Pornography as total social fact ; La pornographie comme fait social total

Abstract

International audience ; Pornographic contents are images to which humans maintain a peculiar relationship, inducing, even among researchers, effects of fascination, avoidance, projection and judgement. A field of research is emerging, having difficulties to take its distances from controversies, due to the fragmentation of approaches according to moral, political, social or health considerations. Yet, the diversity of scopes under which this social fact can be approached underlines its interest as an analyzer of the societies in which it occurs. This article explores the relevance of applying to pornography Marcel Mauss' notion of "total social fact". It suggests that the relationship to images that humans develop today, tells us something about the way our society as a whole is changing. ; Les contenus pornographiques sont des images avec lesquelles les humains entretiennent un rapport particulier, induisant chez les chercheurs eux-mêmes des effets de fascination, d'évitement, de projection et de jugement. Le champ d'études qu'elles dessinent peine à s'extraire des controverses pour devenir véritablement scientifique, en raison du morcellement des approches en fonction de préoccupations morales, politiques, sociales ou sanitaires. Or, la diversité des angles sous lesquels ce fait social peut-être abordé souligne précisément son intérêt comme analyseur des sociétés où il se manifeste. L'article examine la pertinence qu'il y aurait à appliquer à la pornographie la notion maussienne de "fait social total". On peut alors envisager que le rapport aux images pornographiques tel qu'il se déploie de nos jours dise quelque chose de nos sociétés en général.
