p. 8 ; column 2 ; 2 ½ col. in. ; The Mormons in Kirtland asked the secretary of state to distinguish between themselves and the polygamist Mormons of Utah in pamphlets sent abroad to warn emigrants that they will be subject to the law if they practice polygamy. The secretary has refused, arguing that the government cannot show preference for one religion over another.
