Abstract

The article examines the effect of systems of cultural reproduction in the 1990s, changes of preferences within different social and demographic groups of the Russians relating to cinema, literature, and music. Basing on the VCIOM survey findings during 1992-98 and data of the government statistics for 1999-96, the author demonstrates how tastes of the public accumulate features of mass culture and routine, including the more urbanised and better educated population. The reproduction of symbolic resources of specialised institutions and groups is significantly reducing, coupled with a decline of the productivity of culture-creating groups themselves. ; The article examines the effect of systems of cultural reproduction in the 1990s, changes of preferences within different social and demographic groups of the Russians relating to cinema, literature, and music.
