Challenges Benjamin Disraeli & other postcolonial & poststructural writers to argue that race is more of a cultural & historical factor than a biological fact. The binaries of "West & the Rest" are misleading in understanding the concept of race. Conflicts & contradictions in Edward Said's Orientalism reflect larger problems in the poststructuralist theories of difference such as their major weaknesses in their historic & epistemic boundaries. It is argued that racist thinking & the theorists of difference are equally indifferent to mankind's common humanity. Discourses of anticolonial writers are traced to show that the rejection of humanism & the Enlightenment slipped into a regressive discourse of race; anti-humanism is a central part of elite theories & of racism. Opposing racism requires the recentering of universalism. Transcending the concept of race will require a social & an intellectual revolution. L. A. Hoffman
