Occupation of the European territory by dairy farms and intensification of their technical systems ; L'occupation du territoire européen par les exploitations laitières et l'intensification de leurs systèmes techniques

Abstract

This paper shows how the dairy farms contribute to the occupation of the farm areas in 27 regions of production of the European Union. On the basis of a treatment of individual data from 'RICA' (Réseau d'Information Comptable Agricole = network of information sources on agricultural accountancy), the main structural and economic features of the European dairy farms are presented ; the farms are distributed among five forage systems (according to the share of forage maize in the main fodder area) and among five stocking-rate classes (per hectare of forage area). At the level of the community, the two distributions are then crossed. It is found that the 632 000 dairy farms utilize 27% of the useable farm area, 42% of the area under forage crops and grass, and 77% of the forage maize area. Although nearly half the dairy farms are without forage maize, this crop accounts for over 30% of the forage area in one of five of the farms. Similarly, nearly 16% of the dairy farms have stocking-rates above 3, but 30% of them have stocking-rates below 1.5. ; L'article met en évidence la contribution des exploitations laitières à l'occupation des surfaces agricoles des 27 bassins de production de l'Union européenne. Il présente, ensuite, les principales caractéristiques, structurelles et économiques, des exploitations laitières européennes réparties selon cinq systèmes fourragers (part des superficies de maïs fourrage dans la surface fourragère principale) et cinq classes de chargement (nombre d'UGB herbivores par hectare de surface fourragère). Pour chaque bassin de production, une analyse de dispersion est conduite pour ces deux indicateurs. Enfin, un croisement est opéré à l'échelle communautaire entre les systèmes fourragers et les classes de chargement.
