Indeed, snow, frost and little daylight seem to be a heavy obstacle for a beautiful and easy life. Not for nothing do three-fourth of the humankind live in the tropics. However, a deeper insight into the phenomenon of winter and winter cities makes us believe that winter can bring a lot of opportunities and advantages. This issue is particularly important for Russia, even strategically important. Not only because General Frost often helped the country in times of military danger. Irkutsk citizens decided to find out what benefits they can get from WINTER. The Irkutsk National Research Technical University hosted a conference devoted to "Attractiveness and Economy of a Winter City". The rector of the Technical University, Mikhail Kornyakov and the moderator of the conference, Sergey Mayarenkov invited the participants to search for the ways of life "in harmony with winter". Снег, мороз и короткий световой день действительно выглядят как тяжелая помеха для красивой и легкой жизни. Не зря же три четверти человечества проживает в тропиках.Однако более глубокий взгляд на феномен зимы и зимнего города убеждает: зима может принести немало возможностей и преимуществ. Для России эта тема особенно важна, без преувеличения, стратегически. И не только потому, что Генерал Мороз не раз выручал страну в годы военной угрозы.Иркутяне озадачились вопросом, какие выгоды можно извлечь из ЗИМЫ. На площадке ИРНИТУ в феврале состоялась конференция «Привлекательность и экономика зимнего города». Ректор Технического университета Михаил Корняков и модератор конференции Сергей Маяренков предложили участникам включиться в поиски способов жизни «в гармонии с зимой». Мы открываем эту тему на страницах журнала и начинаем аккумулировать конкретные примеры того, как наличие «зимних факторов» привносит специфику в образ жизни людей, в развитие городов, в архитектуру и общественные пространства, и собирать идеи и технологии по обустройству городов в суровых климатических условиях.
