Locust plagues during the second half of the 18th century in the south of Alicante ; Plagas de langosta en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII en el sur alicantino

Abstract

The present paper deals with the incidents provoked by the locust plagues during 1756-1758 and 1782-1783 in the southern Valencian land. Social, economic and political repercussions related to these plagues will be analysed, with the aim of going in depth into how this biological risk was faced, what kind of damages the agricultural production suffered and how were the legislated directories implemented in order to face this insect. The used documentation comes from the different local files found in Novelda, Elche and Orihuela. ; El presente trabajo aborda las incidencias provocadas por las plagas de langosta de 1756-1758 y 1782-1783 en las tierras meridionales valencianas. Se analizan las repercusiones que a nivel social, económico y político tuvieron las mencionadas plagas con el fin de adentrarnos en cómo se afrontó este riesgo biológico, qué daños produjo en la producción agrícola y de qué manera se aplicaron las directrices legisladas para hacer frente a este insecto. La documentación utilizada proviene de diferentes fondos de los archivos locales de Novelda, Elche y Orihuela.
