International audience ; The maritime district of Ostia was interested during Hadrian's period by an overall urban reorganization, evident in sumptuous thermal complexes.After the period of "Military Anarchy" we can see, on the one hand, the resumption of a construction activity at the Baths of Porta Marina (whose inscriptions provide documentation of restorations until the beginning of 6th c.); on the other, the edification of little balnea along the coastal road.The concentration of balnea along the coastal route show how the traffic was quite intense during the 4th c., enough to attract private investments in the building of baths.Several late ancient sources insist on the role of Campania as a frumentifera region linked to the supply of the Urbs. Unique among the suburban provinces, Campania was able to supply, with the exception of oil, all the foodstuffs of public distributions in Rome: wheat, wine, pork.In addition, from literary sources, we know that the city of Terracina provided the timber for the baths. Another kind of material imported to Rome was the lime to repair buildings.The existence of an Aurelian's forum at Ostia (later transformed into praetorium publicum) near the see it seem perfectly coherent with the picture outlined above.The topographical contiguity with the Baths of Porta Marina, restored under the imperial initiative up to the time of Theodoric, could be justified thanks to the presence of the praetorium publicum. It could indeed be hypothesized that these baths in the Late Antiquity, following the intervention of Aurelian and especially during the 4th Century, went gravitating into the orbit of praetorium.
