysis, critical analysis. Scientific novelty: the art history research on tracing the participation/initiation of Ukrainian dancers in international projects is carrying out for the first time. Conclusions. The period of borrowing as an inevitable stage of the process in relations Western/Ukrainian contemporary dance ended. The transition from this stage to the next consisted in a great work on the study of movement and dance techniques, composition methods and other methodological aspects of choreography developed during the history of contemporary dance. To date, the unconscious borrowing can only indicate the creative inconsistency of one or another choreographer. By the current moment, the leaders of the Ukrainian contemporary dance, among which are Larisa Venediktova, Ruslan Baranov, Olga Kebas, Danil Bielkin, Anton Ovchinnikov, Krystyna Shyshkariova and others have gained sufficient prestige on the international art market. During the observed period, not only the relations with dance communities of Russia and Belarus were prolonged, but the new strong relations with dancers from Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Spain, Estonia, Norway, France, Great Britain, and the USA were established. It should be noted that partnerships with Western dance evolved in conditions of unequal financial participation in joint projects. In the absence of investments from Ukrainian side, Ukrainian dancers have acquired the skills to attract foreign investments to the works implemented both in Ukraine and abroad. As a result, with the first positive changes in the area of cultural policy (as shown by the first experience of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation in 2018), the community of Ukrainian contemporary dance proved to be prepared for the ...
