Urbanistics and the Architecture of Fear. Some Thoughts upon Enclosed Break Away Residential Estates in Mexico. ; Urbanismo y arquitectura del miedo. Reflexiones sobre los fraccionamientos residenciales cerrados en México

Abstract

The paper holds that spatial social segregation in the cities of Mexico goes back at least as far as the citiesfounded in Nueva España. From such times onwards both Society and the space it inhabits have undergoneimportant structural changes, the charting through time of these giving us a picture of the transformationsurban morphology has gone through to date. The on-going urge to split up the city from within by means ofinternal boundary lines is here seen to explain the appearance of walled residential estates set downregardless in outlying zones assailed by burgeoning poverty. These utopia tailored to the dreams of the eliteand thus of the middling sort bring with them giant undertakings and commercial zones which likewise battenup that which is public while re-carving up the body politic of the host city. In the light of these considerationsthe author finds himself faced by a series of questions the answering of which and possible lines of investigationspring from which would, perhaps, lead on to the formulating of new, open city models that would be allincluding,friendly rational environments. ; La segregación socioespacial tiene en las ciudades mexicanas una larga historia que por lo menosse remonta a los núcleos fundacionales de la Nueva España. A partir de ahí se han registrado importantescambios estructurales en la sociedad y en el espacio habitado, cuyo seguimiento histórico revela lastransformaciones en la morfología urbana. El continuismo en la experiencia del urbanismo separatista ingeniadomediante la elaboración de fronteras interiores enmarca la reciente proliferación de unidades residencialesbardeadas, pertrechadas ostentosamente en amplias periferias de pobreza creciente. La utopía comunitariaa la medida de las élites, y por extensión de las clases medias, está acompañada de intervencionestales como megaproyectos y centros comerciales, observando la misma tendencia de privatización del espaciopúblico al tiempo que redefinen la articulación del tejido urbano. Estas reflexiones sugieren interrogantesy líneas de trabajo con la intención de indagar formas urbanísticas abiertas, amables, incluyentes, ambientalmenteracionales.
