Popular education under the Restoration and the July Monarchy ; L'éducation populaire sous la Restauration et la monarchie de Juillet

Abstract

International audience ; Inherited from the French Revolution, popular education in the first half of the nineteenth century, is implemented by philanthropic liberal elites. Popular education is the education of children of the people and practical, technical and general education courses for adults, especially industrial workers. The analysis of projects and achievements of the Society for Instruction Elementary under the Restoration, and those of the Polytechnic Association and the Free Association for the Instruction/Education of the People under the July Monarchy, reveals the politics issues of education and professional training for the people and the difficulty in determining a pedagogy aimed at workers. ; Héritée de la Révolution française, l'éducation populaire, dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle, est la mise en œuvre par les élites philanthropiques libérales de la scolarisation des enfants du peuple et de cours d'enseignements pratiques, techniques et généraux destinés aux adultes, en particulier aux ouvriers de l'industrie. L'étude des projets et réalisations de la Société pour l'instruction élémentaire sous la Restauration et de ceux de l'Association polytechnique et de l'Association libre pour l'instruction/éducation gratuite du peuple sous la monarchie de Juillet, révèle les enjeux politiques de l'éducation et de la formation professionnelle du peuple et la difficulté à déterminer une pédagogie à destination des ouvriers.
