SOLIDARY TOURISM AND EMPOWERING: THE CASE OF EK BALAM, YUCATÁN, MÉXICO ; TURISMO SOLIDARIO Y EMPODERAMIENTO: EL CASO DE EK BALAM, YUCATÁN, MÉXICO

Abstract

Recently, public policies lead to focus on tourism as one of the ways to attain development in rural communities. Various social organizations have identified this policy and consider it a way of diversifying their economic activities with a special focus on the use of natural resources with tourism aims. With regard to the different types of tourism, from the conventional or massive concept in contrast with alternative tourism as well as other forms of tourism, such as sustainable, responsible and solidary tourism, in this contribution we show how in the Yucatan Peninsula the product of solidary tourism promoted by the TDS Civil Association, based on collective initiatives, has allowed social, political and cultural empowering of the Maya indigenous community of Ek-Balam, through a rural tourism project. ; Últimamente las políticas públicas conducen a enfocarse en el turismo como una de las formas para lograr el desarrollo en comunidades rurales. Diversas organizaciones sociales han identificado dicha política y ven en ello una manera de diversificar sus actividades económicas, con especial enfoque en el aprovechamiento de los recursos naturales con fines turísticos. En relación con los diferentes tipos de turismo, desde el concepto convencional o masivo en contraposición al turismo alternativo, así como otras formas de turismo, como el sustentable, responsable y solidario, en esta contribución se muestra cómo en la península de Yucatán el producto de turismo solidario promocionado por la Asociación Civil TDS, basado en iniciativas colectivas, ha permitido el empoderamiento social, político y cultural de la comunidad indígena Maya de Ek-Balam, a través de un proyecto de turismo rural.
