Abstract

The article analyzes the methodological principles, genre character, issues and polemic character of research on Franko by a diaspora critic Luka Lutsiv. In particular, it highlights the ethical and ideological aspects of his polemics with Soviet interpretations of the works of Ivan Franko. It is emphasized that Lutsiv's legacy combines both scholarly and publicistic elements and makes it possible to penetrate into the conceptual aspects of Franko's works, which posed a threat to the totalitarian system but were effi cient for the development of democratic freedoms and national culture in the modern world. It has been remarked that Lutsiv's research on Franko is an essential cultural and historical document which allows ascertaining what is fl exible and what remains unchanged in interpretations and assessments of Franko in different socio-political and ideological circumstances.
