"FROZEN" CONFLICTS IN RUSSIAN GEOPOLITICS: HISTORY AND REALITY FOR UKRAINE (1991–2020) ; «ЗАМОРОЖЕНІ» КОНФЛІКТИ В ГЕОПОЛІТИЦІ РФ: ІСТОРІЯ ТА РЕАЛЬНІСТЬ ДЛЯ УКРАЇНИ (1991–2020 рр.)

Abstract

Based on the study of a wide range of resources the article considers the historical roots and political consequences of the core military involvements within the territories of the former USSR countries as well as the participation of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in such conflicts as a medium for safeguarding the geopolitical interests of Russia. The predictive theories of western scientists considering imperialist ambitions of the Russian Federation in the post- Soviet territory have also been analyzed. The Russian Federation, being one of the world's leading countries, strives to maintain its economic, geopolitical, and military impact on the former republics of the USSR, that are independent states at the present time. The attempt to expand the borders by annexing the territories of neighboring states is deemed to be a new threatening vector of Russian foreign policy. In the vast majority of the mentioned conflicts, the Russian Armed Forces have been the main instrument supporting separatism and military escalation. The current situation in our state, existing crisis, emerging risks, and complex process of finding a bailout plan have prompted the authors to refer to the analysis of historical experience. The present historical and analytical study covers some aspects of the military history and geopolitics of the Russian Federation in Transdniestria and the Caucasus regions at the end of the 20th century and as of the beginning of the 21st century. The purpose of such a study is to draw certain historical parallels between events of the contemporary history of recent decades and the present situation in Eastern Ukraine and determine possible future course of events and solutions of current situation. The focus is on the historical and geopolitical background of Russian hybrid aggression upon Ukraine and the possible military and political impact of the conflict. Key words: armed conflict, post-Soviet territory, territorial integrity, sovereignty, inter-ethnic and religious conflict, military aggression, ethnic self-identification, right of nations to self-determination, geopolitical interests. ; У статті на підставі дослідження широкого кола джерел розглянуто історичні причини та політичні наслідки основних військових конфліктів на територіях пострадянських держав, розкрита участь у них Збройних Сил Російської Федерації як інструменту забезпечення геополітичних інтересів Росії. Проаналізовано прогностичні теорії західних науковців щодо імперіалістичних амбіцій РФ на пострадянському просторі. Основна увага приділена дослідженню історичних та геополітичних передумов гібридної агресії Росії проти України та можливих воєнно-політичних наслідків конфлікту.
