Abstract

Equality is one of the fundamental values of democratic society and an inalienable right for the individuals who belong to it. At the same time, onecan not fail to recognize, in equality, the right to diversity which unconditionallysanctions the right of everyone to the conscious maturation of theirpersonal and social identity. The thin veil that separates the concept of normalityfrom the concept of diversity often gives rise to easy generalizationsand to positions on the meaning of the term diversity. In fact, the social assessment of normality stems, in a preponderant way, from socially perceivedexpectations and judgments of value where, rarely, the problem ofsuperdotation is inserted as a particular form of diversity. The importanceof environmental and social influence in the development of superdotationand cognitive enhancement was the driving motive of the action of FedericaMormando and of Don Calogero La Placa who, although from different perspectives,fought for recognition of the super-gifted children and their rightto be appropriately inserted into the education paths. ; L'uguaglianza rappresenta uno dei valori fondamentali della società democraticae un diritto inalienabile per gli individui che ne fanno parte. Allostesso tempo, non si può non riconoscere, nell'uguaglianza, il diritto alla diversità che sancisce, incondizionatamente, il diritto di ognuno alla maturazioneconsapevole della propria identità personale e sociale. Il sottile veloche separa il concetto di normalità dal concetto di diversità dà, spesso, aditoa facili generalizzazioni e ad aprioristiche prese di posizione sul significato/senso del termine diversità. La valutazione sociale della normalità scaturisce,infatti, in maniera preponderante, da aspettative e giudizi di valoresocialmente percepiti dove, raramente, si inserisce il problema della superdotazione come particolare forma di diversità.
