Élite, traducción y público masivo ; Elite, Translation and Popular Audiences

Abstract

Varios años antes del auge de la industria editorial en Argentina (1936-1960), entre noviembre de 1901 y enero de 1920, el diario La Nación de Buenos Aires publicó una colección de libros, «La Biblioteca de La Nación»; la mayor parte de ellos eran traducciones de textos procedentes de diversas tradiciones literarias. La colección tuvo un éxito inmediato y llegó a un vasto público, debido al bajo precio de los libros, la atrayente calidad de la impresión y la variada selección de títulos, ochocientos setenta y dos en total: «clásicos», novelas de aventuras, relatos policiales y numerosos folletines franceses del siglo XIX. Algunos de esos textos estaban traducidos del francés y no de su lengua fuente. El diario La Nación era entonces un órgano de la élite política y económica en Argentina. En el presente trabajo se hace un relevamiento de las concepciones sobre la función de la literatura traducida que comportaba esta colección, claramente dirigida a un público masivo que incluía inmigrantes europeos recientemente incorporados a las prácticas culturales en lengua española. ; Well before the publishing boom in Argentina (1936-1960), between November 1901 and January 1920, the newspaper La Nación of Buenos Aires published a collection of books, «La Biblioteca de La Nación», the great majority of which were translations of texts belonging to different literary traditions. The collection was an immediate success, and reached a vast audience, due to the low prices of the books, the high quality of the printing, and the varied choice of titles −872 in total−, including «classics», adventure novels, detective stories, and several French feuilletons. Some of them were translated from French, and not from the source language. The newspaper La Nación was at that time an organ of the economic and political elite in Argentina. This research is aimed at tracing the conceptions about the role of translated literature that stand behind this collection, which was clearly intended to popular audiences, among whom were many European immigrants recently incorporated to Spanish-speaking cultural practices. ; Peer reviewed
