Abstract
James Wilkinson was controversial U.S. Military commander and appointed governor of the Louisiana Territory. Even during his time serving under President Jefferson there were allegations brought against that he had stole gold. He was later found to be incompetent in his role as commander, which promoted a two year investigation. Yet, he maintained his post under Madison,leading to the events to be seen as a controversy. This article examines Wilkinson's relationship with Spain, from who he was said to have gotten gold from.
