La Crisis del Espacio Publico

This article looks at some of the problems associated with the possibility of having a space available for political communication & deliberation in contemporary democracies. In order to do so, two contrasting models are analyzed, that of J. Habermas & that of N. Luhmann. This contrast allows us to observe the wide differences that exist between theories of normative action & systemic theories. On this basis, the analysis centres on the distortions in the public space of deliberation caused mainly by the increasing role of the media in their role as intermediaries throughout the political process.
